That would be the moment I'd become a semi-strictly GoG costumer.

True but from a license to use the game to paying monthly fees to access your games is a looong way.
Not to mention it's an unrealistic business model. Well, at least for now. It all depends on how far are companies going to push cloud computing. Just look at OnLive. Would you ditch retail & Steam for something like that?

Thats like needing a subscription to walmart/gamestop/amazon to buy things. There is no ground for steam to charge a sub fee, nor is there a need. Steam is immensely profitable and thus far as shown to be a socially responsible company, IE a company that actually cares for its customers instead of the bottom line.

If Steam had subscription fees the whole System would be different. Then they would probably make a flatrate system like OnLive.
But when Steam will be the same I would never pay something to use a store and DRM, there are many alternatives.

Lol steam fanboys are ready to pay for drm bundled with a friends list and some crappy community features.

only Xbox live gold member wants to pay to play online. No true PC gamer would ever want to play something that has always been free. Your question is out of any possibilities. Maybe one day, they will a something like a gold/plus/whatever with more bonus (though i don't see any) but they won't ever make steam with fee for using. How would you justify to make people like me, using steam for 9 years, having lot of game, suddenly pay to access my account ? Well, i spare you a headache, they won't even try.

There are months when I don't have any free time to play, so I probably wouldn't pay for a subscription, wouldn't be worth it. ):

no subscription fees would drive the loyal steam fanbase to otherways to play their games such as cracking them if need be just to play something that they own. if steam had a few adverts on the store i wouldn't mind since that would not be out of my own pocket.

Um, wow - really? As many have pointed out - paying for DRM is just (not seems) crazy, especially when you consider all the games you didn't buy via Steam directly, but have added through their portal - why would I pay to play those? They are basically an overlay that adds in-game features (friend's list, achievements, etc.) and as of now there are other similar services (Raptr for one) that do similar things for free.

Well, we wouldn't have much choice. It's scary thinking about it. We got all these games that work only on their service, so if they were to change their terms or whatever...
Of course, I don't expect this to happen as long as Gaben is on the throne.

Yeh, a totally optional + adds features rather than taking them away type of service I would consider for sure.
I would also consider this for SG :)

How would it even work? A fee to access the games, even single player? Even Xbox isn't that bad, only need gold to play online.
Or would the fee be for online features/steam cloud/multiplayer? Well, the MP on most games is handled by the game itself, not Steam so that wouldn't make sense. The could charge for the 'community' and Steam cloud, but that would be really weaksauce and I think most wouldn't bother.
The problem with any company doing this on PC is that people could just change to another service. It's not like console where you have no choice.

Did you click this link thinking steam was going to add subscription fees?
Quick question, would you use steam if it had Subscription fees? If so, how much would you pay?
I don't think I would have ever started using steam if it had subscription fees, when it started, steam was very unstable. Maybe now I would pay around $5 a month to use the service.
Edit:
It looks like the general conciseness is "No", which is that I was expecting. What if steam offered something else with the subscription, like discounts, special community sections, steaming, better cloud. What would it take for you to pay a fee?
I feel like xbox is charging for a service that should be free to begin with.
