brands
Nexus is actually Google's brand. But they do outsource it to other manufacturers.

A lot of people have no idea who made the phone they're using. To them it's just a Google Nexus phone.
As far as prices go, before the Nexus 6 those were some of the cheapest quality phones money could buy. The N6 is priced the same as it's competitor's though.

Maybe I've just been unlucky, but most cheaper Chinese devices I've seen had terrible screens, under-powered processors and GPU, iffy touch sensors, terrible cameras, small storage space, and no support/updates at all.

Upper class Chinese phones are on par with the cheapest trash Samsung has to offer. The latter not giving you any updates after a few months, which would even allow to get cheap Chinese phones every six months, paying the same price you would've for a mid range Samsung phone while getting hard & software upgrades. The market is at a turning point, reselling Chinese hardware but charging double isn't gonna do it anymore and support from Korean brands is just as awful as Chinese.

I don't do low-end or mid-class phones, that's probably why the Chinese devices never had any appeal to me. I stick to the flagship lines, which tend to have better support both from the manufacturers and the community. To me it's worth the price tag for the enjoyment I will get out of using it. I would probably end up smashing a low-end phone into the nearest wall out of frustration. :P

Uhm, fyi Chinese brands cover all device classes, I just chose the most common one because that's dominated by Samsung, with cheap ass phones sold at insane prices while having the worst OS you could find. Compare the Xiaomi Mi4 and the Samsung Galaxy S6, the latter is 700€ for the cheapest version, the former around 350€. Ultimately, Samsung's support is just as bad as any Chinese manufacturer's and at that price, you could just get two in case one breaks, so I don't see any reason not to do it.

Except that phone is not even close to the level of the Galaxy S6. It's specs, and price, are similar to my 2-years old Galaxy S4 who's starting to show it's age. And it is still being updated by Samsung.

While the SoC and RAM are similar to the Note 3, the screen and camera are not as good as those on the S4 and there is no storage expansion, and no NFC. So, on average, it is still close to the S4 in term of overall performance, features and quality.
As for the S6, it's got a 8-core 64-bit CPU compared to a 4-core 32-bit one, almost double the number of pixels, bigger and higher quality screen and cameras. It's also sporting UFS 2.0 allowing for read/write speeds up to 3 times faster, faster DDR4 RAM. NFC, wireless charging, etc. While I agree it's not twice as fast overall, it's in a totally different league than the Mi4 in terms of both performance, features and quality.
I'm not saying the Mi4 is a bad phone, but it should be compared with something that's on the same level, otherwise the comparison is meaningless.

Can't replace the battery and no sd card option. What a great phone.

That's how Samsung convinced me to keep my S4 for now instead of upgrading to the S6. And it's a shame since it's a real beast on every count, except for usability.

Or if you're one of Google's tens of thousands of employees the price is right for Nexus phones as a Christmas gift.

Why would it take a mortgage to afford a Nexus? The current gen Nexus devices are in the same price range as their flagship competitors.

But people still have Nokia phones. Especially older ones made from recycled tank parts.

I had never head of it before, and now I can't even use it. Not that it matters, it looks almost identical to iOS7 and doesn't seem to add much new, so I'd pass anyway. I figure it could be nice if you enjoy the feel of iOS7 and still have one of the first iPhones or iTouches.

Had an older HTC Windows touchscreen smartphone before the first iPhone came out. Moved on to Android-based Samsung phones afterwards. Looking at how their S6 turned out, will probably move on to HTC, Motorola or LG for my next one unless they get their shit together.

Nexus for life! <3 I'm currently using Nexus 5 (6 is still a bit too expensive for me) and it's the best phone I've ever seen <3
Previously I was using HTC for quite a long while, but got extremely dissapointed with poor quality of Desire X (extremely overheating, microphone dying after 9 months, screen dying 2 times before warranty ended and now it's dying as well) so I said to myself that no more HTC for me.
