As it seems, you get an automatic market restriction unless you give them money at least once a year. It doesn't matter how much you invested in your library. Greed at its best.
Blackmailing me to spend money to sell those pointless cards is a new low, even for them.

PS: Thanks for the blacklists. Imagine my audacity to complain about Valve during the summer sale, lol.

Buy a cheep cent item on the market. Processing fees will eat up any revenue.

I'm "Market restricted". Cannot sell, cannot buy.

Looks like they cornered you then.

Funny thing is even if I buy something I have a 7 days timeout before I'll have the Market restriction lifted.

I don't like neither being blackmailed nor being punished for no reason, so I think I'll skip the summer sale entirely, out of principle.

I think this has been in effect for a couple of years already.
They're trying to prevent people from opening hundreds of accounts to make a bundle on cards.

Sorry but that doesn't hold. I've spent more than I'd like to admit on my account to be thrown under the rug and be labeled a potential abuser, unless I give them more money. It can be easily seen I don't have alts and I have a clean record. With so much money invested in my collection to even consider I'd go to such lengths for a few cents from their stupid cards is borderline insane and disgusting as an attitude.
What's even worse is those abusers are treated better than I am, because it doesn't even matter how much you paid them over the years, only that you paid something, even a few cents, in the past year, therefore any abuser just needs to have a valid transaction in the past year to have better privileges than I, as a long time and faithful customer, have access to.
It's rather disappointing to say the least. I can always buy something I want or need but I don't want to be blackmailed to do so. That's a horrible practice from them.

I don't think they are passing a personal judgment on your account. It's just something they implemented to prevent abuse in general.
And there are abusers on Steam. Just any exploit will do. Look at how users in certain regions are getting shafted because kids wanted to buy 2 games instead of one with their allowance money.

I can always buy something I want or need but I don't want to be blackmailed to do so

I know exactly how you feel. I don't generally buy games on Steam because most games are available on other sites with bigger discounts, like Fanatical, Humble etc. And I won't spend more on Steam just to make pennies during sales.

And I won't spend more on Steam just to make pennies during sales.

Obviously, since it doesn't even make any sense. I know it's probably something generic for them but it's personal for me, so I'll divert my money elsewhere from now on.

The thing is that this measure doesn't prevent people from getting cards from multiple accounts that they then send back to their main one to be sold from there, so I don't really know what it would be preventing.
If anything it sounds more like a thing meant to stop people from suddenly charging money into their account and making a lot of purchases in the market after a long period of inactivity.

Hm... I thought you also couldn't trade cards from these account. Not just sell them.
It used to be that way but I'm not sure how it is now.

I have three alt accounts mainly for farming cards (it was a semi-lucrative endeavor once upon a time) so I can tell you with certainty that they don't get trade-locked no matter how many years it has been since the last time I spent any money in them. They are locked from the market tho.

Then I guess you're right, it won't prevent much to lock accounts out of the market.

I wouldn't be surprised if this has to do with US-specific taxes, since apparently over there they do care about what goes on with digital item markets.

Never thought about that. I'm glad France doesn't seem to even know there are digital items markets anywhere or prices would go up 25% on cards xD

Yeah I'm pretty sure that my country's government isn't aware that they're a thing either, it took them years to notice that they could tax digital services like Steam or Netflix :P

It prevents me from giving them more money, out of spite. To each their own, haha.

I bought a pack mentioned by a fellow SG member with some leftover wallet and I have a week of timeout before they lift the restriction, which is absurd to say the least but, wtv.

I know for sure I'll minimize to the full extent the amount of money I'll send their way.

Find a cheap 0.39-0.49 EUR game that drops semi-valuable trading cards. Or buy one of these two:
https://store.steampowered.com/sub/96994/
https://store.steampowered.com/sub/76949/

The first package has 4 games with cards, the second 3. You can earn a good portion of their price back even if you are not in a cheap region.
