So i was browsing around on my local craigslist page looking for some spare parts and cables so that i can build my sister a gaming computer that she wants for Christmas while shes at school when i come across not one but many different sellers using their carpet and other bad surfaces to use as a background to sell their stuff. This annoyed me very much even though i just keep browsing but i see it so often that its questionable that some people even care or know what it does to parts. Some people may not see what i saw but when i started building computers at a very young age i quickly learned that it is definitely not good to lay any part of a pc on the carpet or any surface that could be abrasive to the boards/ circus (hint: i ruined my very first computer that way). I know never to buy anything like that from anyone because to me that is blatant not caring for what the item is.

Ive bought and resold parts on craigslist for a very long time now aside from newegg and other places when i need upgrades but i always keep the packaging and anti static plastic that most things like MOBO's and GPU's come in so that it stays in its current condition till its able to be sold. I just dont understand why people take perfectly fine technology and ruin it by letting it just sit openly on a floor. Does it happen to destroy everything every time? NO, but theres always that chance that it wont work because the person obviously didnt take care of it. I just dont know if anyone else feels the same way i do about this, It may be that im OCD, maybe im weird, who knows.

Anyways as usual I have a small giveaway for those that stuck in till the end of my rant. Happy holidays everyone.

Do you take care of parts that you are not currently in your PC?

Rubs graphics card across carpet

I keep graphic cards, processors and other parts I most probably re-use in the anti-static plastic, but that's all. And I never find time to re-sell old stuff, so that's only for emergencies or friends/family.

thats a very good reason to keep it. i wish my sis would have told me she had wanted a computer about 8 months ago cause of some upgrading i did cause i had enough to build a second gaming rig minus the CPU and OS. now i gotta start fresh and see exactly what she wants to play to get a feel for what she needs in her pc

I wouldn't like to buy components that have been visibly exposed to static electricity sources. At the same time, I don't have a grounded wrist strap for parts-handling to reduce the chance of a static discharge as much as possible, nor do I own an air compressor or disposable "duster" cans to clean things the safe way (have to use my vacuum). I do use ESD bags for storage, handling, and to prevent contact with potentially-charged surfaces.

i hear you on that one. Im all for keeping a PC clean and having any chance of static be little to none but like you said not everyone has one of those things so you improvise and make do with what you got :D

I usually save most boxes stuff come in (including the anti-static bags etc) and I put the components back in them once I don't use them anymore.
I don't personally have a problem buying stuff that somebody takes pictures off while they lay on the floor etc, as long as there's an understanding that I can return those products if there are any immediate problems with them.

Thanks for the gib :P

I normally put the old piece of hardware in the bag and box of the new one that's going to replace it and then put said box somewhere.
Right now I know that I have a source, graphics card, some ram, multiple cables, a box full of modems and "modem related stuff" and a couple hard drives laying around the house; but not a clue of where exactly. I also have have multiple old cellphones all over the place, heck, I just opened one of the drawers in this desk and found one.

If I plan to sell or give away those parts I pack them carefully, usually in antistatic bag of the new part. If those parts are just waiting to go to the scrapyard, then I just keep them somewhere with all the other scrap.
