Hey all!

So, my girlfriend's birthday is coming up in 2 weeks. And I know what I want to get her, I'm just not sure if the idea is good. She's a massive book nerd (she loves books). And She also loves the Game of Thrones TV show. She never read GoT books though. So I wanted to ask, are the books different than the show, and would reading them be boring, or good for someone who loves books so much?

Thank you in advance!

The TV series is not in total order with the books. They do some mix ups and add things that don' exist in the books. The only drawback is that when she will read the books the scenes of the series will come to her mind and won't let her make her own Game of Thrones world in her head. At least that's what happened to me. Im not a book nerd (working on it though) so I can't say for sure which is better. For her as you describe her, well I don't think she ll watch the series again :P

I read books and watch the show, but maybe it's different for me as I read books before TV series, so had all images in my head already before I seen it on TV screen ;)

+1 Yeah, after reading the books I tuned on the show only to watch some important scenes, you know, just checking how they're going to turn it to live-action. There's ups and downs.

I agree with Yunie here, I think the books are far superior. The format's interesting per se, since each chapter has a different main character - which allows the books to explore each character's POV throughly. It's been one of my favourite fantasy series since the first volume came out. :3

Totally agree! I don't hate the TV show but the books are way better (and much more detailed! I miss that in the TV show, everything happens very quick, and obviously there are changes from book to TV show version), so yes, I think she will love the books.

Books are much more detailed. Also TV shows need to take shortcuts, drop many minor plot fragments, characters, don't realy tell you much about world lore and history - so yeah - there's much in the books even if she's seen the show already. Martin may not have the greatest writing style, but his characters and plot creation skills are top notch, so if she's into books and show as well it's a great idea to give her these books ;)

A very good idea if she's loves the TV series. It may be taken as a deeper look behind everything that has happened in the series because the books directly follow the characters point of view. The characters motivations and actions are far more fleshed out in the books.

Furthermore, the series has begun to diverge more and more from the books so she is most certainly in for more than a couple of surprises if she reads the books and still remembers how it played out in the series.

The books are really great, man. I, for one, first knew of GoT from the TV series, then due to super hard-on for the contents I bought all of the books in one go. I had to say that decision transformed me from a non-reader to a massive book nerd. I am now a beautiful butterfly, flapping my majestic wings, roaming above flower gardens, oblivious to the passing of day. Anyway, the books are much much more detailed and it's not boring at all, it got me into reading novels ffs! Sorry for grammar mistakes and please do correct me, if any of you guys/gals spot any.

A lot of people say that. I enjoyed it. Perhaps it's not the greatest book ever made but not the most boring one

4th is not necessarily Feast for Crows, Storm of Swords is divided into two parts, Steel and Snow; Blood and Gold. However yeah, Feast for Crows was the most boring book in the series

exactly, that's why I said three to four, because there's no way of knowing how someone will count those books. I mean, book three part 1 and book three part 2? Come on, Martin!

Yes it is. Just because the UK/Aus versions has Storm of Swords split into two smaller parts doesn't negate the fact the two parts come together to make 1 single book. It's book 2 part 1 and book 2 part 2. GRRM wrote 5 books, when he speaks of book 4 he speaks of Feast for Crows as does everyone else in the world.

You're not getting the context

three to four, no

He meant the parts included as well, speaking in terms of the same. I spoke in his context, meaning that 4h is not necessarily Feast for Crows for everyone. I'd assume you'd have enough common sense to interpret I mentioned that in his terms, as a reply. You saw his reply as well, which further clarifies that he was speaking in terms of all the parts; book 1, book 2, book 3 part 1, book 3 part 2.

A lot of people already answered but I think it's worth to repeat:
Get her the books!
Totally worth it!
I'm pretty sure she will like reading them. And yes, I'm keeping in mind she's already watching the show.
Go for it.

Dont think about the diffrences between books and series. She will like the idea, that you thought about what you can buy for her and you will see her reaction when she read them. She will be suprised! Its way better than most of the presents she will get :D

Everyone has summed it up quite aptly, book going on the detail and show going on to save time. So just one more thing to consider - the books provide you an great view into the feelings, emotions of the character. That explains a lot, much more than the TV does. For eg, The TV show didn't even introduce Theon Greyjoy properly

The books are full of demons (details, more awesome characters that u won't know in the series, more indept story) ... the series is 10 times simplified ...

If she likes books she will love GOT books.

I read the books, those that were published, before the series started.
Like midnighshooter said: "The only drawback is that when she will read the books the scenes of the series will come to her mind and won't let her make her own Game of Thrones world in her head."
I'm currently reading the last published book and all characters in my head look like the ones in the series.
In the books for instance Tyrion is way more disfigured then he is in the series. Also, I didnt like the guy at all in the books but in the series he's my most lovable person. Shit like that happens when you read the books and watch the show.
Also, when she's read all the books there will be no surprises left. I knew the red wedding was coming, the fun thing is I didnt watch the scene but just looked at my wife's face ;)
If she likes this kind of books I'd recommend it though. It gives way more detail and background
