it was bad. I only used 8.1, which apparently made a huge improvement, so I can only wonder how horrible 8.0 was

I mean, let's be honest, for the past 20-30 years, any time microsoft has done anything involving their own design choice, it's been a disaster.

They should just stick to what they do best: copy everyone else's ideas and figure out how to leverage their huge market share to dominate. (of course, they already missed their chance with the phone, and now it looks like they fucked it on tablets too)

Download the latest build and do a fresh install. Upgrading is fine but clean install is better.

As far as I know, you used to have to upgrade your OS in order to change your product key's validation to a Windows 10 license, but now Microsoft has changed that. If you opt in for the free upgrade program, you don't have to upgrade your OS. Clean install will work as well. Search the web for more information, as I am currently on mobile and it's a bit uncomfortable. I am sure this is how things work now.

Will it really make any difference if I had just reformatted my Windows 8 before upgrading to windows 10?

The only thing I downloaded/installed on my reformatted Windows 8(.1) was a network driver to get Windows Update to work

Windows 10's compatibility options are just as robust as Windows 7/8.1. Also most 7/8.1 drivers work fine for Windows 10, on the off chance your hardware does not have updated drivers (from experience).
The only reason you wouldn't upgrade for compatibility, is if you are running XP, in which case you wouldn't need to use compatibility options.

win 8/8.1? upgrade now.
win 7? upgrade towards the end of the free upgrade period.

security / privacy concerns? your windows versions doesn't matter for this, they're all equally "rigged".

You still might want to browse all the settings in win10 and turn off plenty of them. One particular step I recommend is to turn off sharing your WLAN password with everyone and their mother world-wide. To do this you have to change your SSID (in your router settings) to "nameofyourSSIDasyouwish_nomap_optout" (and have ssid broadcast enabled).

"_nomap" makes it so google doesn't publish (wherever they please) the location and existence of your wlan (as they scan for these with the street view cars as well).
"_optout" makes it so microsoft doesn't share your WLAN password with your friends and their friends and their friends...

Interesting. There is actually an expiration on the free upgrade period? From what I read, once you registered for the free upgrade and you create the install media, you pretty much own Win10 as it is attached to the same key as your previous OS.

Getting a solid answer is a little tricky though.

The free offer to upgrade to Win 10 ends this May. If you download Win 10 before May, keep forever and never pay in the future. Just to clarify.

I wonder if this means the GWX.exe will finally be uninstallable after that date. I've removed it from both my Windows 7 systems, but it's like the cat that came back, you just can't permanently kill it. And on one of my systems it crashes unexpectedly.

I suppose it's nice of them to offer Windows 10 for free. But the hard sell has really gotten on my nerves--especially given that one of my systems CANNOT be upgraded.

Yes, you are correct. That's why I've acquiesced and now just put up with the occasional error messages from nowhere signalling its crashes.

But, seriously, this should not be. At least they stopped with the actual nag screen at startup. Microsoft's corporate motto should be "Microsoft, making sure your perpetual use of our product never becomes actual brand loyalty."

bad IME design for win10. but if you are already win8 users, it's the same.
i will suggest win7 users upgrade first then downgrade within the 1st month.
in this way you can upgrade to win10 later even the free upgrade period is over.

I've run into the occasional negative game review from users that say a game worked in win 7 but not in win 10; you might try to find some sort of comprehensive win 7 to win 10 compatibility list before risking an upgrade though.
for me I've never had a pc live more than a few years (and mine is at least 4 years old now) so I will just wait till I have to buy a new rig with the plus that that new rig will be optimized for whatever windows version is latest then.

That sort of thing happens all the time. Like how people retain the notion that Fallout 3 doesn't work on Windows 7 and up, despite that particular problem only affecting a very small percent of the users and can be fixed in one minute in Notepad.
What is an actual problem and a legit concern is games that use very old DirectX versions, before DX5 or DX6 (can't remember which). To my knowledge they still didn't fix the issue where the OS simply won't support them, at all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know with win 7 in the solve pc issues icon on the task bar there is a "Solve a problem with Tages Protection" task which when I followed it through to the windows site it basically said it wouldn't be fixed.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, drm sometimes does really malicious things like bot nets, root kits, etc.
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/08/17/windows-10-safedisc-securom-drm/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Tagés used to be the second worst DRM ever before Steam switched to being a store instead of an internet-demanding protection in the age where less than half of the buyers even had access to the internet. Not that SafeDisc or SecuRom are better. All three should have been killed of ages ago since they not only cause more troubles than they solved for the publishers, but all have been notorious for locking out the legitimate buyers from their games, often requiring them to use a cracked EXE to even play their games.
We can say a lot of things, but at least DRMs like the current Steamworks or UPlay cause way fewer headaches.

Still, I was talking more like actual compatibility/technical issues regarding a game engine and how it interfaces OS drivers and other API layers. This is where most of the "game cannot run on Windows [x]" problems stem from. Still, it happens at every new Windows release and usually affects only a few titles; even fewer that don't get an official or a fan patch to fix the problem. It has been in the early 2000s for XP, around 2007 when Vista hit, in 2012 when Win 8 introduced yet another set of new stuff, and now with Win 10. And every time some people were whistleblowing all over the internet about how bad the new OS is since [program X] is not running, but except for Vista (which was just plain terrible), in the end, the answer still was to just switch to the new version anyway.

Very few people like the tiles in desktops. Even the touchscreen laptops made especially for that GUI weren't that popular. I love that GUI on my phone, but it is just terrible on a large screen with a mouse.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My biggest gripe with tiles is that they're freaking ugly, and Microsoft doesn't allow you to customize them. There are third-party workarounds, though, so it's not that big a problem.
Still, I rarely use them. (great for accessing web services, though)

I'm also thinking about upgrading to win10 from 7 but I heard it hardly makes a difference on oldish laptops with bad graphical memory anyway.

Permalink

It needs a little less resources to run, that's it. But it can be an improvement if the laptop is capable of running it in the first place.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The main reason why I am considering is that it might solve the problems I am currently having in Skyrim where my fps is fine but I get a lot of texture stretching where it is impossible to see anything. I used to be able to play the game on my laptop so there's a chance it could solve the issue by moving to Win 10 but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Me neither. I'm 99.99% sure that your problem stems from the engine and its VRAM management rather than anything on lower API layers.

The only problem I got with Win 10 is the driver signature enforcement, it is such an assh*le move from Microsoft that I almost wanted to erase the whole thing... These geniuses instead of letting the user decide which driver whitelist from the enforment, decided to lock everything down and allow unsigned driver installation only by putting the machine in "test mode" and disabling driver signature entirely. So now I'm forced to run permanently in test mode, it's not the watermark on the desktop that bothers me, it's the fact that some games with a cheap anti-cheat protection won't let you play if you have test mode enabled (RUST is an example).

Also since I'm an hobbyist hw developer this thing touches me personally, since if I want to release a driver I cant' even self sign it anymore, I now have to pay A LOT of $$$ to get a valid certificate from one of Microsoft approved certificate authorities. This is a hard blow to everyone that released/modified/enhanced drivers free of charge, cos now the user has to put the machine in test mode to use it.

Bah, anyway, after the rant here is the train.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Is there no workaround to bypass this (e.g. some registry key users could change)?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope, I even tried to follow their test-signing procedure, but this only allows you to create a self signed driver that will install on Win 10 with test mode enabled and will fail otherwise (since the signature is validated against the root CA's public certificates).

No matter what they say, this move is directed towards forcing little sw/hw developers into paying them for valid certificates. It has nothing to do with "security", otherwise they would have let the user (the actual owner of the damn machine) decide what can and cannot be installed with a simple whitelist. Now instead you have to fully disable driver signing and expose your machine to possible security breaches.

Well played Microsoft, well played indeed.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hasn't this enforcement been in place at least as far as Win7 x64?

Permalink

On Seven you could bypass the validation by using some old broken proprietary driver certificates, now with Win 10 things changed and a valid cross-signing certificate is mandatory.
