I'm gonna do the usual in this case and say that 40 isn't really old these days, mostly because I'm just a few years away from reaching that milestone myself and don't wanna think too hard about it, you still have decades ahead of you.

I'm currently living with my 94 year old grandpa, moved in with him after my grandma passed a few years ago, and while I can clearly tell that being long lived and surviving everyone else has its obvious issues, it doesn't seem to be as awful as some imagine it.

In my late teens / early twenties I was sure I'd be dead by 40, so why bother taking things slowly or thinking about the future?
Here I am, my 40th birthday a long gone memory, happier than ever before. Don't let numbers dictate your life, just take every day as a gift and you will be surprised how life turns out and what it still holds for you. One thing that changed: I do take things more slowly (deliberately - it really helps appreciating the seemingly little things in your life, like having a roof over your head and something to eat each day, or being happy about that lovely butterfly that crossed your path).
I still try not to think about the future and live life in the moment. Looking back at my life so far, you really have no clue what the future brings anyway.

And no, you will never feel like you are a grown up. Thankfully!

I am now 47, and can unfortunately confirm there is some crotchety-ness awaiting you for the next chunk of years. But whatever, there's also good games, tasty good, and stuff worth doing.

Hearty congratulations on the achievement, as one of the 40+ brigade myself I can tell you it's all down hill from here ...er..... life is like a box of choc- ....er....🤔.....life's isn't any more crap than it was the day before....yes I'll go with that one.
