Is difficulty in videogames important for you?
Of course. Sometimes I specifically seek out a game that is simple and carefree.

Do we talking about GTA series?
Sit down, relax and KILL THEM ALLL!!!!!

Certainly.
The Stanley Parable, Life is Strange and even Stardew Valley are just a few examples of games that have close to no level of difficulty to speak of, yet they are still some of my favorite games to date.
Sure, I love a Dark Souls as much as the next guy, but difficulty is not needed to make a game great.

Can the lack of difficulty be applied as criticism to The Stanley Parable and Life is Strange though? Considering that they are more story-based games.
...Unless of course, you talk about the difficulty of getting different endings, that I can definitely understand... DX

I hope you dont mind if i add a hat in time in your list. Eventhough i always play every game on the highest possible difficulty games but its always nice to play a easy game to chill out and not stress too much.

I do the same, And I totally agree.

You play a game to enjoy, some people enjoy a game being difficult. They like the learning curve, something they can brag about perhaps. Once such game is Don't Starve. I have No Idea how to play the game and I kept dying after the 1st couple of days. I got frustrated then that is when I started my journey on Twitch.
DS was the 1st game I started watching on Twitch and subsequently got more involved with that community. Its a great and fun game, great replayability. It has a very steep learning curve after which you basically has to maintain the gameplay. Meaning it can get repetitive but it does not mean it isn't fun often than not after surviving over a thousand days you can get burn out with the game. You however will return to the game whenever something is new or you missed the fun.
Some games are unreasonably hard imo to satisfy a crowd of Difficulty challengers. Most of the time I find that to be platformers like Super Meat Boy. Yes, we need difficulties in games and we need different types of games.
Most importantly is, Overlook the difficulty, find a spot where you are most comfortable and enjoy the game. I am pretty sure a game developer prefer you finishing their game than dumping the game after 2-3hrs of frustration. Pretty much like a chef, if you only ate 10% of their food.
Cheers, Cruse~

Plenty of fun casual games.
Infact with life being time-consuming now (children are timesinks) I play casual more than the hardcore RPG of old.
Of course I'll still cram in my time with those when I can too, there's nothing mutually exclusive about the 2.

The only game I couldn't bring myself to finishing because it was too easy was Prince of Persia (reboot). It's an action game in where you literally can't die. But take Telltale games, for example, which I adore. They provide virtually no challenge, but I still like them. It comes down to the type of game and the coherence of the difficulty.

For me, it doesn't matter how "good" the story and characters are; boring game-play makes a boring game. However, I can enjoy an easy game if it has enough mechanical polish and at least has a semblance of a difficulty curve, like Super Lucky's Tale. Even the "challenging" DLC in that game was easy, but aside from some camera issues and other minor things here and there, the game didn't really have any flaws.

I can definitely understand that. I may overlook low difficulty if it has potential for good story and characters but only to a certain point.
Like Dead State. Ugh! Seriously, not only that game was not only super easy once you knew how to handle things overall, but also the progression was soooo slow that I eventually just lost patience to know what happens next and uninstalled it.
And that's without talking about the bugs... DX

Absolutely. Kirby's Epic Yarn gets flack for its lack of fail states, but it's one of my favorite Kirby games due to its creativity and pleasant tone. In general, I prefer games that aren't complete cakewalks, but interesting writing, gameplay, settings, atmosphere, and the like are plenty to make the experience worthwhile.

I don't have a lot of time to play anymore so the lower the difficulty the better. I even choose an easy difficulty more often than before because I want to enjoy the game and not to seek frustration from missing split second actions that are usually artificially added to synthetically increase the difficulty.

It all depends on the type of game. If the gameplay revolves around fighting like in strategy or action games then it will be boring without any challenge. If its more of a story based game, whether or not its easy or hard just isn't an issue since your enjoyment comes from good story.

Despite loving Dark Souls and roguelikes I actually don't care about difficulty at all. If it's there I won't shy from it, but I won't be particularly looking for it. I only play games in Hard if I liked them enough in a regular playthrough in Normal / Easy and want something more from them.

Of course.
Somewhat related, I do appreciate games that allow the difficulty to be changed while playing the game. I hate games where I've invested 50+ hours and then reach a specific battle / scene that I'm unable to beat and can't continue the game. I don't want to play the entire game on the lower difficulty, just that one point to get past it and on to the rest of the story.

That's something I do sometimes too. In Dragon Age Origins for example, I got stuck in a section near the end because all my party members kept dying, so I had to switch to Easy and then back to Normal once I got past that part.
Although, chances are that I was just pretty bad at it. XD

Hey, we all have different skills. I can crush one of my friends at any FPS game, but I sat him down to try Demon's Souls one day and he ran through the first boss without dying once - while it took me hours and multiple deaths.
That's why I love difficulty settings, and even better difficulty settings that can be changed on the fly. Because one person's hard game could be another person's easy game, and visa versa.

I always play games in the lowest difficulty possible, I'm not masochist to keep trying and trying to pass a certain part of a game

The question should be: "Can you enjoy a game despite it being difficult?"
I play games to have a good time, and being stuck for 5 hours on something that should take 5 minutes is really not my idea of fun. I never understood why are gamers so eager to not only excuse but happily accept these hardcore games O.o

Haha, you're spot on. A game that's too easy may become annoying, but a game that's too hard can just completely stop your progress. I don't shy away from a challenge, but my gaming time is limited. If I try the same thing over and over and over again and barely make any progress, there's little incentive to keep trying in hopes that one day I might get lucky and beat it. I'd rather use my limited time to play something else, something I'll actually enjoy, rather than keep pounding my head against a wall.

Can only speak for myself, but when i seldomly like a hard game like Nuclear Throne or Giana Sisters Remake, it´s pedigree to my younger Mega Drive playing habits. Used to get one new game every few months or so (anniversaries & christmas mostly) and simply had to like what i picked.
Sonic, Probotector, Shining Force, Bio Hazard Battle, Zero Tolerance being the worst (and most fun!!!) offenders, from the top of my head.
edit:
Fairness matters a lot!
Artifical difficulty through wonky/unresponsive controls or bullet sponges are a no-go.
But i can live with being shit at a game :D

This is something that just came to mind, so let me ask you: Is it possible for you to enjoy games with overall low difficulty?
Because while I generally think that a game having a reasonable level of challenge is key to enjoying a game, I also think that the game can still be good if the story and characters compensate for it. Do you people think that way, or perhaps you feel differently about the whole thing?
