Hey everyone!

As part of my dissertation which investigates Steam users' engagement towards Steam, I'm conducting a primary research regarding the topic.
I would greatly appreciate if you could spare a few minutes to complete this survey. It takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. I will not use the seperate answers, only the answers as a whole.

To motivate participation, I added 4 giveaway links to the end of the survey (don't rush through the survey though).
The games are the following:

  1. Yesterday (key)
  2. Space Run (key)
  3. Rise of the Argonauts (key)
  4. Tomb Raider GOTY Edition (Steam gift)

Also, those who bump this thread will be put on my whitelist. I have also made a giveaway for those on my whitelist, the game is Fancy Skulls

All the giveaways will be live until 16th March.

Thanks for reading and (hopefully) completing the survey! :)

Update1: Wow, guys, I am surprised and also very flattered by the fact how many of you completed the survey and bumped the thread! :) Also, I forgot to mention a few things (I had to rush to attend one of my classes):

  1. I removed the persons from my whitelist before the survey was introduced, but do not worry, I will add them once the survey is over.
  2. Those who bumped the thread will stay on my whitelist after the survey is over.
  3. I am NOT a Valve employee. :)
  4. Sorry if some of the statements made you feel uncomfortable or was hard to understand. I adopted them from academic studies.

Update2 There has been more participants than I expected, there are more than 890 answers, a big THANK YOU to all of you! :) However, as always, there have been some trolls who completed the survey only for the giveaways but fortunately this will not affect the results as I will screen them out.
I don't want to sound insatiable but it would be nice to reach 1000 respondents (because it's a nice round number and for segmentation purposes it's better).

Update3 The survey link will be available until 1 March, after that you will not be able to complete it. The results are expected to be shared in late March (as I will have to translate it from Hungarian to English and I also have a lot of things and projects to do mid-semester :( ) I will post the link in this thread and also create a new thread, so if you do not want to bookmark this thread, you can still come across with it. Once again, I would like to thank all of you to complete my survey! :)

I tried man but the wording in the statements section is just too abysmal and unclear... "my life would be less without steam" less what? and "I would greatly miss steam if it were not available" yeah take my games away I'm gonna be PISSED but I don't care about the client itself... And I think the brands that I associate with my gaming are of the games themselves, not the steam "brand"

Edit: ok i finished it but as someone who has been stuck in market research for way too long now, I feel like you really ought to work on your questions. I dont think people think of brands that provide a service in the same way as those that provide content.

Thanks, wanted to write something similar but you did the job for me. I'm lazy

Well, if you are not emotionally bonded to Steam, you can simply choose '1' to these statements.
Btw most of the questions were adopted from academical papers and suited to Steam which means there could be some problems regarding the wording but I tried to make them as clear as possible.

"I dont think people think of brands that provide a service in the same way as those that provide content." - Well, people are different. There are studies investigating social media platforms and other service providers, and the results show there can be amotional bonds between these service providers (as brands) and the consumers.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback :)

Yeah sorry to ramble hope my tone wasn't too off-putting. I say that, but I still immediately look to see if there is a steam key when I see a game for sale, and rarely consider buying if the answer is no. I feel like its just because its where my library is, though, I associate the Valve brand with tf2 and CS and their other games, not so much with the client.

I am almost always logged into Steam and I use my computer everyday, does it count as "More than once per day"? Nevermind, I picked what I thought was correct. :D

Good luck with your dissertation!

'I would greatly miss Steam from my life if it was not available anymore'

Does that include all the Steam games, or can we assume we'll somehow still keep the library/owned games accesable in some way?

Also, this:
'I often feel guilty about the amount of time I spend on Steam socializing' What if you hardly spent any time socializing on steam? feels a little confused

I had the same reaction about the socializing question. They survey assumes to many things imho.

Exactly, not to mention the few friends I do have on steam are just there for convenience, seeing I most likely talk to them through battle.net or whatever.

When I'm playing a game on steam I tend to feel like LEAVE ME ALONE!! Can't you see I'm trying to play a solo game?!?!

That last sentence made me laugh like a crazy person, I need to act normal for a while now to not attract the people with the white suits...

Yeah I feel guilty wasting my time playing games sometimes, but never for, like, what, dicking around in the client?

'I would greatly miss Steam from my life if it was not available anymore' - This statement is about Steam but I understand that it is hard not to think about the games when Steam is mentioned. However, in this context losing Steam would NOT also mean losing your games.

'I often feel guilty about the amount of time I spend on Steam socializing' - Yeah, my mistake, double statement (feeling guilty snd socialisng).

Thanks for the feedback! :)

I think some questions should have more options. I think 3-5 points would have been better than 7. You either disagree or agree with something. I always found it stupid when surveys had options like disagree, strongly disagree and partially disagree. You either disagree with something or you don't. Or you may be ignorant on the issue and then you're not sure, which would be the neutral option. I always found some of the statements to be stupid, but that may just be me.

Well, there won't be changes in the questions, but could you give an example of the questions you found lacking options?

As for the 3-5-7 point scales, the studies I used as a basis of my study used 7 point scales and to be more consistent I also chose this dimension.
The statements were adopted from academical studies, I found them pretty good but we are different :)

Thanks for the feedback! :)
