More like 12 if you only count public/contributor giveaways.

You're late to the party.
Also short description: Minecraft/terraria/farmville/binding of isaac.... Lol.
And you know how people are, if its not 75% off, its not good to giveaway for most.
I wonder... this could be construed as a very indirect form of begging.

If you wanted to avoid accusations of begging, then you should have waited until you owned it. Everyone can see you currently do not.

It doesn't really "play" like minecraft at all either. I mean what idiot would stand around outside at night in minecraft hugging a torch? You'd build a house... probably a dirt house/hole in a hill. I guess maybe... vaguely it plays like minecraft when you're caving. But even then, not really. It's its own game and it stands on its own two feet. All it needs is to let us use our excess gold to make a monocle and don't starve will near perfection!

SURVIVAL? MINECRAFT
CRAFTING? MINECRAFT
VOXELS? MINECRAFT
PERMA-DEATH? ROGUELIKE
As if genre labels weren't misleading enough, now we're just labeling games as clones of other games. It's idiotic.
Comment has been collapsed.
it looks so cute ;__; if it just wasnt singleplayer only...
Comment has been collapsed.
I have it. It's a fun game. I wouldn't call it a minecraft/terraria/binding of isaac clone.. >> Kind of tired of people saying that about any game that has something to do with collecting, etc. You do collect things to survive, but that doesn't make it a clone.
(and sorry that's not directed at you!)
That being said, I have a lot of fun for it. I traded around and got a few keys for it, and have been enjoying it. You try to survive as long as you can, and there are plenty of surprises with some enemies (I won't go into depth because it adds to the game imo). There are also other passive creatures, such as beefalos and rabbits.
Each world is random generated, however if you die you can start again in the same world. You can also create a new world at any time, but it'll reset your "days survived." You also gain exp after death, which only unlocks new characters at this time. Each character has their own "skill:" the first character, Wilson, grows a beard. Doesn't sound like much but it's kind of fun to see. You can also shave and use the beard trimmings.
I don't want to spoil too much, cause I feel like it's nice going in and not knowing what to expect. There's a new update coming out soon, that'll add more enemies to make the game "harder" to survive.
Also, characters each say different things about objects/creatures in the world. It is nice to see the differences, but after a while it's not a big deal. :)
I really like the graphics, and if anyone is interested I'd suggest buying from their site. Why? more money for them, and four keys for you. (2 chrome and 2 steam) Same price. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Aw, chrome keys too ;-; That's good to know. I'm pretty sure I'll end up buying that game for someone at some point, haha.
Comment has been collapsed.
My first thought when playing the game was that I was playing a young Tim Burton thrown into the woods. I like Tim Burton, so that was cool. :') I like the simple but different art style. Honestly, I didn't know anything about the game at that point. I wasn't sure what to do really, but the name of the game was "Don't Starve" so I figured that was the main point.
You then go around exploring, collecting stuff, hunting for food, crafting stuff, killing stuff, being killed by stuff... Making science! And though it might sound boring to some, it can get pretty involving.
It's been more than once that I've almost starved IRL while playing the game, ironically enough. So that's to say I found it pretty addictive. "I'll just play for a couple of nights..." and then hours go by because I don't feel like stopping. What it has in common with Minecraft and Terraria is the survival and exploring element, and the crafting I guess, but its a game on its own, really. The game is a 2D "3D", 2D graphics, but the camera rotates. You can either use the mouse or the WASD keys to move.
They're adding a lot of stuff and updates are pretty frequent. So far they've seemed very responsive to feedback as well, so I'd say the game is worth it. If you play it hardcore you might get a little bored after two days of playing it nonstop, as a friend of mine did because he explored his whole world (worlds are random, though) and crafted all there was to craft. If you die a lot like me or doesn't mind replaying the game in a different world you'd probably be good for longer, though. :')
I'm kind of bad at making reviews, but if there's anything in particular you'd like to know, feel free to ask! :)
Edit: Hahah, it seems taylynne beat me to it, and with a better review too :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I think yours is better! You mention a lot I didn't, like making science! Which is a pretty big thing in this game :) I really agree with the addictiveness.. Many times I've told myself "I'll stop once it's day" but then I tell myself "oh one more day, I wanna test something" and it keeps on going. x)
The only thing I'd like, is if you could start over for inventions without clearing your characters. (I don't believe there is a way to do this) and I would rather all my science points reset when I die!
They're constantly updating too, with new things. I can't wait to see how it is when it's done.
Comment has been collapsed.
Aw, but you explained the game much better and said a bunch of things I didn't too. <3
It's fun to play with friends simultaneously on different computers too.. specially when they start screaming about something they found for the first time, haha.
I was surprised to see my research points didn't vanish when I died. And that the world didn't reset either. I guess if it did, people would take a little longer to get bored, since they'd have to explore all over again. Perhaps we should suggest that on the forums if it hasn't been suggested already? xD
I want backpacks soon ;-; it's hard to be a hoarder in these games, so little you can carry.
Comment has been collapsed.
Add them together and it's perfect review then! :) It is though, I remember when I first saw the gobbler. I freaked out, didn't know what the hell it was and if it was going to attack me or not. I instinctively ran away from it, only to see it didn't follow me. So I ran back to see what it was when it ran into a bush never to be seen again x)
[sorta spoiler] I freaked out when I saw a tree turn into a treeguard. Ever since then, every time I see a tree "grow" I watch it closely to see if it becomes a treeguard.. I'm also weary of planting pinecones: what if this one becomes one of them...[/sorta spoiler]
I think someone suggested something like it (the option to start over with a clean slate, and maybe get a reward for it; though I'd like to have the option, without losing unlocked characters!), but they mentioned cod, so first reply was "No thanks, i dont want to turn Dont Starve with a COD shitty system that no one can see because this game is singleplayer" :\
Whenever I die, I just start a new map.. I think it'd be boring to play same one over and over!
I look forward to the next update! Backpacks will make the game funner. :) Even the chests don't hold much :( And ever since they've lowered stack sizing, my chests are full of rocks lol. But I like that you can't carry a million things! It's sad, but at same time it makes surviving more of a 'chore' :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Ahaha, the same thing happened to me with the gobbler! Good to know I wasn't alone on that xD When I saw it running I tried chasing it, but it was too fast for me.
[sorta spoiler reply]Me tooooo ;-; I was so lucky to have a brave piggy at my side. It died honorably. I was sad, but also hungry.. so it all ended well in a way, I suppose.[/sorta spoiler reply]
I've died a couple of times on the same map too, I guess I'll start doing it like you and starting a new map altogether after all. ;_; And yeah, I suppose the inventory limits are kind of a hate-love thing.. It makes the game a little more realistic, but at the same time it can be frustrating. I guess when the game is already so simple, they can't risk the players getting bored so fast for it being too easy.
Comment has been collapsed.
I kind of like having the same map, it lets me strategize a little more, they're fairly large maps. Although two lives ago I did start a fresh map completely and I think this will be me record setting life. I got really lucky with an experiment. I wanted to see if I could get the beefalo to do battle with a certain swamp creature. The experiment was a HUGE success, after gently nudging the beefalo into the nearby swamp he got hit once and all his friends charged in. Now there's a herd of beefalo living in my swamp (along with tons and tons of meat, something like 80ish pieces) So, unless I do something really stupid I think I'm golden for a good long while. The fact that I don't have hunger problems any more significantly increases the chances I'll do something stupid though ;p (also gobblers keep eating all my berries after the most recent patch. >=P it fattens them up nicely for when I chase them to the ocean cliffs and make gobbler dinner out of em)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh god.. swamp area ;-; I never stop there. I'm always constantly running. I once stopped because I thought I was safe.. I wasn't. I died. ><
But that sounds awesome! Did you record that experiment? I would really like to see how that looks :)
That's how I slaughter the gobblers too.. They just keep running trying to jump off the cliff..
Comment has been collapsed.
No, sadly I didn't think to record it (there was a great moment too, where I died and my heart skipped a beat as I couldn't remember if I'd made an effigy or not). And yeah, the swamp tends to be where I die the most. The beefalo are still living in the swamp, as far as I can tell they've mostly conquered the place. I've been wondering if they reproduce at all, it's really hard to tell since the herds tend to be so large. Did you read that the gobblers were an attempt to combat berry bush hoarders? That's also why the bushes need to be fertilized now. You'd think I'd be mad that my bushes are all sickly looking now, but actually I'm pretty happy about it. I'm excited to see where the game will go as it gets older.
Comment has been collapsed.
A shame! But still a really interesting experiment. I wouldn't have ever thought to do that. But maybe they do.. perhaps they just "spawn" and that's their reproduction.
I didn't know that though, I thought it was just cause turkey day was coming up to be honest xD But I'm glad they're doing more to help with the bush farming. Someone suggested to make it so that if there are so many in a certain area, their growth is stunted. I think that would be a great way to help out as well, since it makes sense. If they're basically on top of each other, one of them is going to end up hogging some nutrients!
I look forward to all the things to make the game harder to survive. So far, I have no issues with food. I haven't since I started playing. I have had issues with not noticing that monster meat damages my health (killed myself this way), or accidentally attacking beefaloes when picking up manure :(
One thing I love about playing games in beta/alpha, is seeing how the grow and shape out! I look forward to everything they add to this game. :) The devs said if you live past 50 days you're in the "unknown" as they haven't really worked with the game beyond that length of time! So once they do, I'm sure they'll crack down even more on farming bushes, and farming farming... would be awesome to see rabbit getting into crops, or crows trying to steal recently planted seeds..
Comment has been collapsed.
huh, well I feel all accomplished now ;p I'm on day 53 lol. But yeah I have a berry bush farm, and am kind of happy to see it being nerfed. Ever since I found out (by accident) that you could relocate plants with the shovel I went on a spree gathering everything I could and sticking it all in neat little organized rows at my main camp. I've also started transplanting fireflies from all across the island into my main camp, originally they were going to be "spooky lights" but the pumpkins weren't growing very often so I dropped a firefly on the ground and realized it still made light. (they light up in chests too, but it's kind of inconsistent). I guess this is the sort of thing that happens when the dangerous life starts to stabilize a little bit. ;p players start experimenting with what they can get away with.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh nice :) I haven't made it that far.. yet!
I love figuring things out by accident though, makes the game more fun! I couldn't figure out how to get science points for a while, then I just put something in it for the hell of it, and got points!
I don't have a berry farm though, I normally pick up a lot during my wandering sessions, so I haven't felt the need to plant a bunch near each other. I also have not made it so far! After a certain point you've explored everything.. might as well as settle down and experiement :) Which is why I hope they add a lot more to the game, to help combat that stabilization. The nerfing helps, but I think we'll need more than just that.
Though the fireflies should move! And that's silly they light up chests, apparently manure does as well some times (how this works, I'll never know); both of which they plan on fixing! I haven't ran into any pumpkins yet, or grown any... I was looking forward to being able to making those spooky lights but sad to hear they're rather rare :(
Comment has been collapsed.
I got two pumpkins total from my farm plots in all the time I've been playing. I've never seen one growing naturally sadly. Also I have my berry farm, but I almost never actually eat the berries lol. I just kind of have it... because... I'm not really sure, compulsion I guess. In minecraft I tended to build huge wheat farms.. and then never eat bread at all. Same thing with mob grinders, I'd build them simply because I could. Once built I'd hardly ever actually use the things.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't think they do grow naturally... a lot of the other fruits/veggies don't (at least not from what I've seen). You just have to hope that those seeds you picked up are pumpkins I suppose! :(
But that is liable! I like having berries at first, but once I get enough meat, I'm pretty much just eating that. Though I feel like the berries heal more than cooked morsel...
I would think grass farming is more useful than berry farming; though they're normally really abundant in one area, I haven't felt the need to line them up to keep them near each other.
Comment has been collapsed.
<,< ok really going to bed now. But one last thing, the berries probably do heal you more. I know honey definitely refills your health by a ton. Almost no hunger filled by it though. I was using grass for fuel at one point since it was so abundant and easier to get than logs, fun times ;p
Comment has been collapsed.
haha :) from what I know honey is a great healer, but nothing else. So I'd get a stash of it and save it for when you really need it! I just ran around and didn't notice I didn't have enough grass for fires... and by time I noticed it was night :( I was playing as willow so I got to see her skill in action, but I have to say it did terrify me some, cause the fire wouldn't appear until that wooosh noise came along signifying that you're about to be attacked. D:
Comment has been collapsed.
The swamp is pretty safe if you know where to stand though, you kind of have to memorize the right path. Usually you can see a little part of the tentacles trying to pop up when you get somewhat close, and if you step back, they go back under without trying to attack you. So running blinding usually kills me more than walking slowing, hahah. ):
Btw, if I'm not mistaken monster meat doesn't take a toll on your health if you don't cook it, but I'm not sure now... Tricky, you'd think cooking it would make it better, but it actually makes it 'toxic', haha.
Comment has been collapsed.
Monster meat has killed me when it was cooked :( And when it was uncooked it took some damage.. I don't remember how much though. I didn't even know it was toxic until it killed me! I went on forums to see what happened, and that's how I found out. :(
I tried to be safe in the swamp! But it never works out :( The tentacles killed my first piggy friends! I liked them so much :( "I love friend!" .. such an enthusiastic group! I just never stop in a swamp.. And try to follow the brick paths. But I stopped on the path once and the damn thing got me D:
Comment has been collapsed.
Aw, odd. I could swear I ate some uncooked monster meat and nothing happened.. ): I guess I better be careful then!
Ah, the art of going through a swamp with pigs.. I haven't mastered it yet ;_; They seem to love rushing into things on their own, don't they? I was fooled by the brick paths too... I thought if I always walked on them I'd be safe! It worked for a little while, but after a certain area I found out it wasn't true, there were 2 tentacles right on the path, one next to another. ):
Ahaha, I looove the awkward way the piggies talk. Never fails to make me smile. xD
Comment has been collapsed.
Hahaha, nice! I've yet to meet the Beefalos on my map, I usually get impatient waiting for my berries to grow back and end up being raped by tentacles. D':
Comment has been collapsed.
They live in the yellow grassy plains type area. They're cute, smelly, and full of meat.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nearly every time a gobbler pops out it startles me :( I keep thinking it's something else trying to kill me! xD
But poor piggy! Did you know you can put hats on pigs?! I just learned this out but haven't been able to try it [sorta spoiler] I went to try it but the group of piggies near me were slaughtered by werepigs .. who then killed me :([/sorta spoiler]
I think it is nice that we can choose to use the same map or not though! If I die right off in the first few days and didn't get to explore much, it is nice that we have the chance to fully explore the land! And they're making the invo a bit smaller with the backpack update, but the backpack adds 4 more spaces than what we have now. It can get to be really annoying early in cause you can't do anything. Once you're out of space you're forced to leave some things behind, in order to create the science machine and/or chest. :(
On my chrome game, I have a map where all the islands are apart of another, so there are no bridges! It's the first map I've run into that is like this, but it's apparently rather common place. Have you had a world like that? Some people on the forums said they just create new worlds until they get a map like this..
Comment has been collapsed.
Never had one like that. My current world is actually the opposite as far as I can tell. It seems like all the islands are smooshed into one giant island with overlapping biomes and what not. It's really interesting. O.o I also have a very high level of graveyards wich is mildly concerning, I keep expecting a zombie attack or something, but so far so good.
I'll have to try giving my piggies straw hats some time, or maybe I'll have them help me go on a spider genocide so we can all be dapper in our top hats!
Comment has been collapsed.
Mine is a weird... line of islands, some overlap a lot, others just barely touch. But the graveyards are always spooky.. it's nice to dig up graves, but I'm the same way.. I'm worried something is going to pop out and kill me. If they don't have zombies yet, they should really add them... especially if you dig up the grave! The zombie wants their items back!
I want to see piggies in top hats! I think they'd look quite fancy! Everyone will be jealous of your friends.. Even I am, just thinking about it!
Comment has been collapsed.
Imagine the amount of spider silk needed though >.<;; 16 per hat. That's a whole lot of angry spiders. Speaking of angry spiders, I found out by accident that you can fight using the torch. ;p you should try it sometime. Was definitely an interesting night.
Comment has been collapsed.
Would take a long time :( But spiders are pretty abundant.. at least they have been for me. It would still take a while though! Spiders are mean anyway! they deserve it :(
I haven't used the torch to fight though, I wasn't sure how to.. they show it in the video, but it looked like trees were catching fire just cause they ran by the trees lol. I'll try it though! I want to see how it goes. I'm playing as willow(?) so I won't have to worry about dying because of fire.
Comment has been collapsed.
You just equip it an hit them like any old weapon. And yeah... I didn't really need to worry about darkness that night, the fire took out pretty much the whole forest since the flaming spiders were running everywhere chasing me. Speaking of nighttime... even just talking about this game eats up hours of my time X_x time to head to bed, work in the morning. Was fun chatting with you Taylynne.
Comment has been collapsed.
I see.. I will try this then! I can just imagine them running around in pain! Silly spiders. But the sad thing is that forest won't grow back :( Unless you have pinecones!
I know what you mean though! It's pretty fun to talk about, I learn a lot of it from others, and it's always nice to hear what other people have done :) But sleep well/take care! It was nice chatting with you as well, Audaxviator, and hearing of your experiment! :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Whaaa.. the berry bushes need to be fertilized? D: I didn't know about that!
I always kind of sneaky loot the silk from the spiders during the day, somehow there's always a few lying about and no spider to attack me, haha. But using an weapon against them instead of a tool makes things a little easier when I do have to fight them head on.
You guys definitely seem way further ahead on the game than I am, though. I wish I didn't have so much work to do, I want to plaaay. xD But I love how we kind of turned this part of the thread into a discussion about the gameplay, haha <3
Comment has been collapsed.
They will be in the new update! I don't know if they do just yet though :(
I've never seen silk lying around, I've always had to kill those buggers. They're not that bad, when there's a few at least. One on one they're real easy... I walked by a large nest area of them right as evening hit, and there were so many of them.. I ran away as far and as fast as I could!
But I dunno! Some things you've said I didn't know about! And I only just recently ever had a piggy friend :( I think everyone discovers different things, so can't really determine who's further by that.. Not even by days survived! Cause you could survive a long time and never discover anything :( but it is nice to talk about it!
Comment has been collapsed.
I've yet to make a hat but I did have a piggy betray me! I even made him a fire so he'd keep me company in the swamp at night and not run away. Such a terrible decision.... I kept running in circles, unsure of what was worse, the darkness, the raging werepig or the possibility of a tentacle sneaking up on me...
My map has some really long bridges. It starts out in a bunny village and then you need to get past the swamp to get anywhere. ;_; I'm really considering trying a new map now. It's a bit of a pain to get to the places I really want, they're all so far! I'm still undeciding on where I should build my base camp though.
Comment has been collapsed.
Betrayal! By those nice piggies. :( I thought werepigs would leave after night, but I saw three slaughter the piggy camp near me.. they ended up getting me too... I hope that's just a glitch!
I'd run in circles though... tentacles are scary :( And once day comes can just run away from them all! lol
I hate the swamp though :( I'd restart it if I had to deal with that. It sucks though if they're ALL really long.. A few every now and then is fine I'd think, but if they all are, that really stunts your exploration!
Comment has been collapsed.
Woah. Okay, questions.
How's the combat? (I'm guessing this is where people make comparisons to Binding of Isaac.) Is it fluid, are there skills to use or is it just weapon-based, how's the weapon variety, can you craft weapons?
You said collecting stuff. How much do they impact gameplay? Like, key items, or just food/ammunition/materials for crafting?
What can I build/craft? (And is it discovery-based or recipe cards?)
Comment has been collapsed.
Combat is fine I suppose... You can fight with pickaxe, axe, or spear. It is basically spamming left mouse button to get it done. No skills at this point. Only one real "weapon" at this point, and one armor.
You collect different foods, materials, and random items. You can use materials to create stuff, such as a torch, or a trap. You "invent" new items with the science and alchemy machine. You can invent with science points, which you get by taking items and "breaking" them down in the science machine.
I don't really want to spoil too much, but you can build with pretty much everything. And what you can't build with you break down for a lot of science points. You can make armor, weapons, tools (to collect resources or fish, etc), fires, spells, containers, tents, "fashion" items (like hats!), and so on. You don't have to actually "discover" them, you just need the science machine to see all the "recipes" available, though only some are unlockable via the alchemy machine.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're more than welcome! If you're really not sure and you have some spare games lying around you wouldn't mind trading for, I'm sure you could get a copy or two relatively easy over at the forums. I got my keys there, without much hassle :)
Otherwise you could split the price with friends! Get four keys from their humble store (3$ a piece), but two will be chrome keys (which may or may not be to convert into steam keys; I'm not sure, I haven't tested with my chrome key, as someone said you lose the chrome version if you get a steam key with it, and I purposely traded for steam and chrome keys so I could have both for now ><)
Comment has been collapsed.
Just to complement taylynne's reply, I believe you can fight barehanded too, if you CTRL Click on enemies(not sure if it's CTRL or SHIFT or ALT really, but it's one of them..)
The recipes are pretty much all there for you take a look at from the start, but you need a science machine + science points to be able to unlock some of them.
Some items might seem useless at first but you might end up finding use for them afterwards. Not sure if I'd call them "key" items yet.. but there might be some. Most of the fun in the game lies in exploring and finding out what certain items do and what you really want to carry with you on a trip. So we say too much we might end up spoiling it for you. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Me too! I only found out after looking at the forums for a while, haha.

I'm still trying to figure out what the heck to do with bee stingers.

I'm certainly not the barehanded type, but I love seeing the option there in games. Heck, I love optional stuff in general (which is why I play a lot of RPGs).
Thank you for the extensive responses :) it's helped a lot in forming my decision.

I'd like to add, I just check the forums! Apparently they're changing up researching/creating recipies/new objects.. And I think it's for the better :)

if you are looking into this game just play this one:

yeh, i contacted support about that (entered like 100 giveaways at once) so no banning on me (already got 10 days :P)
oh btw, if u read short description you would have got that its a variety and u can draw lines too different games
sorry for the confusion

Not true! They're all clones! They all suck away hours and hours and hours of your life with no remorse. So they're obviously the exact same thing.
Even if they're fun for different reasons. So far I think Don't starve is the most fun for short term reasons. and minecraft for long term. Terraria I haven't really been able to get into that much, so I can't really give much of an opinion there.
Comment has been collapsed.
what is it with people calling games "clones"... for one, terraria and minecraft are different so stop comparing them! for two, because a game is similar in style, THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT A CLONE...
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually minecraft multiplayer setup is so painful i kinda regret buying it. I bought it to play multiplayer, but it needs so many stuff like portforwarding etc...
With terraria it only needed hamachi, i bought minecraft for multiplayer, yet i still couldnt play :/
