How to check whether the game is Steam reedemable?

Do you mean on retail games? If so, just check the back cover, if it displays "steamworks" this means it's reedamble on steam.

But what, if I want to buy activation key? For example - recently I bought BF2 and I didn't knew format of cd-key before that.
