Wow, the trailer is awesome!
Just like the Ingress ones.
And as an Ingress player I can tell you that the game is fun, but not nearly as awesome and real world as the trailers xD
I'm pretty sure Pokémon GO will be akin to a re-skinned Ingress.
You go out, discover Pokémon (Portals), catch them (claim the portal) and battle other players (fight over the portal) together or alone, as well as trade (drop items).
It's nice and makes you discover new areas, but aside from looking at where you're going and talking to other players, it's 100% on your mobile phone.
Nothing to do with augmented reality.
And you do indeed need to have GPS and mobile data enabled (or be in WIFI-range) for the game to work. That also means big events with hundreds of people as shown with the Mewto part would lead to a lot of people not being able to play, as the data lines would be overloaded. Though to be fair that would not be the fault of the app. And knowing how eager people are to travel and come together for Ingress, I have no doubt there'd be even bigger groups for Pokémon GO.
But still, this is Pokémon and the whole setting is more interesting and "bring people together"-ish than Ingress.
Only thing I don't like so far is the accessory. It's okay for kids, but not something I can see a lot of adults (who yes, also play games) wearing. And why the elongated form? Why not just a round Pokéball?!
Since it has some functions I suppose they can't make it smaller, but maybe make different versions, like plain silver, gold etc. for teens and adults? So that it would look more like normal jewellery?
I'll be sure to start playing as soon as I can :D

Yeah, I know, I don't expect it to be nearly as close to the real experience. :P
Ah... The need to have mobile data enabled at all the time is something that will probably not allow me to play... :/ I thought you would be able to play without it if you weren't interacting with other people/events.
I guess that form is to make it resemble the location icon design. That's what I understood anyway.

"Also, for countries like mine (Brazil) with high crime rates, we won't be able to fully enjoy playing it as having your cell phone out in the open increases the risk of getting robbed."

It sounded interesting in theory: a Pokemon game that runs on non-Nintendo hardware, and one that sounded like it might be a little closer to that MMO people keep asking for with an augmented reality twist. Sounds interesting.
But am I the only one that thinks in practice it sounds kind of boring? Apparently combat has been made into a minigame so that there's very little strategy left. It's my understanding that advancement is grinding-based now, not fighting based (you have to keep catching the same Pokemon to advance it). Features like trading, breeding, move selection, and head-to-head PVP also are absent, I believe. And all the info I've seen suggests that the list of Pokemon in the game is small, perhaps just the original 151. Oh, and of course there are micro transactions.
Also, a reviewer pointed out something interesting: this game is aimed largely at kids. But it incentivizes going places in real world geography, and some of those places may not be very safe. I wonder if that won't lead to a lawsuit, or at least another case of collective parental outrage.

Yeah, it seems the game is not as good as it could be, but there's always room for improvement in that kind of game. Yes, there are only the original 151 (or 150) Pokémon right now.
And I don't know about that kids thing. The trailed showed young adults, so I thought it was aimed at existing Pokémon fans (many which are adults now).

Yeah, and the charm is not wasted on me.
But you know a lot of kids will be playing. And, given what I've seen (I'm still messing with it), it routinely locates the markers for Pokemon on private property, in back yards and such. If not children getting into danger stories, then I think we'll be hearing older people trespassing stories. :)

Interesting - what phones does this support? I have a Samsung Note 4 and it says it's incompatible with my device :(

EDIT: It's out, but it seems it's not available everywhere. Initially only US, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. But you can play if you get the APK somewhere.
Thanks perrolijo for the heads up:
How come this is not here yet?
Check the news here and the direct link for the trailer here.
It's basically a F2P game for Android and iOS that uses geolocation, and is also meant to be played with others out there. There's also an accessory that'll allow you to know when a Pokemon is around (by vibrating) and do basic commands like throwing a pokéball to capture it. They'll probably make money by selling pokéballs or something...
Also, for countries like mine (Brazil) with high crime rates, we won't be able to fully enjoy playing it as having your cell phone out in the open increases the risk of getting robbed. :P
BTW, is that background on the phone screen at the end a real place? It doesn't look like to me, but I've read that it'll use augmented reality...
