I've got a load of games I've never gotten to yet, but I still don't think I could pass up a big game if I really wanted to play it right away. I already know I'll be purchasing Don't Starve at some point soon.

I think I'll join too. Will make an exception with numbered Humble Bundles and other really good one-time offers (and If there will be another stupid achievement this year which will require you to buy/gift a game, I'll might buy one for ~1€), but that's it.

I didn't buy any games in 2012 (for myself) does that count as a head start?

If we all made the same promise where will all the gifted games come from, and who would support all the indie bundles? Also wouldn't not buying new games be selfish as the profits from the lost game sales lower profits for their companies, and in return lowering the amount of money that can be paid to the coders, musicians, artists, ect. that created the games? For an indie game maker this could make or break them. Are we really willing to destroy peoples lives for the sake of a silly backlog?

:D
Just make an exception for gifts. I think it would be best to make the resolution "don't make your backlog larger".
Me, I'm spending more on Kickstarter than I normally spent on games, because there I feel that I'm really supporting devs. I'm paying sums that I normally wouldn't pay for games (that is, $10 or more :). It does potentially add to my backlog (I've yet to get a finished game from all the projects I backed, but I do have a backlog of pre-release games now), but I'm willing to live with that.

I love backing games on Kickstarter, and don't mind the backlog. Collecting is half the fun and if I actually had to beat every game I own before buying a new one I would never buy a new game. Between a console, handheld, and PC games I could play for years to come. Also I hardly have time to beat a game since I play tabletop RPGs and miniature games. I prefer enjoying the gameplay of new games then moving on.

Personally I like having a large backlog. I'll focus on one game at a time and then try out a bunch of games after I finish with my current focus. I decide that many games aren't worth my time and toss them aside in very short order. Some get saved for later when I'm in the mood for a particular genre while others just get removed from my backlog altogether.

I probably will actually. My backlog is GIGANTIC, I don't know if it'll be able to support it's own weight if I buy any more.
But I may still reserve a purchase slot for:
Very unlikely I'll buy any of them before next Christmas, but who knows.

I didn't buy any games from the Summer Sale till the Winter sale, so 6 months I went without buying any games. Now my backlog is way too big again, I could probably go a whole year without buying any games and be just fine. Atleast Id save some money up to upgrade my computer.

I have a lot lot games in backlog(above 50) to play...and I never had enough time to play them.
So I will stop purchasing games till next winter and finish my "old" games before I will buy new ones.
Now let's start to flame me and my silly idea.
