Im going to custom building a PC pretty soon. I need it for film school and I would like for it to handle games. I don't need a tutorial, Ive built many computers before. I just wanted to see how many SG members have custom PC's. Id like to know whats under their hood.

Built on budget, handles any game just fine so far:

board: some gigabyte FX990 chipset

CPU: AMD FX6350 (huge AMD fanboy here)

GPU: XFX GTX 660Ti Jetstream

8 gigs o´ram (1600, passive cooled, kingston), 128gb ssd (ocz agility 2), 1000gb data-grave, powered by a 550w XFX psu (80+silver and, important for me, just a single power rail) several fans :), no dvd or blu ray or whatsoever.

Quite a cheap deck, but powerful enough for 1080p resolution.

May I ask what a "data-grave" is? :) Or is it just your nickname for a HDD?

Assuming he uses the ssd for active space, moves junk he doesn't want to sort over to the slower sata drive.

Scarmiglione will be five years old next month:

  • Case: Antec P182 in gunmetal gray
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.0 GHz) with Tuniq TX-2 thermal paste
  • CPU cooler: Thermalright "TRUE"
  • RAM: (2x) 2GB OCZ DDR2 1066 PC2 8500
  • Video card: EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 260
  • HDDs: (2x) 640GB WD 7200 Caviar Black
  • Power supply: 625W Enermax MODU82+
  • Fans: (4x) Nexus Real Silent 120mm B&W
  • DVD: LG something-or-other DVDRW w/ LS
  • Fan ctrl/Temp mon: Scythe Kaze Master

Cost about $1400 and was my first custom build after tinkering with two Falcon Northwests and a Sager laptop (and a couple other very old comps in the 386-era).
I've since added one more hard drive (2TB), but otherwise it's still pretty much the same as it was when I first built it.
The main priority was silence. Secondary consideration was music creation, and third was gaming. Still handles most everything fairly well, but the very latest crop of games this year is starting to push it. I'd build a new one, but I can't afford it -- this one will probably have to tough it out for another year or two.
(Also, it's not named after the Final Fantasy character -- it, and my other computers, are named after Dante's malebranche.)

Built four or five systems now, can't imagine ever buying a desktop pre built. My current rig is an i7 3770k, GTX 770, 16 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD, 1TB HDD, BD-RW. Hooked up to a 27" viewsonic 1080p monitor, razer black widow mechanical keyboard, logitech g700 wireless mouse and g930 wireless 7.1 headset.

Seriously thinking about adding a second 770 in a few months when I can afford it.

Umm, some older i5 750 that's socket LGA 1156 (bought some gigabyte mobo at bad time, right before they switched to 1155)
Has some cheap but better than stock cooling fan
Radeon HD 7870R 2 GB
8GB RAM
128 GB SSD
1 TB HDD
Antec Sonata case
Whatever PS was cheap last time one died. has blue LEDs in back which I can't see which is good cause I didn't even want that
16:10 Dell monitor from 2003 with 1680 x 1050 max rez / also hooked up to 46" Sony Bravia
old logitech laser mouse
cheapest keyboard at best buy
same with speakers

I don't remember the details, lol. I just upgrade the important bits whenever needed for as cheaply as possible.

Mine's pretty old, but anyhow, laugh away:

  • Intel Q6600 overclocked from 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz.
  • P35 Platinum mobo
  • Thermaltake 1200W PSU
  • 6Gb RAM
  • AMD HD 6870
  • 7 mixed size HDDs totalling 7TB storage + a few other USB/hot-swap caddy HDDs
  • Blu Ray writer/HD-DVD reader combo drive + some crappy old beige DVD writer scavenged from some other machine
  • Creative Fatal1ty sound card + breakout box
  • A heap of spaghettified wiring that I need to get around to fixing.
  • R.A.T. 9 mouse
  • Logitech G15 keyboard
  • Logitech 930 wireless cans
  • Thermaltake Armo[u]r case
  • 3 monitors (only half decent one is a 24" Samsung - unhelpfully, the model no. escapes me....)
  • Some Creative 5.1 speakers of some sort or another
  • OS: Various - multiboot (Ubuntu, Win 8, Win 7 (64 bit), Vista). Rarely use anything other than 7 though. Don't hate me.
  • Dynamix UPS-1700 (to stay up during the frequent power outages I enjoy out in the boonies)

Sometime in the future I'll upgrade a few bits, but while it still plays modern games at a decent clip and does everything I need for work, what's the point?
