I am working on building my media center PC to serve as a console rather than purchase any of the existing options, as they all have flaws I would like to avoid. Most notably, they would require yet another device to store, move and plug in and I am too lazy for that!

I've tried to cover most bases when looking for controller-friendly games, but I would love to hear some input from the community at large. The games I have so far (that were specifically acquired with this in mind) are:

  • Castle Crashers
  • Geometry Wars
  • Renegade Ops
  • Darksiders (1+2)
  • Dark Souls
  • Space Marine
  • Magicka

There are also various other controller-enabled games in my library but I can't recall which right at this moment. What I'm looking for now is a racing game (Need For Speed is pretty much the only one I've played), a CoD-style shooter-thing and whatever suggestions you have for things I would be silly to miss having!

I find it much better to play it with mouse + kb. Awesome game anyway, I still play it occasionally.

I would LOVE Dragon's Dogma - but I thought it was console-exclusive? Going to look for the PC port now!

I really enjoyed Blur when I had it on 360. Burnout Paradise was good as well.

Also Sonic Adventure 2.

Do you know if these are controller-supported? Blur isn't on steam and Burnout doesn't specifically say

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haven't played Blur on PC but I found this. Seems that only an xbox controller works unless you use a 3rd party emulator.

And burnout seems to be compatible with any controller detectable by windows. Source

But I've only played these two games on Xbox so can't say from my own experience. Hope this helps.

It does help - thanks! Though it seems like an oversight on valve's part to not list these games as controller compatible in the store

Does GO have the old 1.6 way of purchasing weapons or has it adopted the class builder thing?

No clue, I just saw that it had Big Picture mode and thought it would be a decent recommendation since you seem to be looking for a serious tone shooter :-P.

You purchase at the start of each round if that's what you're wondering. No classes as far as I know.

That is what I was wondering. Haven't played CS in about a decade, but since Halo apparently adopted the COD class model I thought maybe GO had too. Thanks for the answer!

In CS:GO for PS3, you have a "wheel". It's the same method as Dungeon Defenders does for selecting Turrets/Magic/Repair and stuff.

Don't worry, it's pretty comfortable and easy to learn and use.

I highly doubt he will enjoy playing CS:GO with a controller. Cross-platform was also ditched for a reason (PC players would simply pwn the hell out of console players.)

  • Burnout Paradise (Highly recommended)

  • Need for Speed Hot pursuit

Problem with both of these are that steam for whatever reason does not specify controller-compatibility, which makes me kind of vary of buying since I don't care for keyboard racing too much

They support controllers, they are racing games (and console ports). I have them both (on Origin) and they work perfectly with a gamepad.

Magicka isn't really controller friendly.

But basically any cross platform game is good as they're made with controllers in mind anyway. Like Assassin's Creed series, Borderlands, Batman games, Sonic Generations, Skyrim, Deus Ex HR, Sleeping Dogs, Spec Ops The Line etc etc etc

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, it isn't. But I have an easier time remembering the elements there than with the keyboard :)

Got BL1+2, Arkham Asylum, Deus Ex and Skyrim, so that should be a solid base. Going for the AC games whenever I see them for cheap!

Looking through some of your games I saw Bastion, Left 4 Dead 1+2, TF2, Portal. All are fantastic using a controller on the big screen. Owned all of them on my xbox (minus bastion).

I don't think TF 2 has full controller support on PC, as far as I remember it only supports the controller in-game (not in menus). And you would anyway have no chance against K&M players.

But Bastion would be a good choice.

Not sure about the first one but you can in the second one, which is a major improvement over an already awesome game.

Yes you can! My girlfriend uses the computer and I use the gamepad. Also, you can do local split screen co-op with Awesomenauts. Same thing, one uses keyboard one uses mouse. I have done both of these, but I have to say that if you are going to do Awesomenauts split screen then the bigger the screen the better.

Actually no, I don't mean it.

Sure it's fun to play, but I would not say it is an art, or anything like an art
Though I do find that people's claims that "it's all the exact same" are idiotic. I mean, it's a series, of course it's similar.

Not sure I agree with you there. It definitely does appeal to a certain group of people, and it IS nice to have when you'd rather just shoot things without having to think too much.

Plus I like building classes. Even though most of my terrible, terrible ideas turn out to be exactly that

Yeh building classes is fun :D though like you, my classes never really amount to anything. After a while you've tried every combination possible with the worst gun in the game, and still haven't found a way to make it half-decent, let alone good.

Other games that I've enjoyed playing with gamepad: Sonic Generations, Limbo, Batman games (Arkham Asylum/City), Lara Croft and Guardian of light (good for co-op), Bastion, Jamestown (has 4 player co-op), NFS Hot Pursuit.
Try demo of F1 Race stars, it seems like a pretty solid co-op game.
