I'd like to hear everyone's opinions. What are the best post-apocalyptic games ever made? For me, I'd have to say Fallout 3 or maybe X-Com, if that counts.

F3 seems to still be in the middle of the apocalypse, which is a it different from how F 1 and 2 were set. F:NV is much more like the originals and interesting than the 3rd to my taste.

x-com is about a war between humans and aliens, but the world is just fine, not like in madmax or fallout...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i remember xcom games as humanity fight for survival against time since they had no chance to defeat aliens in conventional way. Not to mention that in "newer" trilogy earth is covered with goo and humanity isnt what it used to be. In old Xcom apocalypse only one city remains. In newest one unless you play easy mode aliens usually butcher most of world before you can win. How is that not apocalypse?

Comment has been collapsed.

Read the first post - he did not mention a certain x-com game; I also didn't play all of them, but the ones made by the original developer + ufo:AI. If you take the whole plot in account, there is no way to put this under POST-apocalyptic tag because it is (also) about the war itself, not about an aftermath world. Also, with the first phrase you did describe ww2 (except the aliens part). :P

Comment has been collapsed.

True, original x-com don't count as post apocalyptic, two out of three of newer ones do. As of first post he didnt specify which one he had in mind and I don't believe in best games. Ufo-Afterschock is good game, for me at least, and it is about "after" lost war against aliens. Its actually about interstellar sex too but you have to read the story for that ;P

Aren't most of the of the games are pre-apocalyptic? Sims 3 is pre-apocalyptic, NFS is pre-apocalyptic, FIFA 2013 is pre-apocalyptic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

He probably meant what happened right before, like the war before and leading up to the apocalypse, then the mid would be the time as the nuclear war is happening or the zombie apocalypse happening, and then post is what happened afterwards like Fallout 3. The Walking Dead I think is more mid-apocalyptic because it's as it happened, post would mean that the zombies are gone but the world is recovering... I think all zombie games are mid, and the Fallout series is post. Pre would have to be a World War 3 type game so probably the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series would be pre.

I think the Sims is a post-apocalyptic game : Humans became irradiated because of the nuclear excplosions and now their brains have mutated, damaging the language area and their common sense.
So the point of the game is to help these stupid idiots to rebuild humanity.

There was a war probably, but definitely not apocalyptic. Unless you consider Pokemon world really horrible.

Does post-apocalyptic suggest a horrible world? Only time passed from a tragic event, the event of mutations called pokemon definitely warrants apocalyptic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Indeed it does not. Too used to anything labeled "post-apocalyptic" depicting a horrible world. When in reality that's just a gimmick label for "destroyed" world games now. Yet in magnificent creations like Pokemon it's a deep undertone.
