Are you against emulators? PS1 was the era of the JRPG (And survival horror, but that's neither here nor there)

If Mr PointOMan goes using ePSXe, or if the kind sir has a PSP, I'd suggest Legend of Legaia. Oh my God I love Legend of Legaia. So. Freaking. Much.

Heard that this version wasn't really much of a remake

For, what, $10, though, it's not too shabby an idea to pick it up.

Is there anything worth $10 in it, though? I mean, did they try to improve the textures, cutscenes, background resolution, sound FX and overall audio quality?

If so, then I'd be tempted.

AFAIK all they did was to add DRM.

Seriously, all of the best JRPGs are on the SNes and PS1.

+1. I shelled out $40 last year for one of those DS homebrew carts, partly to use the built-in SNES emulator.

Final Fantasy VII is for sale over at the square-enix store for like $12.

You could always ROM some of the older games. Hell, if your computer is good enough, you can rom 360/PS3.

Like many have said, emulators might be your best choice. PS1/2 were a golden age for JRPG. It's all about the action WRPGs these days.

Final Fantasy Tactics. Legend of Dragoon. Bahamut Lagoon.
Chantelise is good.

Also, before anyone else suggests it: Chrono Trigger.
Beware, though. For after playing it, you might find other JRPGs just pale in comparison.

I don't get why people hail this so much. Don't get me wrong it's a GOOD RPG, but I've never considered it as THE RPG

Final Fantasy 8 has a PC port too, though it has some problems with Nvidia's 8-bit palette support so it will probably look like ass at parts, such as it did for me. It's an extremely flawed game, and the first in the series of some cathastrophic bad Final Fantasy games, but it still captured the bittersweet feel of the last years at school. Also has a weird and complicated fighting system with all that junctioning and stuff, but once you learn it, you'll probably love it. And avoid fucking Triple Triad; you'll have more quality time spent if you grind a shredder on your willy instead.

I despised the magic/junctioning system. A system where you get weaker, the more spells you cast? Great, I'll just be over here. Spamming "Attack" over and over.

Breath of Fire 4, PC release. It runs fine on a modern PC, but has a big problem: there is absolutely no way to launch it in windowed mode.

Septerra Core. Not a japanese development, but still same spirit.

Why not Seiken Densetsu 1 ? The 2 being Secret of Evermore. All three of those are great games.
