Pack it with as much ram as you can, as Adytzu04 said, you need ram for 3D software. The more ram you have the faster renders will go.
I'm still not sold on SSDs just because of their prices compared to regular hard drives with their space. If you go regular hard drive, get one thats 7200RPM, you don't need the 10,000 RPM ones, but you are gonna want more space then what you can get on a SSD. Hybrid hardrives are interesting combo, but I think the extra money would be better served getting a larger hard drive.
If you just want the laptop to be as fast as possible and space does not matter to you, then go with 16gigs of ram and the largest SSD you can get your hands on that has a good rep. You can always go with an extra hardrive later if you need pure storage.

Yeah, I'm thinking I could get away with 8GB of RAM from the start and then just save a bit to get a second 8GB chip later. However I've read a review for the Lenovo Y50-70 and the TN LCD that it has is really bad. The viewing angles are awful and the colours are washed out.

Nvidia yesterday launched the GeForce GTX 970M and GTX 980M
With a little luck you may find an affordable price-drop on a GTX 880M.

I'm using a laptop... so can't exactly change my parts :(

Well LCD isn't a negetive point for me, but I think this slim H.D.D will be your major problem because the rotation speed is 5400 rpm and that wouldn't be good if you want to run games smoothly. Lenovo could have used another H.D.D with 7200 rpm instead or hybrid one.

Hi everyone,
once a few years there comes a time when our hardware becomes too old and it's time for a change. That time has come.
I'm trying to find a laptop (not really considering a PC but it's also a possibility, though I'd prefer a laptop) which would meet my needs but also won't ruin my budget ;) I have about 1k USD (the actual amount varies cause I'm using my local currency as a reference so the budget isn't as important as the specs) to spend and by far the best one I've found is Lenovo Y50-70. There are a lot of configurations coming with this model and the one that would interest me the most would look like this:
Pros:
Cons:
This configuration would cost me around 1200-1300 USD depending on the chosen hardware.
I like the performance of the GTX 860M but I've seen a comparison with a 880M and it's nearly 2x faster... I'm wondering if the 860M would be enough for me in the long run? Laptops with the GTX 880M cost around 1600 USD (which may not sound that much more but given that the exchange rate to my local currency is more than 3:1 that's a significant amount of money).
I would mainly use it for 3D software like Blender / Autodesk Maya, game engines (mostly UE4, probably Unity) and of course gaming ;) The problem with this model is that I can't decide whether I should get 16GB of RAM and a bigger SSD from the start or buy a cheaper version with 8GB plus a slower HDD and later buy a second 8GB chip plus an SSD drive.
Please keep in mind that it won't be possible for me to order from any random place as I'm limited to shops in my country.
Thanks for your help ;)
