On Sep 14th the developers of Black Mesa Source will release "Black Mesa", but not as a complete version. According to the devs: "This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core".
The Xen and BMDM (Black Mesa Death Match) parts will probably be released at a later time as a complete game, like a whole new chapter.

You can now Download the Black Mesa Soundtrack, courtesy of our very own Joel Nielsen, at the very generous price of whatever you want! See the official website.

and stay tuned.

It's about time! They should go for Greenlight :)

Awesome idea! If it goes to GreenLight I think it'll be approved faster than anything else there.

Well, maybe not anything else :P But certainly it will make it!

I agree. It would give them the proper incentives to continue.

...but there's a catch, though. Wouldn't recreating a trademarked game and profiting from it make you a sitting duck for the lawyers @ Valve?

It's a mod though :) So there's no profit to be made no matter what. Free for all!

it's free, so probably valve agrees with this release

I know that, but I have to admit that I'm inexperienced with greenlight... is it a user-based voting system for purchasable games only or are freeware games accepted as well?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've seen plenty of freeware games on Greenlight. I don't see why they wouldn't be accepted :) Slender Source for example.

Cool. They definitely should, then. They need the exposure.

The trailer alone is jaw-dropping

They even have a "Free to Play" button, so only the F2P games are shown :)

isnt it this already done by valve with half life source ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, but half-life source is just HL1 running on source engine (original game runs on GoldSrc engine).
Black Mesa Source is, according to authors : a "Re-imagining/Remake of Valve Software's award-winning PC game, Half-Life". It's a completely new remake with modern standard quality.

To be honest it's not new, as development started in 2004, if I remember correctly...

Wow...8 years and it's still incomplete? :/
Would've been better if they didn't announce anything back then.

It's not incomplete, but it'll be released in two parts, like HL2 Ep1 and Ep2. They just released what is already done now and the remaining will be released in the next part.

half-life source is not a remake. almost everything remained the same as it was in original game (only water was adjusted and some other effects added).
Black Mesa is the complete remake of Half-Life.
Check this 4 years old trailer out if you haven't seen it.

Wait..... they are releasing half the mod and then charging for the rest as a "complete game" isn't again illegal since they don't own the original material?

EDIT : Blah I guess when I read "complete game" I think paid. Yea it just seems to mean it's being broken up into 2 parts since it's taking so damn long. However how long till the next part? Way too long me thinks.

"No. Development on xen is already underway and we hope to have it finished up in a reasonable timeframe. Xen is going to basically be a complete game in its own right, it's not going to be just an epilogue to the game; more of a whole new chapter. It'll be pretty well expanded. I just curious why its Black Mesa: A Half-Life 2 modification ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because it uses the same engine of Half-Life 2, the Source engine (the original game uses the GoldSrc engine). The "Half-Life: Source" game (new version of the first game) uses this new engine too, but all artwork (textures, pictures, models) are the same as the original, except for a few effects, like water for example. After seeing that the game hasn't been improved so much the developers of Black Mesa Source decided to re-make the first Half-Life entirely, using new textures, models, artwork, etc.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because if it were a Half life 1 modification, it wouldn't be on the Source Engine; that being almost the entire point of the mod.
