• A few months ago, I gave away New Star Soccer 5 and reached level 3.
  • Shortly afterward, a game that I had previously given away (Sang-Froid - Tales of Werewolves) went from $15 to $0, and I dropped back to level 2.
  • So I decided to give away Motorama to get me back to level 3.
  • Two weeks later, the option to buy Legends of Aethereus from the Steam store was removed. I had given that away, too, and it was previously $30, so I dropped to level 2 again.
  • I then created a giveaway to celebrate getting engaged, and picked a high enough value game that I was certain it would get me back to level 3 (We Are The Dwarves).
  • Right before that giveaway ended, its price dropped from $25 to $10, leaving me at level 2.
  • Let's try this again. (giveaway ended)

Yeah, that kind of seems like bullshit. Once you earn a level, you shouldn't be able to slip backwards. Your ranking shouldn't be a relative, shifting scale. If the game was valuable when you gifted it, then your status should reflect the value of the game at the time, period.

While I agree with you, it would take a massive amount of space. They would have to keep the price data for every single giveaway based on what the game cost when you made the giveaway.

And what would happen about games that are no longer listed? People usually get screwed on those.

So, it really wouldn't amount to much data. Each value would be stored as floating-point, and with thousands or even millions of those, you aren't talking about much more than Megabytes of space, and space is cheap these days. Besides, they DO keep numbers on every GA already...you can see your history of the point in time where you provided each GA in your stats (although admittedly I haven't been around SG long enough to know if there is a limit to the data retention [i.e., if the numbers older than some relative date go "poof" over time] -- although probably not, because otherwise they wouldn't be able to recalculate your rank without that data).

Even if that were a problem, you don't really need to keep the history to make this fair. Everyone's rank is just a running total. I don't care what the numbers looked like a year ago, so long as the right value was added to my total. So, just bump the person's rank up the appropriate amount, save it, and it doesn't go backwards. If the game value changes, the person's rank doesn't. New GAs for this now-less-valuable game earn less, but not old ones. Totally fair. Plus, it requires less compute time that way, because nothing has to constantly recalculate the rank based upon a set of current values.

This would be feasible if Steam store didn't glitch their prices or have the API bug out. For example, the Daedalic Adventure Bundle when it's on sale would bump the reported prices of the games within to 100 P or something. So people would wait until that bug would happen, and then only give out those games to maximize CV. It would be a waste of support's time to keep track of all of the price glitches seeing as the bundle list often has delays in updating. It's better to keep it based on real time store value

Yeah, that kind of seems like bullshit. Once your bank account reaches a number, it should never slip backwards. Your earnings shouldn't be a relative, shifting scale. If your wage was valuable when you earned it, then your savings should reflect the value of your account at the time, period.

CV is not an arcade score. It is an in-site currency that is supposed to be used as an unlock for higher-levelled games. Before it was renamed CV, it was literally setting a monetary value, down to cents. And like all currencies, it should have inflation. Heck, it should have natural inflation, so you cannot just reach a level and sit back forever, because as the statistics show, the gap between the highest levels and the other ones is already widening in a frightening scale, almost in a worse way than in the real world: in the past 4 months, barely 100 new people entered the level 8-10 club, while the population of level 0-2 increased by over 20,000. The system is elitist and unfair already, removing the only source of inflation would turn it almost into a pyramid scheme, where you either have an advantage just for being here long enough or you need to invest a lot more in a given time frame to reach the same status.

I fail to see the problem here?
lvl8 is damn high, and most lower level users become/stay inactive

Let me rephrase it: the percentage of the users on the top levels, even if we remove the level 0 user base from the equation, is getting smaller, even though their numbers are increasing. It is the real-world "the difference between the upper 1% and the lower 50%(!) in income is getting geometrically wider each year" issue in small here. Only on SG it is even worse as there is no inflation to act as a natural degradation agent.
The only thing that seems to be somewhat of a positive thing is that the mid-levels are managing to stay where they are. (Coincidentally, those are also the levels where I had the lowest amounts of tickets sent due to problems, had to chase around winners, or had any sort of evidence of using bots.)

even though their numbers are increasing

so still getting more crowded :3

percentage is getting smaller,

so more people give less? Isn't that actually bad then?

SG it is even worse as there is no inflation

not that inflation reduces wealth of the rich irl either..

mid-levels are managing to stay where they are.

likely the most active, ambitious and starting to gib more compared to low lvls and leech0rs,
and not burnt out (yet) like high lvls xD

I am not sure. The number of giveaways is increasing at quite a staggering pace, but no breakdown on who is doing that.

increasing in absolute numbers, but when user base grows quicker -> less gibs on average per user
thus bad and next week no gibs left anymore xD (exaggerating obv ^^)

Why my CV stuck at $30??

I agree with you about keeping historical price data. Although this would complexify the database quite a bit, gifting a $30 game that later goes free is pretty messed up right now.
However there is a case where losing level is valid IMO, it's when you gift a bundled game and it's only later added to the bundle list. Some games have been added to the bundle list months after they were actually bundled, which is understandable because it's hard to keep track of all the bundles in real time. This delay can't be a get-level-10-free card, so retroactively setting the CV to 15% sounds fair. (although it is not what happened to OP here)

Yeah, I'm fine with it if they're actually correcting a value issue where someone was essentially over-credited for what they gifted. That's totally fine. But if I gift a AAA game and it launches me to the next level and then six months later that game loses its value, then I shouldn't get my credit taken away simply because the game's popularity or its value-due-to-sudden-bundling changed.
