Only if you don't use it with VAC-protected games.

Its safe then too. VAC doesn't apply until you connect to a VAC secured server.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I don't know why I wrote "games" :/

so far.

To clarify what Zer0mega said, it's safe as long as you do not join VAC-protected servers while idle master is running

Agreed.

It's safe. Also, don't use it while playing games, because cards won't drop.

They drop for me when i play games

They still drop, its just slower.

someone posted a trick where if you open and close a second game (every 10mins or so)while the idle master is running it will actually drop cards faster... seems a little bit too much work and kind of defeats the purpose of having a program do the work for you, but I guess it's an option.... although I have never tried it.

Usually having more games open would simply divide the drop rate across the games, but I've noticed that if you play a game while idling another using Idle Master, the drop rate is severely reduced (and sometimes almost zero) I don't know if it's because Steam changed the rules, but either way it's advised to rather do one at a time since that's long-term efficient.

Suprisingly it is.

Yes it is, but don't use it in VAC protected servers because that may or may not trigger it who knows but better safe then sorry. I have already got and sold almost 100 cards because of it.

I've used it before while playing tf2 in official servers and didn't get banned, it could be dumb luck but IMO if anyone says they got vac banned because of idlemaster they are probably looking for excuses

uh what does VAC have to do with anything, all steam sees is running another game

personally i use spacewar & just rename the appid manually

From Idlemaster's creator:
Can using Idle Master result in a VAC ban?
I don't recommend running Idle Master while you're also playing another game that's connected to a VAC-enabled server. Doing so is the only possible way that Idle Master could potentially trigger a VAC ban, and it also reduces the drop rate of trading cards pretty significantly. To be 100% safe, please close Idle Master before connecting to a VAC-enabled server. The program itself will never communicate with any of these servers, thus it is safe to use Idle Master to idle cards from VAC protected games.

well ya, nobody would REALLY know, but logically it's only using the steam api to 'launch a game', it's not hooking into other games or steam or the gfx driver

Plenty of people have complained about getting VAC banned due to having idlemaster running during games.

I don't play either VAC games or use idlemaster, so I couldn't validate how notable a thing that is :X

I think VAC games might just not like it if Steam detects you running multiple games at once, period?

VAC just doesn't like third-party software in general. Seeing as that's exactly how most cheating software operates. So under certain unlucky circumstances it could easily be mistaken for a harmful program.

Permalink

they can whitelist it obviously

we've got third party software like afterburner & fraps that inject themselves into the gfx driver calls like a wall or contrast hack might

Comment has been collapsed.

Indeed they can. I just doubt that they'd want to with a program that basically bypasses how the card system is supposed to work. They tolerate people using it, but they definitely wouldn't encourage it. Also, as long as it isn't extremely popular like Fraps, you always run a risk on a VAC server, so it's better just to turn everything off.

heh, multiple games would be a ridiculous reason to ban anyone, people run multiple games for years when there are MMOs people idle in for example, or the current halloween events, every single year people idle in tf2, they could be afk or in another game

so it's all up to how idlemaster works, if it simply calls steam as a game launch or not

i've never installed it & not sure if it's even open source, i'm fine with the spacewar technique

Well, VAC mostly operates (ELI5 version) by looking if you have cheat.exe running. There's no guarantee they won't add idlemaster.exe for some weird reason.

I've idled my entire 2000+ game library with it, sold the cards for close to $300, bought a Steam Controller solely on card money, no problems so far :)

The only suggestion I would make is to only run it while you're not playing anything (while you're at work, sleeping, etc.). Turn it off when you start to actually play a game.

I idled every day for 3 months straight to get all my cards, so it takes a while if you have a lot of games, but you can't complain about free money!

Totally safe. Didn't want to start using it but started to because my internet connection is usually crap and can't download games like a normal person and with idle master I can get the cards I need faster.

Does it still work? I thought they patched it and it didn't work? Don't you have to play the game over 1 hour now to start getting cards?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's over 2 hours for each game, but IM allows you to idle multiple games simultaneously up to 2 hours, then individually. Also, the two hour thing is not aimed at idlemaster but its because of the refund policy.

Just recently (in the last week) i've been getting cards drop in less than 2 hours. One was with 30mins playtime. Checked forums and no mention of any change to policy. I don't use idlemaster.

That's interesting, however I mainly idle games for cards nowadays (a lot of games on my backlog that I never intend to play), so yeah. :D

It's because Valve changed their card drop algorithm so games not purchased on Steam can drop cards faster. It ended up affecting all games. They surely will fix it soon, if they haven't already.

Permalink

I was doing some reading about this the other day, and it seems like the card drop timer is now based (at least partially) on how many times you've refunded a game on Steam. People with no refunds get cards faster than those with several refunds.

Keep in mind, this isn't my information -- it's just what I've read around the forums here, Steam, and reddit.

it's open source, so anyone can go and check the code and see if it's safe or a scam, and compile it themselves if they feel that would be even safer, though if using the exact same compilation method the resulting exe should be exactly the same, thus one could in theory also check it that way if they're concerned enough

then as ppl have said already, don't use it with VAC games

I've used it for months, and hundreds of games, no VAC issues, and it won't steal your account info if that's your concern.

I've been using it even when DOTA 2 is running. No issue.

It's very unlikely to get you banned, and for a good reason - everyone benefits from it - users, developers and Valve.

i would think if anything steam would like it at this point as it makes all your games look like you have run them for over 2 hours and you can then no longer ask for a refund for those games.

And it encourages people to get and sell cards, resulting in extra revenue for Valve.
