Quick question, does it also count as tasting, if I downed the entire bottle?

i try to take about 5 or 6 hours every weekend to play new games. could be anything from 11 new games that are all pure garbage to one game i end up playing all the way through.

What game did you play?
Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic
What did you think about it?
It's a very old game, with very old mechanics. It is regarded as a masterpiece, but requires a lot of time getting use to the interface and brutal gameplay. I've died 5 times in my short gameplay
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I've played it 22 minutes, so I've past the time :). I don't know if I will play it a lot more. Maybe with a walkthrough
Comment has been collapsed.
I remember playing Wasteland way back in the day when I was playing similarly brutal games like Realms of Arcania, Bane of the Cosmic Forge, and the AD&D gold box games.
It's worth playing all the way through if you can deal with the interface and the older graphics don't bother you. I would recommend a walkthrough.

Of course, I picked it up the first time I saw it on a store shelf. I remember ordering the strategy guide, and having to replay the ending of Bane because if your equipment was too 1337 it didn't carry over, so I had to farm not quite as good gear that would actually transfer to Crusaders. Then having to import....over and over, and over.....and over a few more times until the skills they "didn't forget" were the ones I wanted.

What game did you play?
Majesty Gold HD
What did you think about it?
It's an indirect management fantasy strategy game. I'm used to give direct orders to my troops and buildings, like in classic RTSs, but this game is very different. Couldn't get the gist of it.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Maybe, I really liked the graphics and atmosphere.

What game did you play?
LUNA
What did you think about it?
It's a gorgeous and very simple puzzle-point and interact, story driven game. Like those old pop up books, but in computer form.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yes, it's very short. I'll probably finish it soon.

What game did you play?
Shuyan Saga
What did you think about it?
This is a great game which has good story along with a great soundtrack which help the story develop and put you into the setting that is being displayed, along with the great characters and the fighting sequences which compliment the story in great ways.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I'm definitely going to complete this game whenever i have the chance as it has really passed my expectations as a game and as a story.

First, great idea. I really have a problem with the concept of "forcing" people to play games, as games are supposed to be played for their intrinsic fun and not because you're getting peer-pressured to spend whatever time it takes to finish them. But trying them for 10 minutes, well that's time most people could "steal" off Facebook or Youtube or [insert random Big Tech company]
So, I gave a shot at Firewatch
What did you think about it?
It starts quite weirdly, with a very fast-paced interactive story (probably not that interactive, as choices are mostly about small things and I assume the short story always ends with the character taking a job at the firewatch tower ^^) narrating the character's relationship with his wife. It's all the more weird since it's regularly interrupted by very short "walking simulator" sequences.
Then the "real" game starts, in the firewatch tower and with an errand to do. I'm not sure how to call the graphics. They're not cartoonish but not realistic either. Anyway they look good and great a nice atmosphere. It feels a bit slow though, even when running (plus run is a toggle, but whenever you draw your map or compass and put it back in your pocket, you're back to walking again :/). Also the way the map and compass work is immersive, as you hold them in your hand, but it's much less comfortable than the usual, separate map screen: I even have troubles reading my orientation from the compass.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Technically I'm at 38 minutes (although I probably wasted a good ten due to IRL interruption, and some more tweaking the settings). I had to at least finish the intro interactive story in order to get a bit of the core gameplay...
Anyway, yeah I'll probably continue at least a bit, there's a story (actually an achievement) about getting bitten by some kind of beaver or raccoon and I'm curious about that :D

What game did you play?
Hacknet
What did you think about it?
It's interesting. This is game about hacker which you have to constantly write different commands to the console. It sounds very boring but it's a very exciting process.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yes, I will definitely play Hacknet.

Old SG win (2 years ago!) that has never been touched. a nice fun and light "take" on XCOM, very detailed and fully translated, with a nice artstyle... really seems well crafted.
a kinda demanding game, for me. surely deserves more time but honestly unsure if and when i'll play it more.
very noice idea, the rute! this could be something like a PALE... Playing Appreciated Light Edition :D (i think DingDong is right about having to play a game and just play it, taste it if and when you feel to...)
each one of us has different approach at gaming (or at collectin' :D) and this one best suit me.
gonna taste more. thanks for keep on sharing, ideas and gibs!

What game did you play?
Perfect Fit - Totemland
What did you think about it?
A Tetris like game where you have to fit different shapes together at the middle field. I played the first 50 of over 300 levels. Till now it was quite easy so hopefully the difficulty level will rise. It's a fun game if you don't have much time and just want to play something casual.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I will definitely try to complete it now that I started it ;)

Courtesy of The Great Icaio, I actually tried out this too! Finished 100 levels in ~30 minutes. Very calm, very casual -- good game to play while listening to music, audiobooks, or podcasts. It's a bit on the simple side, but I also think that makes it great for younger audiences.
Only change I'd make is being able to rotate the pieces myself rather than having them be time-based, but other than that it's quite enjoyable.

What game did you play?
Roombo: First Blood
What did you think about it?
It's different, I don't really have something to compare it to, but it's about using traps and cleaning the mess made by the intruders.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I want to see if I can get all achievements, so I'm aiming to complete the game probably soon :)

I don't think 10 minutes is enough for some games. The Witness started off fine, introducing its core mechanic and slowly building on it in a way that made sense; it wasn't until around 30-40 minutes in that it started adding arbitrary mechanics and I realized it wouldn't be the kind of "puzzle" game I'd enjoy. At 10 minutes in, I wanted to keep playing, but it didn't take much longer for me to change my mind.
Comment has been collapsed.
This is pretty exactly my experience with it, and it's vindicating to hear that I wasn't alone. It did nothing to explain how any of the puzzles worked, which was fine for the simpler ones, because they were easy to figure out, but once they started getting more complex, it was like moon logic wasn't enough; you needed to master Pluto logic.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, the goal is just to get a taste, and your taste of The Witness after the first 10 minutes was positive! It doesn't mean that will hold for the entire playthrough, especially not with a game like that (it took me 20+ hours to beat the game, and those hours ended up being very different than the first 10 minutes).
Comment has been collapsed.
the goal is just to get a taste
My point is that many games don't really get started until well after 10 minutes. It's like asking people to try a cake, and all they do is pick off a blueberry from the top; it's technically what you're asking, but they're not really getting a taste of what it'll be like.
Comment has been collapsed.
more than a blueberry i think it's about a tiny piece of cake. sometimes is not enough, and you also might get the wrong "taste" of the entire cake. it also works, tho. think about all those have enjoyed fully playing The Witness...
that said, "taste" of The Witness was actually wrong... i 100% agree with you! (tried multiple times, and no luck)

What game did you play?
TACOMA
What did you think about it?
I didn't know much about this game but I liked the look of the images I've seen.
The game's visuals are great, it's not photo realistic but that's for the better, it serves a purpose and nails that. The audio is crisp and well done. The setting especially is what intrigued me and so far it's what I expected and that's a good thing, seems like a more small scale, non-combat Prey so far without the need for any type of enemies (well, so far)
It's definitely the type of game where you look around and do puzzles or find items to investigate some incident.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I really like the setting and love science fiction that puts you in a world where you can just look around and admire the surroundings and one important thing is that it's not too long, I'm really enjoying condensed, short and artistic games.

I really enjoyed TACOMA. Glad to see your tasting of it went well!
Regarding your comment about enjoying condensed, short, artistic games, I read an article about one of the developers from The Chinese Room (Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture) where he talks about what he calls "evening-sized games" that are smaller, more focused experiences that can be completed in roughly two to four hours. I really liked that distinction, especially because those are the types of games I tend to enjoy the most.

Broken Age
What did you think about it?
I don't usually play point and click games but this looks good. The story seems fun and enjoyable.

Yeah I am planning to finish it. I wonder how it ends.
Thanks for doing this by the way. Great idea!

Game Played: 100% Orange Juice
Thoughts: I went into this game only knowing it was kinda board game like and was completely lost through the story about fishing, then the fishing didn't happen. And there was stars, and dice rolling and defending and evading and I didn't know what the different colour block did to you and I got up the the 10th round out of sheer luck.
Honestly, I don't know if I'm dumb and didn't see the tutorial or whatever, but that game chewed my ass up.
It's cute and it's a board game and I like both aspects, it's just I'm so confused.
Continue?: Yeah probably, not right now as I've got other stuff to do for other things I trial play for different projects, but I'd definately come back to it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, the fishing thing is an event going on in the game right now. They have those regularly and usually come with a mini-story of sorts (you saw the intro to it). It'll be gone in a week. Kinda feels like an oversight that a completely new player would see it off the bat if you ask me. :X
There is a large button in the main menu (before going into a game) that says "Guide" and explains the base mechanics of the game. (Next to it there's also a button linking to the game's Wiki).
But, yeah, the game is very RNG and can end up chewing your ass even after reading that. :D

Been trying to play and finish games people have given me (thru SG or IRL), and started another one a day or so ago.
What game did you play?
The Magic Circle.
What did you think about it?
It's different, but not endearing so far. The story is about an unfinished video game, and the action takes place inside said game, so it perpetually has an unfinished feel. I'm fine with the concept, but the execution is not fun so far.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yes. It is a game I won on SteamGifts, and I also want to keep my achievement completion rate up.

What game did you play?
I played a bit with HLTB randomizer, and it picked to me Evergarden
What did you think about it?
Looks like cute little game, I wouldn't be suprised if it is mobile game, because it feels like one. A level is containing X turns and in every turn you can plant seeds and combine plants. you can combine plants that are next to each other, and two level 1 plants give you one level 2 plant. Plants are giving you points and the base idea is to collect as many points as you can, and also make particular patterns of flowers.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I think I give it an hour or two, and we will see what will happen.

What game did you play?
Velvet Assassin
What did you think about it?
This was the first game I bought from the defuncted Tremorgames. Never installed it and played it before, so I loved the excuse to try it. Seems fine. So far, it is mostly stealth game, were you embodies a female assassin during WWII, Graphics are still pretty good for a 2009 game. It's fun, albeit I think it will have a lot of trying and error gameplay
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I don't know. I'm not really a fan of steath sections and this game is mostly focused on that.

What did you think about it?
Super cool cyberpunk Fallout-inspired beat-em up game. Amazing art work. Difficult, but rewarding brawler mechanics. Upgrades that I choose felt meaningful, and even with just a short 2 hour session I could tell there was a lot of replay value.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
Yes, I'm totally sucked in

this time I was drinking wine while playing. That was the idea?
What did you think about it?
I really like point and click adventures. This seems really nice. Not a fan of 3D changing enviroments thou. Pretty nice setup, with a murder mystery and a young detective agent.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I think I will return to it.

What game did you play?
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?!
What did you think about it?
You start out with a small blacksmith shop and you manage your smiths to craft and sell weapons for heroes. The tutorial is probably longer than 10 minutes, which is why I played 28 minutes. I'm not entirely sure yet if the gameplay is gonna stay this simple or if it's gonna get more complex. But it seems like a very cute game with a bit of humor. I can already tell that there are a bunch of pop culture references. Also, everyone is a potato in this universe.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I'll probably play it a little more at least. If the gameplay turns out to become repetative, I will probably end it. Also, I'm going on vacation next weeks, so I don't know if I will still want to play it afterwards.

What game did you play?
Perfect Fit - Totemland, which I won from a GA in this thread ^^
What did you think about it?
It's a puzzle game where you must fit pieces together to fill a central grid. So far it's easy, but I find the moving pieces a bit frustrating as you can screw up simply by clicking with an unfortunately timed click.
I wonder if the puzzles will get much bigger (the biggest I got was a 4x4 grid I think?), but anyway from the way they work (you need to combine 4 areas: top, right, bottom, left), I guess they'll remain simple enough no matter how big the grid gets.
Do you plan on continuing it past 10 minutes (either now or in the future)?
I completed 37 levels and it's getting quite repetitive, but I think I'll still play it now and then for short periods of time (10-15 minutes at a time sounds a nice amount to have some fun without entering the "it's getting boring" zone). From the achievements, it seems there are 310 levels.

UPDATE
I'm officially retiring this thread, as I don't spend nearly as much time on Steamgifts as I used to. Thank you to all who contributed! If anyone else is willing to take charge and start up a new version of this thread, feel free!
I'm assuming many of us have a good amount of unplayed games in our Steam library. Asking people to commit to completing them is a tall order, but just trying them out?
Welcome to...
The Game Tasting
How it works: Play an unplayed game from your backlog for 10 minutes -- just 10! A quick taste. Then, come back here and answer three simple questions about your tasting:
What I'll do: Because I want to hear about various games and get people to play things, I'll incentivize this thread by adding a new giveaway for every five tastings that get completed. All giveaways will be level 2. I've already given one to get the ball rolling, and it's perfectly fine for one person to submit multiple tastings.
