Is this a good idea?
I'm sure some Mods on Nexus will simply "move" to Steam, while this might set a weird new trend towards "fanmade DLC"
some might be even as good as those made by the game-devs themselves - maybe its them feeding you content through
a new less "criticized" ("fan-made") DLC-STRAW lol - have fun checking ...
Avoiding DLC altogether in general should be the way to go ...

terrible idea, or better an understandable idea that goes wrong. Here what I think about it, there could be a "donate" button, but hell no "buy", lol.

My wild guess would be: It's 1€, because majority of this money will go to dev+steam+tax. Creator would actually see 20 to 30 cents? That's why I think it's a bad idea. Better to just donate money DIRECTLY to mod creator if you find the mod deserving it. Don't feed corporations.

yeah, good idea but i doubt it'll happen. i'm pretty sure valve dictates some kind of an agreement to modders and will ban the ones who mention direct donations.

Best thing?
Try any mod, Risk Free
When shopping for anything, it's still important to spend a little time learning about any product you are about to purchase. But, if after purchase you find that a mod is broken or doesn’t work as promised, you can easily get a refund of that mod within 24 hours of your purchase. View the full refund policy here.
I won't still use thought.

Valve may restrict an individual user's eligibility for future refunds if there are indications of an abuse of the refund system. In this case, the restriction will be clearly communicated to the user and only apply to later purchases.
Translation:
Try to request a refund, just try, I dare you bro

At first i was like "cool, people can chose to support modders" then i saw they can add stuff strictly as Paid Content, to which my reaction was "fuck off". Also it's retarded, why is there no third option, why not Publish as Free Content with a Donation button???
Comment has been collapsed.
why not? make it PWYW and set a percentage for valve. donation =/= paypal donation
Comment has been collapsed.
i'm not saying they should enforce this to every mod. but it would be better than fixed prices.

Donations would be much less risky to Valve. This is frankly a retarded move on Valve's part as it now means if you find a modder sells copyrighted content (for example sells a Dark Souls skin in Skyrim) it opens Valve up to being sued bigtime. This sounds like it's all going to end in tears.

I doubt that anyone can sue Valve. Their rules clearly state that modders have to make sure they don't violate third party copyrights. They also offer the option for copyright owners to take down content that violates copyrights. So basically they've done their part and passed all the responsibilty to the modders.

I don't think the games will disappear over this .. just the one or the other mod. They made their terms under which people can earn money from their mods (while keeping the major part of the money between themselves and Bethesda) very clear: the person who submits a mod is responsible for not violating any third party copyrights. Valve offers a option for complaint for copyright holders in case someone doesn't play by the rules. Now that of course leaves two problems: first how would an original author even learn about that their work was stolen if they'd have to BUY the mod first if they suspect stolen content. What happens to the buyers of the mod when that happens? Will they get a refund or can they just keep the mod with the stolen content, even though nobody else can buy it anymore? In all of this Valve stays clearly out of trouble. They probably still keep their 75% share. So yes, you're right, the game is rigged.

let's be honest. they work hard to make those mods. and they deserve nothing in return? i'm glad to see those folks are supported for their work now. besides i'm sure most of the modders who want to make mods just for fun and to make community happy will continue their work free. or maybe they won't. ohh... fuck.

You got a point, mods are suposed to expand the lifespan of the game, Skyrim being the prime example.
If i now need to paid for getting a new folower/outfir/weapon/quest, i see it as a DLC and NOT a mod.
I don't mind supporting the creator, but like this? No thanks.

The hardworking modders do the work out of love for the game they're modding and because they like making others happy.I doubt many of them would force people to pay for content to have access to it. If Valve actually cared about their hard work they'd have made this a Donation feature, not third party paid content from which they take a cut.

lol yeah, why would they ... just as you wrote yourself > good labor
deserves an appropriate return of favor (money's still the best "favor")
only thing is:

the only thing i understand from what you wrote is there won't be good free mods anymore. it would be good if you could write more reader-friendly.
Comment has been collapsed.
yeah sry. i tend to rewrite things a lot and forget to complete/fix them lol ... when not paying enough attention
and yes thats about what i meant, why would a good/great mod be offered for free, when it clearly would deserve monies
Comment has been collapsed.
because good modders are not greedy? at least i hope so. but on the other hand they also deserve to be paid. it's kinda complicated. at least for me.
Comment has been collapsed.
if you say so. always take a cat's words on mods. ALWAYS.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I think that it is fair to pay about 3-5 euro for a huge mod with a lot of ORIGINAL content (not star wars / lotr TW)... but 1euro for one sword skin copied from DotA is just rude.
PS: From my point of view, they should keep mods free and add an option to donate money to the mod developer if you like the content.

Well, let's see what comes out of it. First thought is no for me, even tho I hardly use ever any mods, but suddenly paying for something that was always free, nah. It's not the fact that there is an option to do so, it's they possible way that it setf off for the future is what unnerving people, and for good reason imo. Let's see how it turns out.

I suddenly have a bad feeing about future Dot 2 custom game modes :(

Not a question of if it will happen but when. Someone is going to post something stupid like from EA or worse, Games Workshop and the lawyers will come!

And sometimes it's actually a good thing

is this PWYW for you? and does it start from €0.92/€1 (or maybe he meant $1?) like madjoki said? if so, there is regional pricing for mods too. i guess it's not surprising though.

XD delicious ... love how quickly its degenerating already

Modding has always been free. Authors get the satisfaction of people downloading and use them. It's nice for them to get money but Workshop has always been for me a source of completely free mods and this kinda kills it. Expect most of the decent mods beign paid something like dlcs.

I kind of like the idea of supporting the modders, and them only.
The thing is Valve probably takes away a certain percentage of income though, which is not ok, since they are just leeching/sharking on the contributors basicly. They are trying to monetize everything these days and act quite greedy lately.

If that happens you can bet that Bethesda will be 6 feet under in the blink of an eye.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah... no. In some games, especially in Skyrim, you don't necessarily know that the mod broke your game for some time. Then, one day you just enter some cave that has some code that the mod doesn't like and it breaks. 24 hours might be long gone by then.
Comment has been collapsed.
24 hour return policies are worse than no refund at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
Because 9 times out of 10 the problems never come up until after that 24 hours at which point they just say too bad the 24 hour refund time is over. 24 hour refund policies are pretty much just a fuck you, and are used as a way of saying "at least we have a return policy".

UPDATE:
One mod has allready been taken down with DMCA claims, as the author did not have permision to use the assets.
Guess Valve has some re-thinking to do.
