Is this a good idea?
And I thought the Steam Workshop was a very convenient way of getting mods..

I think its a bad idea. It was more good if they made a donation system for the people who make mods. I mean if i like a mod , i have a button to donate "x" money to that person.

Well. I just hope they don't add this to too many games, don't own Skyrim on PC and now it looks like I might never buy it. Don't know how many of the good mods will remain free.

i think the idea behind this is to encourage developers to make their games modding friendly, because you know now theres a great reson to do it rather that just be good guys, if thats the case im all for it.

As a modder for a game (NHL 2004 Rebuilt) i am disgusted by this because you do mods because you love the game. You want to preserve the game and make it more enjoyable to people who just want to try it out. I have spent count less hours modding. I spent 2 months working on the same part of one mod and it was grueling. Why did i do it? I love the community. I dont want your money. I want you to enjoy the mod.

How the hell does this even work?
1.buy mod
2.rip files out of .vpk
3.paste files into my own custom directory
4.refund mod
To make things worse most mods use scripts from other mods or various libraries, and the whole things rips from game assets, which means that there's plenty of takedown requests to go around.
Also, 75%? What the hell, Valve.
And if the mod breaks with a game patch in a week then you can't get a refund, and the modder has no obligation to fix it at all because they already have your money. Early access mods are already a thing.
Just wait until intentionally broken games are released on day 1, with paid patches as DLC.

people are going to be selling mods other people made, then we will have to turn to valve support and we all know that's shit

another thing to note is your not getting real money out of it just steam wallet

Actually that is not true. They will get real money out of it, not Steam wallet credit.

In theory, yes. But as history has repeat itself so many times surly it will again.
Good modelers got some money from donations, and bad nothing. But now good one will only get 25% of asking price, which will probably be much less then from donations. While bad will also get some which is more then nothing from before, and they will now keep making more and more broken staff.
In the end good modelers will get less money, while rest of money will go to Valve and other not so worthy.

Bought a mod, asked for a refund. Now I will have to wait 3 days for the credit to arrive back at my Steam Wallet.

UPDATE:
One mod has allready been taken down with DMCA claims, as the author did not have permision to use the assets.
Guess Valve has some re-thinking to do.

This will kill modding in the long run. More and more paid mods will emerge, then suddenly editors and modding tools become not free or paid DLCs, and only 'professional' modders remain and only these 3rd party DLCs to choose from.

Dumb.
I can only imagine Gabe got this idea when he heard about what Unreal Tournament was doing, which I'm also a bit skeptical about. It's like, most official DLC isn't worth paying for anyway, why would some dinky armor be worth plopping down $5 for.
Now modding will be less something of a fan passion and more something you do if you want to make a quick buck. I can't wait to see how they try and implement DRM in mods next. Or how they'll handle all the incompatibilities with other mods.
