I got an e-mail a couple hours ago from a published promoting a game on Greenlight.
I'm pretty sure I didn't subscribe to their mailing list, so I checked my wins and... voilá! I won a featured game from them a month ago.

I read the FAQ/guidelines and apparently there is nothing against that but I think winners' e-mails should only be used to send the gift.

Did it happen to you? What do you think about it?

I'm not giving names yet for now to avoid calling out...

Downside of the site giving out email addresses to giveaway creators as a backup option. On the other hand without it it'd be impossible to resolve issues if one party has to constantly look for the other because no key was sent or the stuff wasn't marked as activated.
I'd be surprised if that would be the only indie company that uses this method for mailing lists though. It just begs for spam.

Wouldn't surprise me even though it's kind of a shitty move. On those cases I just end up unsubscribing with the option "i haven't subscribed" (most serious mailing list providers have it) and reporting it as spam. If enough people do it, serious providers end up blocking the whole list.

I was actually wary of this, but more considering fake GAs, so that the creator might troll you even more by subscribing you to some spam site or trying to get referrals or w/e. Anyways, that's a bad and unprofessional move of the respective dev (looking at your win page I think I saw a GA of a certain notorious dev, whose job is to fill steam with shovelware/asset flips) and they shouldn't be able to make any more featured GAs on SG.

That's a shitty thing to do and I believe there should be a rule for this. A good way to be protected from this kind of situations is setting up a different e-mail just for this site (or other giveaway sites) which reveal your e-mail, to avoid the spam

That's how I 'caught' them, I use an e-mail only for this site and they sent me the e-mail there.

Ohh, I'm sorry Mr. Investigator :D
Jokes aside it's a really dick move to do but there is no way to not get your e-mail exposed so we need to live with that.
On sidenote I too get some strange e-mail (in polish language if I am not mistaken) on my e-mail that I use for this kind of sites so you are not alone :D

A shitty thing to do and illegal in many countries.
I hope they encounter someone on this site who has too much money and time on their hands. :P

The best way you can check for this in the future, is to use addendums to alter your email on a site by site basis. For example.

"Deiru+steamgifts@gmail.com" would redirect to "Deiru@gmail.com", but any email directed to it would display as "To deiru+steamgifts@gmail.com".

And just before anybody tries it, that's not my email. I don't use gmail :P

I'm not really worried about this, although I could see why others might be.

I've had the exact same email address for a very long time. I made it in '97, so by this point, I've already ended up on every spam list known to man, woman and Marine.

Yea, I made giveaway of 6K copies of "Voxelized" and now I signed up for p0rn services with every email address, haha!

No, I didn't, but some d!ckhead devs might do that. Shame on them :/

I'd happily thumbs up their shitty projects if they'd just give me the games for free. Don't see why we need 10,000 50 copy giveaways of Overture and Rush Delta Z every day if they'll just spam the winners.

because that is what devs are paying them to do, they spam the fuck out of twitter and steamgifts (sorry I mean promote) to people vote yes on the game. so they get a publishers cut off of the game getting on steam

I think I'm just salty because I've entered hundreds of those Rush Delta and Overture giveaways (it's part of my morning routine) and still haven't won them.

To be honest, I don't even mind. All these emails go to my Spam folder. I just check the titles of the emails in my Spam and the delete them all with 2 clicks.

Developers sometimes make the mistake thinking that people who won their game entered because they have some interest in it, and might actually install it and may even be interested in learning more about other games from that dev.

Poor deluded devs.

If you think that's the case, send a ticket with the suspected dev so that we can ask cg what he thinks about it.

I can say that we have never used the emails given by SG for any kinds of lists! Although I will use them to email the person if they have not accepted their gift after a couple of weeks, but it stops at that.

Could be a coincidence. I started getting a lot more of certain kinds of junk mail once I hit a certain age.

  • Refinance your house!
  • You need more Life Insurance!
  • We can solve your Erectile Dysfunction problems!
  • Get rid of that bald spot!
  • Feel young again with hormonal-replacement therapy!

One would almost think they were trying to tell me something....
