we wouldn't want newcomers to discover nfs games from more than a decade ago are still better than what we are trying to sell for 70€, would we?

Jokes aside, its very unlikely
that might have worked for hot pursuit because the mod content was very limited, its an arcade game, its very modern, simple, gamer friendly.
But when you see the work the modding community as put into some of the most beloved titles in the franshise, most wanted, carbon, even resolving balancing issues in games like pro street.
This is a level of effort that EA cant compete against, thus i doubt they would sell as much as Hot Pursuit has

I think you underestimate the size of the casual NFS crowd that doesn’t care about mods. People would buy that shit up for sure.

I'm still fucking pissed about Burnout: Paradise. God damn shame.

Would buy them last sale if they put a warning or something :/

Totally agree. People can choose to buy them or not. But there is always a target audience that will. Each with their own.
If we were to be bothered by things we dislike, I'd say steam can not absolutely sell rpg games or multiplayer only. Just because they are not my thing it doesn't mean others shouldn't be able to purchase and enjoy them. I don't understand why others hate on games they don't like. I don't even think twice about the ones I'm not interested in. Much less think they shouldn't be sold on steam or go to the community page spread hate. Such waste of time and a petty attitude.

Phahahaha! I wouldn't be surprised if it was like this.

Well, ain't this the pinnacle of stupid! However, there might be truth to what NB264 says above, for I see no reason why they wouldn't just kill the multiplayer while still earning from the sales of games which can easily be played in single-player mode.

My money are on expired licenses. Back when the old NFS were made, the licensing was affordable. In our times, that went through the roof.
When you use licensed content, there are a fragton of problems due to how the idiotic, archaic copyright laws are working.
Many of the companies represented in the older NFS titles went down (especially the tuning ones). The car manufacturers are also not very eager to renew licenses for old cars, unless they are truly iconic models. And even then, the licensing is through the roof.
Remember the music in the old NFS titles? That also had an expiring date. In our days, the game soundtracks are completely crap because of the costs of licensing a rather appealing OST. Most companies prefer to hire a composer, make the recording and buy the end result to ensure that the music stays
It's not only about the servers. That's the least of the problems.Everything revolves around the copyright. As long as the copyright laws are not modernized, to reflect the current realities, things like this will continue to happen.
P.S.: remember R.U.S.E.?! That game went down because their license to use the Jeep name and WWII vehicles expired. And they couldn't renew it. That's the wonderful world of licensed content.

i never knew why r.u.s.e. desappeared from the stores, thanks for the tidbit.

true.
The early NFS games had tracks by electronic producers who were cheap at the time, but in a whole different price category these days.
Musicians like Chemical Brothers, Above & Beyond, BT, Junkie XL, and more, they're now in a whole different league

The Run is a game you can complete within two hours and refund it on Origin. The PC port (especially the Steam version) of Undercover is absolute more or less unplayable piece of garbage. Carbon was never even available digitally.
Of course they say it at the end of the sale.

EA totally screwed this up. There appears to have been a sale planned right now but none of the ones needed here are.

EArlier during April and May they did the same for older sports titles (FIFA, Madden & NHL) up to 2018 versions of each of those series.

I will never forget the time when they did the same with NFS World. Pulled the plug while the game was having quite some traffic on it and didn't even let us play single player.
I doubt most players will stick to their word to boycott EA. I did the last mistake when I bought Need for Speed (2015) hoping I would get an experience similar to NFS World. I didn't and hated most of its "features" like the 5 slot garage with a 10(?) slot warehouse.
At least Microsoft lets you play most of their games offline when they take them down, like they did with Forza Horizon 3 last year, to boost Forza Horizon 4 sales.
EA won't take a dime from me ever again. At least not for a NFS title. Forza series has been keeping me happy for the last 3 years. And if I need some NFS action, I replay NFSU 2 and Most Wanted 2005 using my physical copies.

I couldn't agree more. I had similar thoughts when I read their anouncement...

I read it as NES and first thing I thought is that Nintendo striked NES roms and emulators once again.

Hello there!
Today, we have some news to share about some of the older Need for Speed titles:
Starting May 31st 2021, Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed and Need for Speed The Run will be removed from digital storefronts and you will no longer be able to purchase them. In-game stores will also be closed from May 31st. This is in preparation for the retirement of the online services for these titles which will happen on August 31st 2021. Until that date, you will be able to play and race your friends (and rivals) online. From September 1st 2021 onwards, you can still play the games and use the respective offline features of these titles.
Decisions to retire games are never made easy, but we are now shifting gears to focus on the future of Need for Speed. The development teams and operational staff have put a lot of time and passion into the development, creation, release and upkeep of the game over the years, and we love to see you play. But the number of players has come to a point where it's no longer feasible to continue the work behind the scenes required to keep Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed and Need for Speed The Run up and running. We hope you have gotten many victories, satisfying drifts, moments of friendly rivalry, and hours of joy over the last few years out of these games. And we hope you'll keep driving with us in one of our newer titles - Need for Speed Most Wanted (2012), Need for Speed Rivals, Need for Speed (2015), Need for Speed Payback, Need for Speed Heat and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered - many of which are available via our EA Play subscription. Pedal to the metal.
