Below are the changes that will take place on March 9th. If you are already protected by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator (or if you add the security feature to your account today), the first two points below will not impact you:

Trade hold duration will be increased to 15 days (for long-time Steam friends the duration will remain 1 day)

Listing on the Steam Community Market will have a hold of 15 days before an item can be sold

Steam Support will no longer restore items that have left accounts following a successful trade or market transaction (a process that previously created duplicates of original items)

Well shit this is ridiculous. I have to enter the steam guard code every time I enter Steam in a device, no matter if I entered yesterday on the same device so they keep my cards for 72 hours which is more than enough. Now they want to do that but with 15 days? Well shit it may protect accounts but for traders this is stupid.

Actually, I wouldn't put it past Valve to be both ageist and sexist (and whatever-you-call-discriminating-against-those-with-medical-conditionsist)...

Valve doing the worst things ever since the last years. Before it was like heaven, now it´s like hell. Noob devs make that possible, and robot support is inadmissible. Steam do correct things and change that WORST support ever before doing that NOOB things (you can change noob for any other bad word but i prefer to say noob to not be warned or etc etc :P)

I don't know about a lot of the things you just said, but steam definitely was heaven years ago. The service keeps stepping down and getting worse and worse and worse. With a constant increase of bad decisions, it's pretty amazing how steam and valve is constantly making bad decisions with their own games and DRM. As one other user put it, Steam's deconstructing is own monopoly. This is rather humorous and amazing.

I wanted to make a long post about this nonsense but honestly... What can we do?

Besides anything else I think that valve shows how small they are by forcing people to use their app but not relasing it on Windows Phone. Because of what? Microsoft Store? They are really pathetic. If some games wouldn't force me to use steam I would leave it long time ago. Now it's too late anyway.

And you know what? We have only ourselfs to blame. With so many fanboys, and people hooked to steam (lets be honest, I won't leave steam because I want to have access to my games) valve is so powerfull that they can force anything on their users and suffer no consequences.

aye. No longer will I be able to turn a profit now. It's just not going to happen. I honestly, see absolutely no reason for them to mess with the market. It was perfectly fine, and now they're just destroying it in one fell swoop. The bad decisions valve has been making for awhile now is simply appalling.

Hope it's OK to bump this one...

I've just set up the whole thing with WinAuth. Can I safely remove the phone number I've used from my Steam account?

It's your last resort to recover your account. There's no reason to remove it. Steam won't do anything.

I'm not actually using a phone, had to borrow one to complete the process - that's why I'm asking.

wth.

There's a way, though. Buy a new SIM Card for your own use, and attach your Steam account to that new number using borrowed phone. That'd do.

Comment has been collapsed.

Nah, not buying anything, I only set up the mobile authenticator to bypass the sell hold on cards, so I'm asking whether that will still work after the phone number is removed.

wth.

I've had at least a SIM to my name since, about, 1998?

Then the network operators thought that customers like me, who use their phones for emergencies mostly, did not have a high enough ARPU, while idling all day on their precious networks. They tried luring us into spending more money with services we didn't need, and that predictably didn't work, so they had this brilliant new idea:

What if we force them to pay? they gave us an ultimatum: either have our contracts terminated, or switch to a monthly subscription. For me this equated to a 20x increase in my yearly spending, in exchange for something I have no use for.

I'm not exactly made of money, so now my phone is used mainly as a music player.

I set up the Desktop Authenticator a kind soul linked to me, because effectively this new "idea" destroys all the fun in selling cards elsehow... I mean, c'mon Valve, 15 days????
This in turn means I can now only log in to my Steam account at home and nowhere else, as this shitty thing requires some code EVERYTIME I log in to Steam. They can't be serious about that, can't they?? I couldn't even find any option to configure the level of "security" somewhere. This sucks so so so so so so bad.
I begin to hate having so many games on Steam.

I agree, I'll be setting it up later today or tomorrow and I dread the idea of entering a code every time I log in.
Any extra hassle is still a hassle imho.

And to those who will say "it's not that much extra work" -- read what I said again. ANY extra hassle.
Give us the option to disable this crap and forfeit our items, Valve. I'll take it ....

I used to use my Steam account not only at home, I log in at work to use Group Buys, I log in at my friend's place to have access to SG, I log in when visiting my family for the same reasons - this all died just two days ago. It is a major handicap in my life, not only an additional hassle for me. I am now doomed to "read only" when I'm not at home. I hate that. I hate it so much I'd like to slap some people over at Valve in their faces and make them think twice about this crap.

Desktop Authenticator is portable, and you can set a password on it. I have it on all my workplace PCs so I can log in to Steam, all downloaded from my OneDrive where I keep a compressed copy of it.
But yes, you need to supply the code at every login on every new platform, and you also have to log in another time if you buy something from the store or top up the wallet. I don't know if you need to give a code if you buy/sell something over 3.00 USD on the market.
Oh, and you'll have to manually confirm all trade transactions where you send something, even a coupon, in the authenticator. Luckily, SDA has a conform feature where it automatically pops up a small window next to the notification area after you accept the transaction.

Hm, that sounds like something really helpful, if only I would understand it fully. Please allow some questions:
Is OneDrive an online storage system like DropBox for example? If so, what means you keep a compressed copy of the SDA on it? I read it as compressing all of the files from the SDA folder I have in one zip or rar file and then simply unpacking this wherever I need it and run it?! Would this actually work without installing the thing first? I have set up a password for it, btw, and it's different from my Steam pass which is also different from my email pass (it's really getting ridiculous by now...)
These confirmations are still annoying as fuck, but at least I would be able to run Steam wherever I want.
Oh, and does it still send codes to your email with this thing?

OneDrive is Microsoft's version of Google Drive: an online cloud storage space you get for registering at them. My primary account is at MS not Google, so I use OneDrive. :) But any online cloud storage works the same, naturally, including DropBox.(I just don't like DropBox. Too small, too expensive, too restrictive, too cumbersome UI.)
And yes, I simply compressed the entire SDA folder and uploaded it on my storage. Since the program is portable, it can be stored this way. ZIP is the most convenient format to make sure it can be opened on any Windows PC.

Technically, you only need to store the "<Steam_UserID>.maFile" file online. This is found in the maFiles folder where you put SDA. It stores your user data. So if you just download SDA to a computer, you can create a maFiles directory within it and put your file in there: when you open the program, you can access your login code.
The reason I don't use this method is that I found it easier to compress the entire thing as I have more than one user data in that folder. Simple matter of small convenience, plus I already have a portable HDD I bring everywhere but work, and it has SDA on it.

First thing I did was storing that maFiles folder in my DropBox (I despise anything Google related, imo they aim to rule the world, data swallowing kraken they are), they made sure to make people aware of it's importance. I will add an additional zipped version with the whole thing.

Thank you very much, talgaby! It's still a pain in the ass, but you just gave me my freedom back ♥

No problem, I hope it'll be a little more tolerable for you now. I don't mind two-factor authentication and use it on any site that offers it, but the way Valve set it up is really a pain in the ass. I really don't know why do they keep insisting on adding new features but always slightly differently than the tested and proven methods to make them totally inconvenient (streaming, mod support, now 2FA…).

you don't need to put the code each time you login... it will only ask the code when you want to buy something from the store or after a week or so.

Well, since I set that thing up it asked me for a code every single time I logged in, even at the same computer. If you know a way to avoid that I happily follow your instructions.

I never really understood why I can't just use email verification? I mean seriously, the whole thing seems at best like a pain in the ass. I don't want to use mobile authentication. My phone is not secure. Phones in general are not secure. I don't do my banking on my smartphone. I don't work with sensitive information on my phone. Why? Because if I forget my phone somewhere, there is a very slim chance I get that phone back. Since I use an iphone it's not impossible for me to simply buy a new one and have all my data restored on that phone, but starting to go after my phone company for another sim just seems like a fucking pain in the ass that i don't want to deal with. Please hold for 90 minutes while we deal with your problem.

Let's not even begin to talk about the fact that if you have a pay as you go account, and you don't use set account for 3 months (x-amount of time) you lose your number.

Yes, well considering that I don't have to jump through these hoops to do my banking, my actual banking then Valve is losing it's mind. It punishes people who don't want to jump through hoops. I don't trade. I do use the community market. Especially around the sales time, or to sell a rare foil I get.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Here's the long and short. I don't want to use it. I don't trade with people I don't know, and I only sell steam cards. That being said, I don't want to use my phone for any sort of authentication because even the argument well people can't hack your phone. No but they can steal it. I don't want to deal with it. I certainly don't want to have this weird code that I need to use every single time I log in, unless I'm using a new device. That makes sense to me more so than this random code that sticks around for 30 seconds.

Winauth can help that case. No need for your phone.

If you still don't want then... can't help it.

If you ever lose your phone, there's a recovery code you can use. Write and store it in a safe place.

Because taking your SSN wasn't good enough, how about info on our incomes, family registry, driver's license, medical and criminal records, our pet's names, blood type, list of greatest fears and what we had for breakfast...

And then they complain about pirating... it's not just because it's free. I think going to the DMV is easier than the number of hoops you have to go through just to play something legally these days...

I don't get how having to wait 15 days to put a card in the market will make me any safer. What kind of malicious thing can anyone even do with the steam market, I don't get it.

The 3 day trade hold also discouraged my from giving coupons I wouldn't use to whoever might want to use it, but the 15 day trade hold makes giving coupons impossible. Thank you Steam for not allowing me to give coupons to people who might buy the game using that coupon, and all because I don't own a cellphone. Just great.

Also, good job on making people who are trying to find alternatives less safe then not having mobile authentication in the first place. This really seem to be making steam safer than ever.
