Thats complete bullshit and i friggin despise the Mobile Authenticator. On the bright side, ill be making more money from cards now that some users have to wait 15 days to post them on the market
I wont lie, they are being stubborn with these freakin thing and it's completely unfair to everyone who doesnt own a recent phone...and it's so pointless, i guarantee people will find a way in a couple months, with emulation or something of the like

What the fuck.
Didn't they add the 3 day thing recently?
Are they just trying to force us to use the mobile thing?
Comment has been collapsed.
It is about 4 months they added 3 day thing if I remember correctly.

From personal experience - I don't know.

So every time I want to list something on the steam market, will I have to boot up their stupid-ass app and type in the stupid-ass code? Cuz I already have to fucking do that every time I LOG IN TO MY ACCOUNT and doing it EVEN MORE would be FANTASTIC.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just so you guys know, the reason for the restriction ain't that much about account security (or the extremeness of it), but the reason that too many people are abusing the system (faking account hijack to get duplicates for their items, sometimes up to few thousand dollars worth of inventory).
So valve wants to stop people from abusing the duplicating system, but if they do so, people who genuinely got hacked would complain alot.
Thus, steam made this 'super ultra secure' system, so that they have the excuse to remove the duplicating item thing, so those who are hacked cannot blame valve and request for their items back.
Comment has been collapsed.
Which might be the reason why valve 'improved' the system, so that no more items can be duplicated (by scam/hacking)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea, but then the people, who got scammed or hacked, would argue that the system is not secure enough, so steam would have had to duplicate the items back for them still. (there are alot of people who would do/say anything to try and get their items back)
Introducing the new stuff is like some protection to cover valve's ass from those people.

If only I could waive my rights somehow, and be responsible for my own stupidity if something happened? Feels extremely Totalitarian, and I guess it is, to a large degree. I don't know why I have to be policed and baby-sat for something I don't really care about. Now even if I use authentication, which I do, and I DETEST!! I have to still wait for others not using it, which is the real kicker, so I'm still penalized either way. If I want to trade with somebody that doesn't have authentication, I should not have to pay for that...
Comment has been collapsed.
I wouldn't mind waiving this right too. But to be efficient, valve has to set a standard rule for everyone (and not different rules for particular persons). So there is nothing we can do but pay (with the trouble of mobile authenticator) for the stupidity of those who get scammed and demanded for compensation.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah... Unfortunately it is just as easy, if not more so, to get screwed over by the mobile authenticator, and there's horror stories all over the place about people having problems with their authenticators going haywire, or glitching out, not giving numbers, locking them out of their accounts permanently until Valve can fix it...
The solution? The dreaded Steam Support! Magic!
I'll just bide my time in utter amazement... wait for the next sadistic idea Valve comes up with and be reassured that at least there are dumber people out there than myself, as a silver lining. When I think I did something totally stupid, all I have to do is think of Valve, and suddenly I feel a little bit better about myself. Everything serves a purpose! :D

Which is funny. "We could have implement a system where we assign a unique ID to every item and track its movement to avoid pointless duplicating. But that would cost money. And what is more frightening: we may have had to actually WORK on it. shudders So we just quintupled the trade hold and said okay, we're done."
Comment has been collapsed.
Frankly, since most of the time the targets are the otherwise totally cosmetic and practically useless CS:GO skins, even that would be enough. But, again, effort. And money. Gods knows, being able to buy three countries from the profits alone (not even joking…) is surely not enough revenue for a simple store, need more.

Jesus fucking Christ, that's just so infuriating! I'm so mad right now, jeez. Even the 7 days hold has been a fucking pain in the ass.
Comment has been collapsed.
They could easily solve the duplication issue by putting a 15 day hold on anything that gets transferred from person to person. Trade some stuff to someone? It gets put on hold for 15 days. Send a gift to someone? Gets put on hold for 15 days. This would not allow someone to transfer stuff from hijacked account and then sell it off to a dozen other people for at least 15 days. With this speed bump it would mean that they could easily reverse a trade on their end without worry that a dozen other people get screwed out of legit trades. After 15 days, if no report of a hijacked account has been sent in, the trade can no longer be reversed. And yes this would happen every time that same item is traded.
They could even have it so that, if both sides use the authenticator the 15 day wait is reduced to say 5 days.and after 5 days. though this one is iffy, I don't know how good it would be.
Comment has been collapsed.
If both side has authenticator, there is no wait time. O.o
Comment has been collapsed.
It could be, after all, Valve is so sure that this system can't be hacked because it would require someone to get access to both the computer and the phone.
Though there is the whole issue that you can already use an emulator to fake a smart phone already.
Comment has been collapsed.
It is stated in the article, i think. People with mobile authenticator are unaffected. But yea, valve are very sure this system can't be hacked xP

The emulator is on the computer, so if they get control of the computer they get control of the emulator, so its not any more secure. If the emulator is on another computer, its a bit more secure but most people don't have 2 or 3 spare computers around.

I use a Sidekick LX, from 2008, because I love the keyboard. Honest, that's what I use. It still has the original battery and it doesn't hold a charge for very long at all... but I love it, even though I was never a teenage girl (I'm an old guy). I really don't want, and really don't need, a smartphone. I txt on the Sidekick, and use my computer for every single other thing. I'll get new computer hardware, or even a new battery for the Sidekick, before I get a smartphone.
I certainly don't expect them to make anything able to run on Danger OS (Sidekick's OS). But I'm very upset that they're making it a serious hassle for anyone that doesn't use Android or iOS.

Steam Support will no longer restore items that have left accounts following a successful trade or market transaction (a process that previously created duplicates of original items)
hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
so this means if i trade a game for tf2 keys, and later the gift disappears from my account, i won't get back my keys?
that sounds like getting scammed twice, first by the trader, then by valve...

Now I'm so glad that I ended this bullshit and implemented my own 2FA into ASF, so I don't need to deal with all of that.
I'm even wondering if I shouldn't create another app which will purely be used to workaround all this shit for people without smartphones.

well i added this moblie crap so i can sell items at the market , the good news in case someone wonders any computer you log into with your steam account that you have set as secured (meaning remember my password) wont ask you for the code so even tho i have it i will never use it cause i never log from anywhere else , wehn you make a trade instead of email you get this sms crap i guess and you really need to remember to deactivate the app if you change phone and write down a recovery code in case you lost your phone (that recovery code can be a headache for messy poeple so be careful you need to adopt a way to write down this and never lose it)

Makes switching from Windows phone to an Android a 100x better. :D

Holy shit that's actually really long. You prob wont be friends with someone for that long unless you know them irl.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's going to apply to the market too, which is just stupid. Guess I'm going to have to find some way to use the authenticator (because GG Windows Phone).
My issue is that users without the authenticator will have to wait 15 days, even just to sell cards. That means that suddenly my market listings would be 15 days out of date by the time they went live. Good job, Steam.

You can also use emulators if you need some other apps (linked above).

Yeah, but be careful - you might receive SMS from Shteam after a very long time (like 40 minutes). DO NOT cancel or close WinAuth before that, because this is what will happen http://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/HVJuDWm

It's pretty annoying to be honest. I understand that there are people that don't know how to secure their accounts but we shouldn't all have to suffer. You should just be able to opt out of it and just agree to not getting your stuff back if you get "scammed".
