I've had 5 people add me to send me phishing links within the past couple of days... before this I have never had anyone try do this before. Proof. I reported all of them but why the sudden influx?

Gibway for your time

Because it's easy to do, you can have army of bots farming naive users and then stealing their accounts :/

Because Valve doesn't take a tougher stance against them. And selling steam accounts in ebay is profitable.

Because you have no idea what you are talking about.

Or you have no idea what I'm talking about. If valve took a tougher stance against these bot accounts or real people who are posting these kind of links in the first place, the number would be a lot less. ATM valve doesn't give a f*** and hence it's increasing.

Way to look smart with your comment.

ROFL,Valve has nothing with stupid people that logging into website with wrong url after they also clicked big warning notification that they going to non-steam site...

But if they wanted, they could do something about people/bot who post the links in the first place.

It's a fine example of free money, and there is little to no chance for any legal actions against the people responsible.

I think you have some valuable TF2 items that is the main reason and they discovered you.

  • I just got one too, the scary thing is that I don't remember approving the friend request at all and yet they were still able to send me a message! Pretty concerned about that fact.

The same thing happens to me, is there any way to block messages from people outside of friends list?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I'm wondering how they were able to message me because when I go on a non-friend's profile there's no send message icon so they must have messed with something. My profile is currently users-only so they could see it, but I doubt with normal means they could actually send me a message to my inbox like what happened.

I think if you're in the same group, they can message you that way even when you're not friends.

Valve needs to GREATLY update the Community features for steam anyway.

Some examples:

  • Ability to block group invites from people who aren't friends.
  • Block all messages (Private Chat Messages) from Non-Friends (this includes from people that are in the same group but not friends).
  • Have some system to let you be able to auto block known and confirm scammers (like people who have been banned from trading).
  • Better Privacy options (maybe pick and choose what friends can see what on your profile).
  • Better Options for Group Admins/Mods (You can't add somebody to a banlist for a group, you can only keep kicking them. If it's a public group, they can keep rejoining.)
  • A much better chat history log (saved somewhere on in userdata folder).
** Just having the last few messages saved isn't enough. They should have a complete chat history log for each person, kinda like how X-Fire does it. If they can do that in real time, there is no excuse that steam can't.
  • Ability to show all "hidden" achievements for games.
** This one annoyed the hell out of me that some games hide the achievements. I understand some may be spoilers, but we should at least be given the option to let us see all the achievements. I shouldn't have to go to external websites just to see how to unlock said hidden achievement. And no, i'm not an achievement whore.
  • BRING BACK THE /ME COMMAND DAMMIT!!!!

I listed some I could think of, but The list goes on and on.

I especially agree with the choose what people can see on my profile - for example I'd like to show my inventory/ games list only to friends, and a readme for prospective adds. I think if you're in the same group chat and someone requests a private chat there will be a pop-up and you can ignore it, but that doesn't explain how the phishing accounts manage to message people without that :/ agreed lots of things I'd like to see changed as well.

  • Ability to block those random group event popups.

And I'm happy they removed /me. Sure it was fun messing with friends (eg: /me slaps 'friend name' with a smelly fish) :p But they were used more by these phishers to scam new users.

They do if u contact them thru support, that's for sure.

Except that the time taken by them to look at a report is long. Very, very long. And the first reply on a report is usually like automated, with "Please report on their profiles" and stuff. It's only the second time that they reply properly. And this whole cycle can take upto a month.
