Hi all!

Ok, so there have been threads similar to this one, but I will ask this question again.

If, for example, I have bought a cd-key (Batman: Arkham City) which is region locked (Latvia) for me. Logically I wouldn't be able to activate this key, right? So, my question is could it work in a trick like this, that a friend of mine, who lives in a country in which this game is not region locked, would be able to activate it for me and afterwards I could play the game in my country?

I haven't bought it yet, that is why I'm trying to figure this out if it's worth to do so.

There were a couple of deals when I tried figuring out if I should risk buying it or not. There were deals on GMG, Amazon and on SteamBlackMarket. GMG and Amazon were 100% Steam keys, but about the latter one, I don't really know. Can't remember the prices, but they were really cheap.

Region locked games are exactly what they say, region locked. Steam is smart enough to know which region you're trying to play the game in.

The thing is that a friend of mine who lives in Latvia as well received the same game via Steam trade, by winning in a contest and she played it without problems. I just thought that this applies only to giftable copies and not the cd-key ones.

Arkham City is a strange game because it has two sets of DRM attached to it. I wouldn't take the chance if it's a key.

The main reason why Batman: Arkham City is region locked is because it has GFWL as a DRM. So I would not recommend that course of action because you wouldn't be able to play it.

There's actually a second activation that you need to do in-game with GFWL to play it, and since you can't use GFWL, naturally you can't play the game.

But it still puzzles me how my friend was able to add it to her Steam library and play it? I mean, won't I be able to do so as well?

You clearly said she lives in a country that isn't region locked, meaning she has GFWL. You won't be able to do the same thing as her.

No no, that's not what I meant. :D I have a friend who lives abroad and could activate it, but another friend from my country received it via Steam trade and played it. That's the puzzle. :D

I think all she did is put a fake address for her GFWL account.

No you're not getting updates from GFWL if you bought it on Steam. And I hope your GFWL account doesn't get banned for going against the TOS.

Isn't Steam the one updating your game instead?
