I remember playing part of Soul Reaver, I believe, on my cousin's PS1 years ago, but aside from that, I don't know much about the game series. This sale going on though and all these good things I hear about the series has me interested, so I was wondering which of the games I should go for?

Every single one! Legacy of Kain series is my best game ever. Characters, world, story, sounds, voice acting is perfect in those games. My favorite is Soul Reaver & Soul Reaver 2, but Blood Omen, Blood Omen 2 and Defiance was great too :)

The story is pretty complex, I'd recommend playing them in order of release. Defiance was probably my favorite, I never finished BO1 and SR1

The majority of people who have played the series recommend the entire series. The answer you will hear most often to the question of "Which one should I get?" is going to be "All of them."

My opinion:
Blood Omen - best gameplay
Soul Reaver 1 - best atmosphere and music
Soul Reaver 2 - best story
Blood Omen 2 - crap
Defiance - best... hm, nothing, but still worth to play

The opinion of a guy who has been a fan of the series for over 15 years, and even has a Legacy of Kain tattoo:

Soul Reaver is the absolute pinnacle of the series in terms of gameplay, world, setting, music, and story progression. Unfortunately, every version of it kind of looks like ass at this point. Well, except for the Dreamcast version; it still looks great, but I doubt you have access to that version. Soul Reaver is also the best jumping-on point of the series beyond the original Blood Omen. And since Blood Omen is nigh-impossible to acquire and even run on PC these days, Soul Reaver is your best bet.

Soul Reaver 2 is inferior to its predecessor in many ways, but the story is rather compelling, and the graphics hold up decently today.

Blood Omen 2 is buggy, poorly-designed, and serves more to screw up the overall narrative of the series, rather than complement it. On the upside, you get to play as Kain, and Kain is (as always) voiced by Simon Templeman, who is awesome.

Defiance, which is a quasi-Soul Reaver 3, ditches the fantastic exploration-based gameplay of the Soul Reaver series in favor of the developer's mediocre take on Devil May Cry-style "lift" based hack'n'slash combat. I remember reading a long time ago that their intent was to draw in new fans by making the series more action-based, but the ironic thing is, the storyline is so continuity heavy by this point that I can't imagine any non-fan playing the game and having any clue what's going on. It's worth powering through just to see (most) of the previous games plot threads resolved, but otherwise it's completely forgettable.

While Blood Omen 2 had it's share of bugs and quirks i still found it very fun to play, more so than Defiance to be honest. Kain is just too badass to go wrong with so he carried the game and exploration was still quite fun, unlike in Defiance.

Soul Reaver, i'v played and finished them all, multiple times, but none left a stronger impression on me than Soulreaver. Might be because it's the first one i played, but it was just amazing, great story, great graphics for it's time, awesome combat, great music, amazing world and feel.

I really wish they had made a new Blood Omen instead of more MOBA crap. I would have even settled for a reboot.

Personally, I think you should buy the whole Legacy of Kain Collection! It has 4 out of 5 games in the series because Blood Omen 1 cannot be played on PC!

Play Soul Reaver 1 & 2, followed by Blood Omen 2 and then by Defiance! You should be able to get the story by playing in this order!

I purchased the Legacy of Kain collection with all the games except the original Blood Omen from Crystal Dynamix. Does anyone know of a good place to get this? Is it worth picking up? It was originally on PlayStation, so is it best to play there or get a PC port? It's quite expensive to buy used, but some PC versions are around $10. Any suggestions?
