Hi guys, so the last giveaway I hosted on my group was pretty much a fail because of obvious lack of people participating, off course not many people were interested in becoming the mod of a group that has only 130+ members who never really post / interacted there.

SO

Here's what I am doing. I am gonna host a tournament on a free to play game like Dota2, Planetside2 Archeage or something like that and the top 6 people will win one of the following game :

Counter Strike Complete (which includes CSGO, Thank you !) Secret World Massive Edition Grid 2 The Walking Dead Season 1 + 2 2 copies of Space Engineers.

So thats 7 games and 6 winners in total. The walking dead 1 + 2 will go to 1 guy.

Its gonna be a traditional king of the hill tournament with the winner and the top 5 runner ups getting the games. All the matches will be recorded and uploaded on youtube. I am inclining towards making this a Dota2 tournament rather than any other game because of lag/ping issues.

More details and commencement dates will be available here :
Trade Group of Anarchists

This is a PAID TOURNAMENT : Entry Fee is 1 TF2 Key

NOTE TO CONCERNED CITIZENS OF STEAMGIFTS
The fact whether this post is against the rules of the site or not, let that be the concern of any admin that manages the site.
I have asked on a previous post whether such promotion is fine here : http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/w5ZVQ/tournament

I have also seen various indie game developers creating giveaways here to promote their Greenlight submissions and based on that and the response I received to my previous thread, I decided to carry on with the promotion here on steamgifts.

I have also launched a Support ticket asking to run this post by a mod to decimate all oppositions of opinions on this issue.

Personally i would preffer TF2 or something like that because i am really really bad at DOTA or any strategy game at all,but anyway good luck! great selection of games!

The problem with TF2 or any shooter will be ease at which they can be hacked and the problems high ping / latency can cause during game play.

+1 for team fortress 2
in tf2 ping is not a big problem. in my opinion, every ping till 100 is fine to play.

Personally I would maintain that if you want to do a tournament Unreal Tournament all the way. It has a much better netcode than pretty much every shooter out there. Problem is, it is not free.

Probably would be better off with NeoTokyo that said.

Someone from US could be matched up with someone from India, the avg ping difference will be well over 200ms

What server would you do Dota 2 on anyway? There's lag/ping issues with that as well. Personally if you want to play games where lag/ping is a non-issue, turn based strategy would be best.

TBS Games can take ages to complete. Server details and game details will be given out when I have more comments on the original thread.
Each match could have different servers based on the ping between the players in the match and the server.

One can still win a game in Dota2 with 250 ping but doing that in CS / TF2 / PS2 wont be easy.

While you're mentioning the details on the tournament page you're linking to, it might be good practice to mention here too that it's gonna be a paid tournament.

Yes it is a paid tournament.

Why isn't the detail of the entry fee on this post though

Call it a marketing trick if you will. 40% of the people reading the post will click & go to the post instead of reading the comments. That percentage of viewers would have been even lower if I mentioned the full details right up front.

I am trying to make a profit. This isnt a giveaway. Its a tournament. It doesnt benefit EVERYONE that participates, but only the winners / top 5 runner ups.

I do plan to come back with another tournament when this one completes investing what I get from this into the next prize pool.

I don't see any problem with it being a paid tournament, noone is forcing anyone to participate. Organizing this ain't easy and as long as the money (keys) collected somehow equal the price of the games possibly with like one key for the organizer for the time spent with it, it's fine. However for that sake I believe you should make tiers of prizes based on the number of players participating so that it is clear you are not taking advantage of the people here.

I think it contradicts one of the rules from FAQ.
Do not ask for any sort of payment/exchange in order to enter a giveaway. [...] (We could argue if it works with a said "tournament" but that might be just an excuse to ask for donations.) Correct me if I'm wrong.

Since they are promoting a tournament which as far as I am aware is giving away these games as prizes then I do not believe there is anything that can really be done.

However if they decided to make giveaways for these games and your only option was to essentially "pay to enter" then a whole shitstorm comes out and the OP is in fact violating the rules.

well I think it is against the rules, what he should do is to make a group for entries and ask for the payment there....I think that's a valid loophole

If you clicked the link you will be taken to the group where I am posting all the updates about this tournament.
Just like you think its against the rules, other users in another post here have thought that its ok to promote this here.

i think the mention of the entry fee is against the rules. Don't know if anything regarding this is in FAQ, but even other users could be wrong, support is the one who can give an answer. either way this doesn't bother me anyways.

You are right. That is why this is a tournament and not a giveaway, most importantly its not forced.

I did make a separate post previously asking if it was alright to post such things here, and only after a positive response I have posted this.

I do not wish to take advantage of the people, I wish to take advantage of the system.

It is a paid tournament, currently the prize pool includes games that could cost between 22 - 25 keys depending on the trader. I am looking to have at least 40 - 50 people participating churning out 40 - 50 keys. 40 players would actually make the entire event a fun one instead of just 10 or 15 people.
Only 6 out of 40 people would actually receive the prizes that too depending on their skills and luck (and also ping), and then those 6 people would get their prizes depending on their overall rank at the end of the tournament.

Now, it might seem unfair to some and might say that I am ripping off the losers in the tournament, but like you said, its a paid tournament, I am giving you a chance to win something based on your skills and not just your luck (like in a raffle).

From the organizer's point of view my investment in this event will be my time and the games which I already have amassed in my inventory. I could have chosen 1 AAA game instead of 6 smaller titles but then the chances for someone to win anything will reduce from 14% to 2 % (considering 50 people participate).

I am not WCG or The International where I already have a huge sponsorship & revenue system in place to have the event earn it's own keep but who knows maybe I'll get there someday.

Stopped reading at "games that could cost between 22-25 keys depending on the trader" I think everyone knows, especially this community, that counter-strike complete was like a month ago on sale, around 4-5 keys.

Without revealing much, I can tell you that the finals and play offs will be singles 1 v 1 matches.

Like it or not not many people know about Newerth, I actually had to google HON to be reminded that THAT game still exists. Forget about getting 50 people I wont get 5 people. Plus the prizes are steam games so naturally the tourney game has to be on steam.

As far as the entry fee goes, like I said, its not a giveaway.

In a raffle one wins by pure luck. Easy to scam. You buy a ticket and stare at the ceiling & hope to win.
In a tournament one wins not only by his luck but also HIS GAMING SKILLS. You buy your entry you FIGHT to win.

Other than the obvious reason, i.e. pure greed, why are you advertising your scheme here? I don't see any connection to steamgifts at all.

I don't know if there is any rule in the FAQ explicitly prohibiting this sort of raffle garbage, but I don't think it belongs on steamgifts. You might want to ask the support people if this is ok here.

Yep you caught me, I am being greedy here, to be honest I was hoping to make a few million dollars by talking about a tournament selling people a CHANCE to earn their WINS in a site where people come to get free stuff without doing anything.

Sarcasm aside.

Raffle : A raffle is a gambling competition in which people obtain numbered tickets, each ticket having the chance of winning a prize. At a set time, the winners are drawn at random from the tickets sold.

Tournament : A tournament is a competition involving a relatively large number of competitors, participating in a sport or game, where in a relatively short time interval multiple matches are concluded and the winners are decided based on the results of the matches.

I did make a previous post asking community members here if this kind of promotion is ok.
I only managed to get a single guy to respond though : http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/w5ZVQ/tournament

The point isn't the size of your profit. As you describe it, you're claming to be "selling people a chance." Take a look at the other threads in the forum - can you find even one other person selling anything? No? Why not?

As you know from reading the Steamgifts FAQ, one of the forum rules is:

If you would like to include some self-promotion in the chat or forum, please run it by a mod first.

That means clicking here, writing your question, and waiting (and waiting...) for a reply.

Some may find your description of Steamgifts "a site where people come to get free stuff without doing anything" telling. Although trying to get free stuff without doing anything may accurately describe your contribution to Steamgifts, a generous person bought each of those games you've tried to win, and they gave it away for free, asking nothing in return. Why? Any idea at all?

If you're here to make a profit, you're in the wrong place, friend. :)

has to be profit, no other reason, if it was promotion of a group or game or somethin like that the entry fee would have been waved, its purely to make money but in my eyes a sly way of doing it

Read the previous replies I made, I have clearly stated my intentions. Which are to make profits from this tournament & re invest it in the next tournament and fill my coffer. I cannot forsee what if any profit I might make off of this tournament but I can assure everyone that the prize pool for the next one will be of a higher value than this one.

And let me point out something very clearly, most of the naysayers here only have a problem with me charging an entry fee for a tournament, they might be confusing this for a giveaway which it is NOT.
It is a TOURNAMENT, where the host ALWAYS makes money either through paid entry fees or through sponsors.

At least you agree to the part that if I open a ticket it has zero chances of being answered.

I chose to ask the community members, I got an answer and then made a post. In my book taking advice from an experienced user of a product (this website) is almost the same as taking advice from the manufacturer of the product (the admins).

With that said, if my promotion of the tournament is 'not allowed' why are people allowed to promote their greenlight games here through giveaways ? Isnt that a 'sly' way to eventually take your money ?

Regardless if my promotion of the tournament is against this forum's policy then let the first moderator that comes across this post shut it down.

can someone enter maybe for a dota game without paying the entry fee, but enter without a chance at winning anything.

e.g can I enter just for fun, I don't really care for a prize.
