When you giveaway items, it adds to the total value of your giveaways. a lot of people post giveaways that recquire you to have given away X$ worth of stuff (very often only 1 cent) so yes, it gives you access to more giveaways

There IS a certain satisfaction to contributing.

What I like to do is find something on sale for a very low price -- or pick up one of the Humble Indie Bundles early, paying above average -- then wait for the promotion to end. I then put up the item. There's bound to be people who weren't able to take advantage of the promo (they didn't have the money at the time, or just didn't know about it).

I've put up some decent items this way without spending an exorbitant amount of money. I've also won a couple really good titles from here, so it's worked both ways for me.
