I liked The Albino Hunter. I recommend it!
It works fine on wine on Linux.

Thorne - Death Merchant
The game has real-time-combat instead of the norm turn based combat, a must play for RPG Maker fans.

You get to play the game in the perspective of two different characters, at odds with one another, who must settle their differences to confront a common evil (a vengeful spirit).
The story is rich, and the battle system is simple, yet total mastery of it is needed to win the harder (optional) boss battles; e.g., you need to know which enemies are weak against spirit, or darkness attacks. Spirit attacks hurt ethereal beings, while darkness attacks hurt evil/demonic creatures. Sometimes you can't tell between them and must guess.
Having not played any of the Ultima games -- maybe too cumbersome to control and play -- this game was a welcome alternative, and has graphics eerily similar to Ultima VIII: Pagan (1994 -DOS).
(if the Ultima games were this user-friendly, I would have played them too.)
This game is featured in my profile page, proving how much I liked it.
It's currently 90% off -- a must buy

Hm, I think an RPG maker games which is hardly known but nonetheless really interesting is Wait - Extended. No RPG actually but an atmospheric Horror Game. If you need more information have a random review.

I personally loved Actual Sunlight. There's not much gameplay, it's more like a VN / movie with a couple of interactions but I definitely recommend it.
Like others mentioned, To The Moon is a must play as well!

I made a thread a loooong time ago that may help you out
I personally recommend Lisa and To The Moon. Both were amazing. Some other ones I own and like are: The Albino Hunter, Always Sometimes Monsters, 199x, The Deed, Richard & Alice and Stray Cat Crossing
I'm more into the non combat, and primarily story driven ones, the only one I suggested with combat are Lisa and The Albino Hunter :)
If you are also talking about non steam related ones, then I have some good recs too. I def had an rpg maker faze lol

Lisa - The Painful / Joyful
Albino Hunter
I don't know about RPG MAKER but the older Aveyond games were pretty interesting, albeit I only ever played the demo when I was younger. The "Twilight series" is mediocre-ish.
There's also Eternal Senia. Free and very good.

Corpse Party.
Yeah, sure it's been remade and gotten sequels using other engines. But the very release in the series was made with the first version of RPG Maker.

I am wondering what is possible to achieve with a game making tool like RPG Maker. So therefore my question: What RPG maker game do you like best and would recommend me to try out?
