Properly cooked traditional Chinese food isn't unhealthy, you're right. The westernized near-fast-food Chinese restaurants that most North Americans eat though is unhealthy.

Sugar with couscous? Never heard of this food before. I've eaten couscous but only as a ricelike thing. If you like couscous I recommend bulgur, it's awesome. Healthy and tastes better than regular rice.

Not that I can think of right now. There might lie nothing into it, it's just the way most of the western world seem to think of the US; add sugar to everything and eat more fat and more in general than anybody needs.
