I kinda feel like like there should be some sort of fairness rules in place. Lots of people seem to be vying for games they already have copies of, and I feel it should be going to someone who doesn't own the game first, as well, they should be some sort of daily, or weekly limit on the amount of games someone should be able to 'Win' before all their current 'Entered Giveaways' are canceled (And Points Refunded.), and are unable to re-enter until whatever timer restarts.

--OR--

at the very least, People creating give aways can opt to exclude people who already own the game on their account from participating, or, have a certain number of 'Wins' within a certain time period, and leave it up to the Giver on if they wanna give the game to someone who doesn't own it yet. I recently put up two Humble Frozenbyte Bundles, and part of me was hoping it'd go to two folks who didn't own the games, as opposed to someone who already had the games. (Luckily, it did!), and I'd felt really slimy if it just went to some guys who had all the games anyways.

Yeah, Random is Random, but someone winning like, 3-4 times in a day is kinda ridiculous. --- http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/y35wp/has-anyone-won-more-than-one-game

I am torn on the "already own it" issue. I know in my case, I would really like to get a copy of Portal 2 for my wife so that we can play the co-op together. So if I entered for Portal 2 and won it, it would be going to her, not to me. So yea, I am the one that entered, and yea, I already own it, but SHE does not own it. Its not like I am taking the game and selling it or something. In this scenario, you ARE still giving it to someone who does not own the game yet. I would only enter on behalf of my wife, because she does not have an account here, otherwise she could just enter herself.

As far as the whole random thing... I agree, people winning 4 games is aggravating when there are still hundreds of us that have not won anything. Random is great and all, but fairness needs to be taken into consideration too. I think that once you win a giveaway, all your other entries should be cancelled, and you should not be able to enter any new giveaways for a week. I don't think anyone would be too upset over that.

No, I think that the whole "it's for my wife/gf/friend/teacher/whatever" excuse shouldn't fly for a variety of reasons. The first being that if we allow one person to do this, it lets everyone enter for games they already own and we're back to square one. Second being that we don't know if you're telling the truth. That doesn't mean I don't believe you, I don't care if it's really for your wife or not; this is the internet, people can lie. Third is that accounts here are invite only and limited, if admins wanted more accounts on here we would have been given invite codes to send to people.

there is a section to send invites, and as they are obviously still tinkering with options and enlarging the community slowly i have a feeling we will get those invite codes sooner rather than later. thats how /i/ got on here, was through an invite code, i dont know about you.i think that there doesnt need an excuse to be given credence or not, if someone has a purpose for the game, /especially/ if its to give to someone who doesnt have the obvious advantage we do in being a beginning part of this, i think thats furthering the purpose of this site beyond its original intent in a /good/ way. bringing up the people can lie on the internet aspect at the same time you say you dont necessarily Disbelieve what he is saying honestly just makes a post sound as if its picking and trying to cause a bigger issue.

i just won a game i have never played. it felt great. the drawings tell you how many people are in a raffle for the game, and if your smart with your entries you can win some really good low key games pretty reliably in a short amount of time. the game i won had 50 or so entries, compared to some of the 500+ entry games i have seen. just because a person chooses to go after less popular games should not negate their chances of winning other drawings. also, if its random, and everyone can enter and win multiple drawings, by the theory of probability, you have just as much chance to win multiple games as they do, provided you are /smart/ about what you join and that you look at the entries and realize that you have a .2% chance for a game with 500 entries, 2% chance with a game with 50 entries, and 20% chance with a game with 5 entries. be smart and on the ball, and you can up your chances. also, a willingness to try lower end, less well known titles helps and will open up your gaming horizons.
also, as to the entering for games a person already owns, i would love winning a multiple coopy i can then give to a friend who doesnt know about this site or doesnt want to participate, as well as regift on this site if i dont have a use for the game. i highly doubt that people just have random extra copies laying around without a use in mind for them at some future point. if steam gives the user an option to only allow people who dont own the game a chance at it, it would only be fair if in my opinion they gave the user the option to only give to people who do have it. if you limit the possible winners, the target audience, one way, to be fair you need to be able to allow the user to limit it in the opposite way as well. which is why, in my opinion, random without restriction is as fair as it gets.

one of the games sharpie won had 31 entries, one had 55.

Why would somebody want a giveaway solely open to people who already own the game being given?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i am of the opinion that if they are entering the giveaway, they want another copy for some specific reason. just as everyone else who is entering the giveaway. so, they shouldnt be punished if they are trying for a gift for a friend. i got my start on steam, years ago, by someone giving me a gift of a game. all i am saying is they shouldnt be penalized for wanting to do something nice for a friend, in all likelihood.

The people who enter the giveaways and don't have the game should have the chance to win it. People who already have the game are taking advantage. This site isn't even fully public yet, so the other people you enter for should have to wait until it is, then they can sign up if they want to.

Most of the people who are buying the games want to give it to somebody ON HERE, who DOESN'T have the game. If you want to do something nice for a friend, buy them a game and give it to them. We're buying the games we put up here for people here on this site, who don't have the game, and are part of this community. Not for you to give to friends.

The "specific reason" for entering a giveaway you already have is more often than not greed. You already have the game, you don't need another copy. People may give them away to friends/family, or they could trade the code to somebody else and get a game they don't already have out of it.

I don't think there'd be one person here who'd put up a giveaway only for people who have the game already.... It doesn't make sense.

whether or not the person is on this site, the game does eventually go to someone who does not own it. if i want to use the site as a resource to get games for people i am good friends with who arent lucky enough to be a part of this /site/ but are still active members of the steam community, i should be able to do so. this site connects people to others who they dont know and have never heard of, thats not what i would define as a specific community that should be selfcontained. i have kept my comments as impersonal as possible and did not attack anyone at all, i merely stated an opinion and my take on a situation. if it comforts you, say in the description you want the game to go to people who dont own it and i wont enter your raffles. this site went from 200 people to over 2000 in a matter of three days, why would you want to confine your generosity to a few people when the end result is the same: new people get a game you like?

Not really Nashgasm. The fact of the matter is, the person who won 4 times is most likely going to sell or use the copies as 'Trade' bait to aquire other games from people.

I'd like some hard system in place, and that seems to be popular opinion here.

If he sells or trades them, he is missing the entire point of this place. I think you are missing the point as well. Nobody is saying to exclude people for being lucky, we are saying exclude those who already have the games being given away.

i get the point of the site, please dont tell me i dont. you arent getting my point. and i think it boils down to a difference of opinion rather than someone 'missing the point', because we are all intelligent enough to see the inherent value of the site and the concept, and so are intelligent enough to form different opinions on the details of the process we each would prefer. i think we can both agree that it would fix the issue if they just gave a giver toggle when setting up the giveaway, or a set of them, to refine exactly the audience the giver is targeting, but that would be best in a larger community, in my opinion. as i see it there is definitely room for explosive growth here, so it will probably eventually happen.

Sure, it would resolve the issue is there was an option for either, I'm just saying that most people would never click the "only people who own game" toggle.

This is a bad mindset. You assume that people are entering contests just for the chance to win something, no matter what it is. Maybe I don't want to play the low-key games that get listed; maybe I only enter drawings for games that I know I'll play. I don't know about you, but I like to know that people I gift games to will get enjoyment out of what I give them.

yeah this site has to be rigged, there's people that have only entered a handful of contests and won 2 or 3 games already. This site has to be rigged, there's already quite a few people that are winning regularly and its not fair to the rest of us.
I think the people that run this site need to put more rules in place, like you can only win once a week or something, fucking give everyone else a chance.

Comment has been collapsed.

How is this site rigged? Some people are lucky, some people aren't. This is the nature of things.

In addition, there are statistics posted by CG, the owner of the site as of 2 days ago.
1 Win - 131 Users
2 Wins - 16 Users
3 Wins - 3 Users
4 Wins - 1 User

So 20 have won multiple games out of 151 people. I would venture to say that most of those 20 entered low key games such as Portal or Half Life 2, etc. (at least the 4 wins at the time had 2 copies of Portal).

The site seems pretty fair. If you think the site is rigged, don't participate. No one is putting a gun to your head to participate and no one is forcing you to pay anything to join.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Those stats aren't accurate anymore. There's people who have won at least 5 by now, maybe even 6.

What needs to be taken into account is how many entries the contests those people won had. Winning 5 games with hundreds of people entered in each of them, sometimes back to back wins, does not seem very statistically sound, and beyond "luck".

3 Wins - 8 Users

4 Wins - 2 Users (Sharpie, joshtaco)

5 Wins - 2 Users (BlueLegion, enjoyslongwalks)

Like I said, because people like BlueLegion enter for games like Portal and Half Life 2, which have very few people wanting them, thus low entries. That and a little bit of luck and you get 5 wins. I feel I should interject here to address some of your concerns. I should note that this is my own opinion, it should not be perceived as the opinion of the site's staff.

The site has only been accessible for 4 days, after reviewing the first 2 days of access a points system was discussed and implemented to address the problems that arose in those first 2 days. Giveaways set-up in those first 2 days still have these "problems", and will continue to have them until they end. The problem you're "making your voice heard" about is one that effects the point-less system.

The point-system solves the problem you're concerned about by limiting users so they only enter giveaways they're interested in. For now we just have to wait until the point-less giveaways disappear before we can properly evaluate the effectiveness of the points system and decide what action to take should any new problems arise.

As for the site being rigged... it is not, it is pseudo-random; this meaning that the site tries to emulate randomness (it is not possible to have true randomness in any system) when choosing a winner. This site does not interfere with this "random" picking of a winner, if a user spends their points to enter a giveaway they always have the same chance of winning as anybody else who has spent points to enter that giveaway; they should not be penalised because they have won giveaways multiple times.

This is how I think it should work on a points system, it should be a fair playing field regardless of whether or not somebody has won before. The site's purpose is to not guarantee every member a free game, is it to host giveaways and produce random winners. If you're here expecting free games, you're very likely to be disappointed.

It was my giveaway that he just won, and yeah; it's his sixth. As I said earlier, most of his wins were because he entered a lot of giveaways that existed before the points system was introduced - there were no rules against this, the points system was introduced to stop people entering everything.

My Deathmatch Classic giveaway was created when the points system was here, it cost him 5 points to enter and so he had as much chance as everybody else at winning. Winner's are selected randomly, he is lucky; there is nothing more to it. If you have a problem with it, then you have a problem with the way the site picks winners; unfortunately I don't see a fair way of picking winners other than doing it randomly.

I'd like the the option to exclude people who already own the game from giveaways. But I absolutely feel like the site is fair already. Some people will win more than others, that's just how math works.

I think some of the most fun of this site is the 'giving' and the 'hoping' parts though. Actually winning a game is kinda a bonus, in my mind. It's like a lottery scratch-off ticket rather than a raffle mindset, maybe. Or vice versa. :)

Let me deliver unto you a glorious revelation: Your pitiful chances at winning the giveaways still puts you ahead of where you were before. Namely, you had nothing, and now have a chance of something. To complain about not receiving something when you had only a chance and not a guarantee, a chance that cost you nothing is... well... irrational to put it lightly.

Took me 60-odd entries before I won a giveaway, and even then that was only a 19% chance*, which, frankly, is good odds for getting free stuff. People, just enter into giveaways for games you want. Don't get butt-hurt when you don't get something you haven't paid for. Be persistent. Eventually the dice may roll your way.

*Assuming an average chance of winning to be 1 in 300.

From my perspective, people here are becoming too jealous and super greedy (O_O TO THOSE PEOPLE) and the system is true to it's words with randomness, although for the members winning in the case of blue legion; it's luck man, he entered fairly and even joined low # giveaways.

My Suggestion, would be when a person creates a giveaway, they can choose who wins and not this random mechanic because too many people whine and cry about not winning. IDC if this system takes place. I'm just here to just roll my dices and hope some luck will shine upon my email one day (Reffering to SteamGifts) as well as saying some huge TY's to these generous people offering these games.

If some of the greedy members don't change this community around it'll be 99% GREED and only 1% grateful people as a result we won't see a lot more giveaways to be offered.

For the people who whine just suck it up and stay strong and be patient. THE TIME WILL COME for you all and I; the most we can just do is just upgrade this community into an awesome website like SGS( Steam Game Sales ) I've been on that site for a long time and Cg's prototype that has been through so many changes I myself have seen the growth of that site and nearly broke a tear to all the great people I've met there. (Shout Out to all my friends here!!!! :D)

As a long time and still a member of SGS and moving on to Cg's third site (Not sure if he might have another one... Cg I'm watching you with these guys ಠ_ಠ)

My only hope is that this community will become super friendly and nice and at least FORMAL... like SGS
