They died during the mid to late '90s. It's only in the past few years that they've enjoyed a comeback. Gaming is still a new entertainment, we don't know what will be popular next year, let alone later on in life. Your best bet is to focus on what you enjoy, but learn all the tools in order to perform your job well. 3D modelling is used in 2D gaming too, and you should never write-off a whole portion of the industry because who knows where your big ideas will take you. You may only have good ideas for 2D games, but if you or a friend comes up with a great 3D game idea, it's better to know your stuff than to lose out on an opportunity.

Impossible.
Humans are only able to visualize objects that are in 2 or 3 dimensions. Games, and everything else, will always be made in a way the human eye/brain can perceive.

"Indie" is not a genre of games. I don't know why people keep referring to is as one.
Super Meat Boy and FTL are both indie games, but would you say they're the same genre?
And no, 2D games will never die because they're still going strong even though 3D games have been around for 20+ years.

Hah.. I admit I am one of those oddballs that do tend to prefer the 2d fighting games over the 3d ones. Though I do love some of the 3d games. ( Tekken, Battle Arena Toshinden.... sect )

Niet.
2D games it's still awesome. Personaly, i don't play any game on 2D on PC, but on my phone, i fucking love games in 2D.
Terraria it's 2D, it's one of the best 2D games (my opinion).
Surely someone will think again to bring back to life the 2D games. We just need a clever idea and a serious games company.
I love 2D games.

Another thought:
You're 14. Start making 2D games and worry about the industry later. You have a lot of time to learn 3D if the need arises. It doesn't matter if 2D will die in the long run (though it probably won't). Most likely you will need to adapt to doing things a different way over time, as anyone in the programming or game development business has done. So do what you want and can now, and adapt if and when you need to.

Yeah, this is the best advice, I guess :) Just start doing it without any worries, you will earn a lot of valuable experience and looking into 3D later will not hurt in any case.

There will always be a place for 2D games, even if its popularity ebbs and flows over the years. Most genres fall out of disfavor eventually, but that vacuum just creates a market down the road. Case in point: adventure games post-Grim Fandango.

I think 2D games will never die. Think of how awesome some recent 2D titles like "Super Meat Boy", "Papers, please!" and "La-Mulana" are. Sure, they might not be as visually stunning as, say, "Skyrim" or "Battlefield 4", But they are still fun games to play, being "Papers, please!" a really innovative game, and I guess the same could be said about both the original "La-Mulana" and its remake.
And there are great 2D flash games out there as well ("Mardek RPG" series, "I am an insane rogue AI", "Robot wants" series, "Snailiad", just to name a few), and people love them.

Well, first, i'm 14 years old, and i love playing videogames, i like most genres but mainly i love Indie and 2D games.
Yesterday, i was talking with my uncle and i told him that when i grow up i want to study programming, and because i love drawing cartoon-style, i would like to be a developer and make my own indie games in a 2D style because i love that kind of games and it's my dream, since i was a kid, i dream that someday i can create a game similar to Megaman X, because it's one of my favorite games.
But he said that it's better doing 3D games and i would need to study 3D modeling, because looking to the marketing side, technology is advancing and everyone would prefer 3D games than 2D games at the future.
As i said before, i like any genre of videogames, but i seriously have a personal love to the 2D ones and Indies, and i felt a little bad, but now i just want to post it here to see your opinions.
Thanks for reading and posting your comments, i hope my english is enough good to be understandable :)
Here's a little and cheap giveaway i made to thank you guys :) Fortix
EDIT: Guys, thanks a lot :). You made me feel better, and think and learn a lot from you.
Most people told me that i should study 3D too, and now i think it's a good idea :P. Thanks again, i really appreciate it :)
