if you don't want to learn it, jsut get a greasemonkey/tampermonkey script that does formatting. markdown isn't perfect but lot better than old BBS tags IMO. Plus its more or less consistent with reddit, which is a plus in my book.

I disagree, I still prefer BBCode over this. Markdown is only good for really simplistic little forums.

To each their own. To me, it feels like somebody is always coming out with some new markup/markdown/plaintext formatting syntax every couple years and I have to relearn everything anyway so I guess my preference is just to have consistency on the sites I go to (so I can completely understand if you still use some BBS threads and have to change it up here). I used to know BBS and XWiki syntax at some point, but I mostly have forgotten them at this point.

I like markdown, but I am probably biased since I am a programmer and it is used in code repositories for creating readme files and is somewhat ubiquitous on the web with more popular sites like reddit using it as well as more niche sites like SG or naturalcrit.homebrewery (dnd homebrew templating site). If I have a complaint about markdown, it's that there isn't any commonly agreed upon standards (there are at least 3 or 4 different variations of it)... not a big deal for SG/reddit but kind of annoying for programming because different editors will support different flavors. I think what I like most about it though is that I generally have a few less characters to type than with other systems but maybe its just me or I am mis-remembering things again. :-)

Nothing useful to you, you mean? It's easy to escape markdown with \. #See?

Well, yes they do. That's the point of code block, that they ignore formatting..

Well, it's quite annoying when I write something and it ends up being different from what I intended.

This is *really* annoying. Not really annoying.

I demand that we change everything to written in LaTeX in emacs but specifically through a bash script running an ssh tunnel through another machine.

Use \ before it. It's even ledious that starting each sentence with a capital letter which is not exactly much of a strain.
edit: except that apparently that's too much for you as well lol

Markdown is great. If only SG used the default version which allows inline images, it would have been perfect.

Not going to happen but I know what you mean. Never been a fan of all those custom syntaxes, HTML is a standard and so easy to use, why bother with 10 poor copycats?
