I just reminded myself of that game. Probably not many of you were playing it (I dont even think if anyone here have seen it) but damn, that was nice piece of game. Dunno why I'm starting this topic...maybe some ppl will share their memories of this game :P

For all of you that dont know this game. Think of it as Don't Starve precursor but in MMO, without "horror" in "survival horror", with old-looking graphics and with lot more options and things to do than Don't Starve is offering. And with skills. Lot of em.

I had lots of good time with this game. Especially when I started playing with new character (when u die, u die, just like in DS...and well, if you happen to spawn in needleleaf forest you were basically dead [almost no easy-to-get food]) and made small settlement with two random guys.
We've build 2 houses, crops field, a well and other stuff. And we've finally claimed a land (you could claim a land by putting special sign and spending Learning points to claim/buy the zone around. After land has been claimed u could set permissions to it. But still, if someone had tresspassing skill he/she could enter your land and along with other hard-to-get skill he/she could steal from you and even kill you.
I remember that we've met a guy that gave us a boat and many usefull items for newbies. Later we've sailed the river for pretty long time and found his camp. One of the best parts was also finding abandoned camps or even full towns and getting as more stuff as you could from them. I also remember that we've found incredibly big abandoned "village" with totally big field with crops...and we couldnt get any of them cus the land was claimed and none of us had the stealing skill :|

Well...discuss. If there is anyone to do it :P

Yes you're right. As far as I know Salem is basically H&H but in 3D. Or at least it was when I last checked it :)

EDIT: Hmm...its free, I thought it would have payment option. I totally need to check it out :D

I found current map of Haven and Hearth (still not fully mapped). As far as I know its world 7 since game start. http://sabinati.com/havenmap/

You can see how big the world is...Zoom with mouse wheel to see more details.

I remember than in Jungle the game lagged horribly. It was basically unplayable to live in Jungle or even near it. I'm not sure right now but I think that Jungles are the white zones on map.

Maybe some people here remember discussion where Haven and Hearth was found to be the only true free to play MMORPG in existence.

Anyway I played H&H with friends for a while and we were doing great. We had a pretty big sized village with houses, fields, mine entrance and small forest protected by palisade. But game become boring too fast and started to feel like work - we had to login every day and do some mindless tasks or else we didn't receive skill points, crops wither, food spoil, items broke, we could be robbed etc. So we became one of those ghost towns ourselves. I hate to say that, but while exploration and survival is fun at first, there isn't much to do in endgame.

Well, cant tell about endgame cus I never reached it :) Its way too hard to get most of the things that game offers while playing alone. I've never reached mines :) Never had a cellar in my house. As I can remember The first big thing that requires lots of Learning Points and time/materials I did was the ram. And I've never used it :P

But I can imagine what you're talking about. Since survival and learning new stuff is the core of the game, nothing changes at the end. Basically I think that you can expand more and more your settlement, form a guild, recruit ppl...and raid other villages :D

And yea - this was and probably is the only totally free to play MMO. No charges, no boosts, no premium accounts, no cash shop.

Have you tried Salem ? I think I'll download it tomorrow. Tried to find the map of server but all I found is that there is no map of entire server :P Probably its too big to host or smth

We played Salem a little but disliked its ugly 3D graphics compared to cute H&H sprites. Also server population in Salem was much lower at the time and we rarely met other players and villages. So we dropped Salem quickly.

Well H&H could have stylized graphics but yea, Salem is way off today 3D graphics standards :P

I played H&H alot, permadeath puts everything you do in perspective, your character really is "built" and needs security

It was a huge communist village named Melsonia :3 and had all the goodies as an exclusive miner :D Bear sallamy, Midnight Blue cheese etc :D

And yes we had a gulag for the new recruits

I loved this game since W3 and I wanted to play in older world when I saw how simple it was before :| I played every world then... W4 as a miner with friend in a Village then in Winterfell, W5 we had our own Village and recruited some players but we got bored quickly, I remember I could kill a boar and deer with only unarmed and sword... W6 I started with random guys, we made a big Palisade, planted some crops, but then I was just wandering and saw a fox. I was going to kill it witn unarmed (around 40 skill points) and I did, then I saw another one so I attacked it. I had too low Health and Fox started to gain Iniciative and I lost my character, lel. Then I made a break for about 1 or half a year. When I came back I settled alone and meet some Russians that took me into their Village, It didn't last for long ( about 3 weeks) because then they restarted the world and W7 has started. I don't remember do I played it, but I would like to play the old good H&H, me and my friends that I played with don't have the power to play it again xd. I also tried Salem, but I realised that it is very different from H&H... I played with a friend I met in game, but then he was offline for long time and the game was too hard for me alone... Too many skill points, eating special food, hunting... Now I don't play it, but I was wondering if it is possible to play H&H Singleplayer or Lan or something, but I don't think so it is possible. Anyways, I have a nice experience with H&H and i will allways remember it :)

Soo...Salem is even harder than H&H ? Well, I guess that as you say - playing it alone would be too much troublesome.

And back then I was also wondering if it would be possible to play H&H as singleplayer game. But well later I just admitted that it would be unplayable as singleplayer cus basically the core of the game except whole survival thing is to play with other players, make alliances or start wars :P

Then I found Don't Starve which as I said is basically H&H in singleplayer but with far less options and things to do.

Yes, Salem is more complicated than H&H I didn't liked it in beta, maybe now it is better. In games like this You have to be aware who you meet, because they might want to kill you :P But with someone to play it is easier.

I haven't played the game for a while, but I loved the basic ideas behind it and it's probably the best survival game around. I got bored, though - ultimately it becomes a ridiculous 'eat as much as you can' grind and lacks any serious universal goals, especially for solo players or those just playing with close friends. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys survival/crafting games gives it a go anyway, but unfortunately for longer term enjoyment you need to be part of a larger group.

The game actually has a somewhat rare item named after me. :) I became infamous for some of my deeds during an early version - in particular, I sabotaged a rapidly growing village by chopping down all of their trees, and that was at a time when it wasn't actually possible to plant new trees. Opinions of me were mixed - even my own opinions of myself and what I did are mixed, haha - but I'm kinda proud of my part in the game's history and honoured that the developer added a little tribute to me.

Yea, when I started the game, I was playing alone with 3 or 4 chars. When I met those ppl and we started to play together, game was even better. I cant speak about "higher level" activities cus I never reached them :P. But even earlier it was all about food and expanding your territory. I remember that once a guy wearing black armor or smth raided our small camp and killed me. I had to create new char and go back. Then it turned out that this guy had his small fortress just a lil north of us...so it became kinda pointless to stay there cus he was still killing us over and over

Yeah, there's people like that who have grinded their stats to the point where they can practically punch down walls so nowhere is safe.

The term 'griefer' there is used inaccurately and unfairly - yes, my actions upset some players, but others respected me for them and I did what I did for genuine gameplay reasons, not just to cause trouble. If I was really a griefer, they wouldn't have honoured me with an item like that. :)

http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/ - according to the stats, ATM 377 ppl are playing the game. Pretty much, as far as I can remember when I was playing there were at most smth like 1000 ppl. So basically - yes, its alive :P.
