Today, the developers behind Subnautica, Unknown Worlds, announced a stand-alone expansion for their hit game, and will be releasing it in Early Access in the coming months.

Since, release, we've been blown away by the response to Subnautica. We're thrilled that so many of you have enjoyed exploring planet 4546B, and we want to create more underwater adventures for you to enjoy.
To do that, we've decided to build a stand-alone expansion to Subnautica, called Subnautica Below Zero. Set in an ice-bound region of planet 4546B, after the events of the original game, Below Zero will offer a new chapter in the Subnautica universe.

Some stuff for you to click and read about the expansion:

Yes, I'm interested.
Hell yes, I just peed a little.
No, not at all.
I'll decide later when this Thanksgiving food buzz fades.

Sounds better than Subnautica: Battle Royale

Subnautica is a great game, I'd certainly be interested in a stand-alone expansion...

you forgot to quote the whole article, sg-style 😁

We would like to show you some of Below Zero's concepts, and share our plans for release.
In the coming months, we will release an unfinished, early version of Below Zero in Early Access. We will then begin releasing consistent content updates, carefully crafting the game based on your feedback - Just like the original Subnautica.
---
We don't want to specify an exact date, or even a vague date, because setting dates never ends well for anyone. We can never predict how long development will take, and we don't want to set any expectations we can't be sure we will meet.
---
The concept of Below Zero is still developing. We are keeping the core gameplay mechanics, such as base building and open-ended exploration. We are also exploring new ones, such as thermal management, and more voiced dialogue at the core of the plot. We're still in early stages and nothing is set in ice. These features may change prior to, and during, Early Access.
---
To be notified the moment Below Zero is available in Steam Early Access, subscribe to the Subnautica Development Mailing List[unknownworlds.com]. We can't wait to get your feedback on a new underwater adventure.

sg-style

he uses Twitter only for gibs, so you really shouldn't expect much from him, imho.

those pictures are gorgeous, like this idea of an "ice-Subnautica" (devs are truly more than great + they're all @twitter)

tried the game 2 times, and i think i'll need a third, to really/fully enjoy. huge game, thou.

(that Trello on their page seems kinda... promising, also)

you'd use Mully template for your next post, bro

I wish they would address the issues with VR support form their game (like missing cut-scenes, interface issues, and lack of motion controller support) before working on a new expansion.

Have you played it in VR? What do you think?

I need this expansion like I need another heart attack. Which is what I'm pretty sure the first one gave me several of.

I'll poke it with a long stick until it's cheap enough though - since heart attacks aren't really what I'm usually enjoying in a game I tend to not want to pay full price for them. Or much at all really.

I thought they announced this a while back? I'm sure I saw some things on game sites, but they only made an official announcement yesterday? Weird.

I'll be adding this to the old wishlist I think. Very much enjoyed the first game.

Also can I just say that I think this idea for expansions is much better than DLC. More story based games should do it. In the old days of discs and limited space, making a disc based expansion that required parts of the original game made more sense, as you could sell a single disc add on that incrementally added to the base game. Whereas nowadays I think a standalone expansion price like a DLC can include the parts of the base game it needs, but potentially increase sales to other who maybe weren't interested in the original game. It also won't split up achievements and lock game completion behind a DLC paywall.

It wasn't always like this, but for some reason I kinda want to play the game now. I think I'm just a huge sucker for winter landscapes. (waterscapes?)
