I recently returned to this site after having been away for about a year and a half. What I remember from back then when I joined, it was written in the rules or guidelines that you should write thanks after entering a giveaway (this is still true, the current guidelines encourage users to write thanks). Also I remember there were users on the forum who looked at your comment/entry ratio and judged you accordingly.

Now after returning the site has changed and so seems to be the attitude towards those thank you messages. I see people blacklisting users who write them. I might have ended up on a few blacklists myself by unknowingly following the old habits.

I just find this change curious and wonder what the majority thinks these days.

Personally back then I did feel pressured to write that generic "Thank you", since I lack imagination and most of the time couldn't think of anything better. Now I no longer write it as people seem to hate it. I just write a different thank you message when I happen to come up with one.

Well, thank you for welcoming me back then!

There may not be a giveaway here now, but I was planning to make a different kind of topic once the Steam sale starts.

I don't mind receiving em - I give them from time to time too. However, I can understand why some would find them annoying though. I'd say it's usually safe if the user doesn't state anything in the description.

personally i dont dislike them i think most users dislike them now because of scripts that allow u to type a pre set coment on ga u enter... i will consider blacklist a user (wish will probably not happen) if i ask for gifs or something else on description of said ga and i get a ty or any other generic thanks, still hard for me to blacklist any 1

They don't make me angry, but it is annoying, honestly. Especially when I have over a dozen GAs active (or even more). My message wall is mostly just useless generic thanks messages.

I used to really dislike them because it was a huge mass of messages, but I don't really mind them as much, and there doesn't seem to be as much.

sending a thank you messages AFTER you win is more than welcomed.
repeating the same reply in every GA you enter isn't, it loses meaning and makes you look like a bot.

in the end you will get blacklisted for both replying or not replying to a GA, so it doesn't matter much.

I always write "thank you" after winning. Not always after just entering giveaway, that depends. I don't feel comfortable with writing generic "thank you", but it happens. As for people entering my giveaways, I don't mind either way - I wouldn't blacklist someone for it, it's actually nice :). But it's definitely not a requirement for me. On the other hand, most of the time I read descriptions and when someone says that they don't want "spamming thanks"... I respect that too. Though there were probably giveaways where I did not read everything and maybe I'm one someone's blacklist because of that :D. Well. Newbie's mistakes.

I believe that it is common courtesy to thanks a person for providing the Steamgifts community with a contribution, however small it is.
I won't feel sad or angry or blacklist a person for not thanking, or for thanking. People are free to do as they please.

I prefer when people ask for a youtube video, or your favorite song or joke or something. Since I see a lot of people complaining about generic thanks, I usually try to respond to those and not the others.

Where's the "potato. I don't care" option? Because I don't care and potato.

I like if i get comments, and it is true they lack imagination sometimes, but that is quite alright as i lack it as well at times :).
It is the thought behind it that counts. No more or less.

I prefer not to get a bunch of "thank you" notifications for entry. I appreciate when the winner says thanks.

i never saw anybody talking about AFTER winning, the problem is BEFORE

the site should have an encouraging way to thank the giveaway creator when winning, such as a textbox that pops up when you go to your won page

it's a bit illogical for the winner to click the game title (how would you know to click it?) & see 'ended X hours/days ago' to write a comment there (they may have already written thanks before entering, now they write it again in the same comment area?)

it's also much more personal to do the gifting within steam in a live chat

There's thank you and thank you...
I believe if you're really thankful for the chance to win a game there's no problem in saying so :D
If you're just saying something for the sake of saying something, then it might be spammy, you should avoid it
However, IMO neither are rreason for being blacklisted '-'

Perhaps a compromise would be like many forums have, a "thank you" button that totals the thanks and lists usernames of thankers, without filling up comments (and reply notifications inbox) with simple "thank you" or "me too" type of messages.

It's not mandatory, but it's common courtesy to show appreciation.

However, for some people:
Thanks in giveaway comments = bot
Do not thank in the giveaway comments = bot

So, generally you should type a long message or phrase.

I always make sure to not forget to thanks the creator if I won their giveaway.

uh... so do real people write this all "spammy" thank you?
i just assumed that it was in 90% generated by bots/scripts...

There is a SG tool where you can find who joined your giveaway but didn't comment, possibly resulting a blacklist for the non-commenting contestant. That's what I think personally. Also could be just peer pressure from seeing all the other thank you comments.

To each his own, but I refuse to blacklist someone for saying Thank You, whether it's a bot or not. However, not saying thank you after a win is downright rude in my opinion. I'm much more likely to blacklist someone (or at least check their profile) who doesn't say thanks for a win.

If the notifications from the thanks are that bad, the site has a built-in function to separate forum notifications from giveaway notifications. Takes a few seconds to skim through them. No biggie to me.

Hmm, first of all I'd say don't worry about blacklists. :) People can add you to their blacklist for any reason, or for no reason at all. :) Trying to tiptoe around, avoiding what might possibly offend a random internet stranger will just lead to your not saying anything - which will also offend someone. :)

I think if someone bought a game, and you are trying to win it, it wouldn't hurt to say something. If you actually want to play that game, it shouldn't be too difficult to think of some words. :)

And if you enter a giveaway, but can't think of a single thing to say, maybe you don't want that game as much as you think you do... :)

Some people write the same generic comment in every giveaway they enter. Are they a bot entering giveaways via script, or simply a lazy human - and what's the difference? :) I can't have a conversation with a bot or someone's Control-V key. :)

Anyway, I would suggest if you want a game to play it, write something original. :) But if you're just greedy for a free game, and don't care what the game is, just enter quietly and skip the generic thanks. :)
