This sucks. i believe some games that i BOUGHT at humble bundle for example....not work anymore? This is ridiculous. This should be just for future purchases not retroactive. So i will wait to buy some games now...

Humble games are not affected - only games that are affected by this change are Steam Gifts - aka games bought from steam store in cheaper regions and traded/resold.

this is good but i trade gifts with other guys like north american and greek , i'm brazilian and our economics isn't good by now (so i "bought" a game in a "expensive" country. Was different now i'm confused

VR! Steam machines! Steam controllers!

so the latest update shows a picture of a game which no longer can be played.
Does this mean this is retroactively implemented?

That would be outrageous! Also, of all games, Toki Tori??

All games are affected by this, Toki Tori ain't just some random pick.

All right then. For a moment I thought it was being implemented retroactively but selectively and Toki Tori seemed like a weird choice for that. Nothing against the game or the gamer who took the screenshot!

Guess it because it's cheap, so the poster didn't have to spend much to test this.

Makes sense, yeah. Actually I'd say it's one of those overbundled, overdiscounted games where it's hard to find someone who doesn't own it! :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not retroactive, it's only if you FROM NOW ON activate region locked games in a different region (presumably by using VPN), you won't be able to run in. Doesn't affect your old games.

This is really expected with increase of G2A/Kinguin/other unauthorized sellers selling VPN gifts.

Keys are to be followed, Steam recently implemented similar region tagging for keys, which currently on gives reports for publishers on how many keys resold and activated "out of region".

to Australians,British,or generally people who live in regions where games are expensive as f,go find yourself a Canadian or Japanese trader, games are around 10-25% cheaper in their stores (compared to US store, that would be around 20-50% compared to GB and Australian stores
) yeah it's nowhere close to Ru store but it's something :|

They will ask a commission for it... let's say a 10%. So it won't be that cheap. :-/

RIP Extra items granted by purchases of XXXXX 4-Pack will be added to your Steam inventory and can be sent as gifts or traded with friends. Any copy sent as a gift or traded can only be activated by the recipient if their Steam account is in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore or Thailand.

Let's put it that way: when I'm paying good money, I clearly don't want to have to bother with VPNs and whatnot.

Problem is: People WERE using VPN's because it was forbidden by EULA (not illegal). Steam added warning on redemption AND limited playing to those countries.

Cmon guys not this again.... Sorry for all of you traders out there but all you can do right now is to deal with it.
If I like? hell no! Can I do anything about it? Just to face the truth and deal with it.

No matter how much we cry our lord Gaben won't hear us.
And if was something important, like food or water, I would be really pissed of, but it's all games. Most of us don't make money by playing games, so your job is not in risk. And the profits the Russian traders did with all this trading?... Get a real job! Also I don't think you could actually make a real living with these trading business, it helps but is not much(a help is a help but you have to make more than that).

I used to buy games also from Russian traders, but now I can't. But I'm not sad, it's not like I will starve because of it.

About people traveling and etc.... Contact Steam support and hope for the best(yes it's a joke their service, but what else?) but it's their better way to fight VPN and similar tricks.

The Vietnamese guy I traded with usually did this for a living. Worked 20 hours a day, selling hundreds of games every day.
He made an awful lot of money

Can I still activate it with vpn without worries?

if they come from different region, then probably not. A lot of ppl already reported gift copies showing this new restriction only when you activate them, and showing no restriction / just old one in inventory.

well, steamgift will be useless now,we can expect on bundled game or eu/usa tier gift only

And for those think if you moving to another country you can send ticket to steam, its not that easy, that will be a looooong looooong journey till your account get moved :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

sending ticket will change your region, but won't change region of games in your library. All Steam support will do is to eventually delete locked copies and then you have to buy them again in your new area. they will not change RU version to ROW version just because you moved ;)

yeah, but i saw some men on first page arguing you can just send ticket blablabla and he look really happy with this new gabe restriction, dang

Well, the real question if we are talking about fairness : Is the price fair?

Russians seems to have the best prices, how about countries such as Indonesia? We are paying a lot more than the Russians, though our average salary is way lower than Russians.

NOT SURE IF THIS HAS BEEN MENTIONED BEFORE BUT apparently they also closed the gap with unpacked x-packs! unpacked copies of region locked games used to be ROW, they are now REGION LOCKED too! Anyone able to confirm this?

It's true

Yes, I have a pending win for this reason, the guy is struggling to find a row copy of the gift cos the ones he got from x-packs were region locked when I tried to activate them and showed the new error message with the IP restrictions.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

one more question, I have 3 unpacked copies from a RU 4 pack that was purchased last week, the copies dont indicate anything, they dont have restriction notes in red letters etc. so when you unpack a 4 pack now, do the unpacked copies now have any restriction notes? are my 3 copies still ROW or are they secretly region locked?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know for sure but the guy did send me 2 gifts, the first time it was restricted to Asian countries and I got the warning message only after trying to accept the gift, the second time it was restricted to south america and again it popped up the message when I tried to accept the gift. The gifter said he couldn't see the restriction himself, maybe because he already had the game in his library and did not have the option to redeem it on his account.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

okay, I just got note from another source who says that unpacked games from x-packs do have a note about their restriction since today. copies from unpacked games from before today are still ROW.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

you can try for yourself. try to add one of your gifts to your account (doesn't matter that you don't want to do that, and that you maybe already have the game). if there is a restriction, you will see it in the first dialog.

Permalink

i know. i just did, it works. so yeah I can confirm that games from x-packs bought before 12th March are still ROW.

This block is supposed to affect only to VNP activated games (bought in restricted countries after the 19th of December).

Permalink

If u already have activated games on account they will be playable just like before with no restriction, this rules only applies to gifts.
For example if u have right now Gift with restrictions and try to add this game in library it will be "run only in specific region"

well they should at least make up an option to upgrade your version for the regional price difference instead of paying the full amount again.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

that is actually a good idea. not as good as just being able to play the games you paid for, but better than what valve does now. this would have to be possible for single games, of course. so you could upgrade to ROW one by one.

it affects all giftable copies - no matter if they are for full game or just for DLC

yes, but after activating with VPN the dlc, you dont need it to download separately or play, the question will it install or not when the game is installed.
