I brought up the Magika Collection as a look-see, and lo and behold, this line stands out, in bold font even... "This game requires the Steam Client to Install & Play Features"
So yes, some of these (good chance most) that are on steam, use steam.

Considering Direct2Drive doesn't exists anymore since may 2011, I know you are wrong. Plus some games requires Steamworks to play (like Magicka) so yes those games will be available on Steam. Most games will however not be since they want to promote their own store and not their competitor's.

Steamworks games always need Steam. For example Deus Ex will always activate on Steam, even from Gamestop.

Impulse Driven (the now Gamestop owned Digital Download Service) also has some great deals on games. Snagged Lord of the Rings War in the North for $10 and it's Steamworks. Gotham City Impostors is also on sale for $7.50 and is Steamworks.
