So I don't really mind these really short giveaways, but seriously, sometimes a guy's gotta sleep y'know? I was lucky when I just so happened to be awake and online when this was on but really, I'd be really annoyed if I wasn't and I found out about this later.

Anyone care to share their thoughts on this? Does anyone who do this care to explain why?

My thoughts? It's entirely up to the gifter so it isn't fair to be annoyed at them if you sleep through it. Putting up hour long giveaways is a way to improve the odds of those that enter.

Pretty much this^. If anything, there should be more hour-long giveaways just to see who the real trolls of steamgifts are ^_^.

Yeah it would give us all a funny feeling to check SG every 5 mins.. Pretty much like a pop quiz, just pops up and then its gone, people lucky enough to see them usually get rewarded :P

Agreed. I like 1 Hr giveaways, and the most I'd likely do on my future giveaways would be a few hours. I dunno, I think it's just funner that way, at least for me as a giver.

Sure, it sucks to miss out on a giveaway you'd like because of work, school, sleep, etc. But it would suck worse to sit at the computer 24/7 checking the site.

But that's what makes it interesting :P Cause people will randomly log on just to see if by chance there is one.

I don't really bother ^^ If I see one that only lasts an hour I might be lucky to enter it with few others and perhaps win it because of it. But it's entirely up to the gifter. If they like to have a 1 hour giveaway that's fine aswell :D I'm happy with all giveaways ^^ even if I don't participate in it.

Well, but let's also remember that it is in fact fair. Still random, still fair.

Seems my jab at the whiners didn't come across as such.

I'd just like to state now that I don't have a problem with short blink-and-you'll-miss giveaways. They're exactly the sort of thing I like about this site. I was just wondering what other people thought about it and asking the gifters why they choose to do it.

As for being annoyed. Well I think it's well in my rights to feel somewhat down when I miss out on a chance to get something I was interested in. I'm sure as hell not gonna bitch about it though.

But its not random. If all users of steam gifts were equally distributed amongst each timezone in the world, and all got up and went to bed at the same time, then I suppose you could call the giveaway times random.

For example, if 90% of steam gifts users live in North America, then gifters are more likely to create one hour giveaways during normal waking hours for this side of the world. Someone who lives in an opposite timezone, like in Asia would have a far less chance of getting in on these giveaways.

Personally I like the one hour giveaways, but I wouldn't say they are fair to everyone.

but there are also the hour long giveaways in the middle of the night from people too lazy to sleep, so people in Asia do get a chance

So putting up contests at random times of day with winners randomly selected isn't random? Ok... first, it's still random, if you're arguing for fairness than what's to stop people in whatever region who work the graveyard shift from saying "hey it's not fair!"

It's fair any way you slice it, you snooze you lose... but in this case you really aren't losing, you're just not entering a contest.

No, it is not random. I do not think you understand the definition of random. For something to be random, there needs to be a completely equal chance of any possible outcome. As I explained above, due to users living in different timezones, there is a bias, and giveaways are more likely to be created during certian times of day - thus not random. Also, even if it was purely random, that does not mean it is fair. Just because something is random does not automatically make it fair - the two are very different concepts.

"For something to be random, there needs to be a completely equal chance of any possible outcome."

Wrong. Random means that the outcome of an event is not known with certainty. Probability distributions for random events do not need to be equal, and only very rarely are. Learn about Gaussian distributions sometime.

As for your spiels on fairness. Seriously dude, grow up. That's all I can say. The giveaways are designed without the concept of individual merit in mind. Deal with it.

It's actually entertaining sometimes. Where I live there is a sort of 'farmers market' and they were giving out free beans, and this lady was complaining to the cashier that the beans were turning slightly brown/yellow because of the heat and that they were disgusting.. I don't understand how some people can complain over free things.. They cashier doesn't give a damn about what your gonna do with them.. they are free.. take them and go put them in a compost for all you want.. Lol the lady made a huge scene and looked overly dumb afterwards and during.
