I'm not sure if this has been covered before (If so, delete this thread) but if you purchase an EA game from Steam, for example Battlefield Bad Company 2, you can right-click the game in your library once it has been installed and select "View CD Key" and if you redeem the same CD-Key on Origin you get an additional copy of the game. It may seem pointless at first but if you give the key to a buddy you can then play with them.

Sorry for the hijack, but you can't give it to your pal, cuz the key is linked to your EA account...

How is a key from steam somehow linked to your EA account?

Most EA games that use multiplayer need you to sign into EA servers, obviously. You can't buy Darkspore on Steam and give the key to your Origin buddy, because then when you try to sign in it'll ask for your EA account and then they'll see you don't have Darkspore registered. I believe (though haven't confirmed) that this is true for all multiplayer games, like Battlefield and Command and Conquer. It's also true for games like Spore, so it might be true for many single-player games as well. I imagine Dragon Age would even require it, since you need to use the Bioware servers to get access to in-game content you've gotten from beforehand, like if you bought Dead Space 2 and got the Ser Isaac Clarke armor.

If it needs in-game activation, sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. Hence your statement is not completely true

The proper thing to do is use the key as a giveaway for Origin. Though, then again, this isn't Origingifts.com

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Since the CD-Key will be the same as the one you're using on Steam, you might end up having a conflict between your game and the one you gave away. I register the games I can on Origin only for backup purpose. If ever Steam doesn't work for me at some point I'll still have a few games on my Origin account.

But then there would probably be cd-key conflicts as most game dont allow 2 people with the same cd-key to play online or sometimes in the same match / lobby not sure about EA's Origins rules.

Most of them anyway. I know of Darkspore and Shank who don't show up on that list but whose CD-key can be redeemed on Origin.

My copies of Mirror's Edge, Dead Space and Mass Effect don't activate on Origin - although my Dead Space 2 and Mass Effect 2 both did.

It's possible to activate Dead Space and Mass Effect on Origin. Dead Space key can be found in registry and Mass Effect can be added through EA on-line activation. Search Steam Forums for details.

Has anyone compiled a list of cross-compatible games between Steam and Origin?

Most EA games didn't have steam achievements. And downloading is twice faster from Origin servers in my case.

Can be hit or miss with Origin support. Depends on who you get on the other end.

If one support person doesn't want to activate it, try later and hope to get someone else. It's usually a good idea not to mention that the key is from Steam.
