I have a third-party Switch controller and it works perfectly fine on Windows - just plug it in and it's ready to go.
On the other hand I'd highly recommend picking up a PowerA Xbox One Enhanced controller. Way cheaper than first-party controllers and the build quality and comfort are both excellent, and it works right out of the box.

Yes, any will do thanks to valve implementation, but some features are missing and i have experienced some wonkiness/weird behaviour when a controller is first identified, turned on or things like that.
But its been awhile since i had a switch-pro(only) controller hook up to my steam, the weird stuff may have been fixed
Even if theres still any bug or a bit longer for steam to identify its nothing to worry about. Work flawlessly.
But it was enought differences for me to stick with xbox mode on my controller, its a 8bit do pro - basically a switchpro controller with windows and bluetooth modes.
My main gripe with switch-pro mode was it took longer between turning controller on and playing, and the button for screenshots wasnt working on steam (maybe its fixed)
ps: if youre looking for one to buy i highly recommend this one
8bitdoPro
-i have the pro 1 +, will buy the pro2 as soon as i can (extra back buttons)

I use a switch pro controller as my main PC controller and it works just fine. I don't have other consoles apart from a switch so it's nice to be able to use the same controller across PC and console.

i assume you have a switch? then its the right choice. otherwise xbox have better PC compatibility for modern games
Unity games have some trouble with anything else, and Steam Input work with everything else
i use PS4 controller (DS4), because most of my friends have PS and i got used to holding it for years (since PS1 it pretty much the same grip). so now i have my own
but before that i had a logitech one i liked more for its size, but had awful analog sticks

It worked for me when I played Overcooked 2 with me sister, but you might have to do some workaround. We couldnt just plug and play, we had to activate the controllers on Steam settings.

Seconded on the Xbox controller working fine (and using wired, if convenient).

I think switch controller should work, and you should even have access to the Gyroscope if you use it with Steam Input. Same applies to DS4 and Dualsense if you want to use those. A typical Xbox controller is nice if you want something simple and reliable for any game.
Another thing to consider is button prompts if that matters to you (for me personally it's not that big of a deal). Most games assume your using an Xbox style controller so prompts are made with that in mind, although more recent games have been adding button prompt support for Switch and Playstation controllers. Sometimes there are mods for this type of thing too in the case the game does not do this.

I only have a nintendo pro controler and it works fine with steam. For some games I had to change the buttons. But it all works and connecting it is super easy with blue tooth. So go for it!

For me THE BEST is XOne (3 revision) controller for PC [steam GOG EA and ubi] games (over official adapter my PC don`t have Bluetooth).
Extra note download "Ximput battery meter" (you recive pop-up when battery is low and info on task bar)

Sry., no answer regarding your initial question.
I can only share my thoughts on controllers for PC in common and in my experience on the average you´re better off with anything XBox or compatible, especially with older games!
While you can & have to configure any device with Steam itself (Steam/Settings/Controller, top left in the client) a lot of games were made only with Microsoft/XBox compatibilty in mind. Sometimes it doesn´t matter, some won´t work at all with anything Sony/PS/Nintendo.. at least you´ll practically always have the distraction of button configuration shown in XBox style only (A/B, X/Y).
It has gotten better over the years though, so if you are more concentrated on games released within the last ~5 yrs, there should be much less problems. Nowadays alot of games actually support choosing the type and adjust their display accordingly.
Then there´s the topic of PS/Nintendo(?) games ported to PC. In those cases, I believe, you might prefer products compatible to the original. AFAIK there is no universal solution, maybe VALVEs own? But imo it really mostly depends on which games you intend to play ..

Long story short, I need to know if a Nintendo Switch pro controller would work fine for PC games (Steam mostly). Can you just plug it and play, or would it require exrta software?
Feel free to post other recommendation if you think other controller works better, or just bump the thread.
