Now, as you can tell from the title, I am not fond of 'horror' anything. Be they movie/games/etc. I tend to shy away because ... well ... I'm a chicken XD. But I want to change that! So I have come to you fellow peeps for guidance.

Which horror games would you suggest to someone who never played one before?

Oh and random giveaway because ....

And you should play Doom 3. Isn't that scary, but is creepy

Poor ratio, sorry. Hmm, I might give it a go but is it better to play them in order or can I jump to the third?

The early doom games don't have much of a story anyway, and with the shift in tone Doom 3 might well be considered a game from an entirely separate series. So yea, no problem playing Doom 3 first.

I have the PS3 remastered version, will that do? I've heard that it was done poorly but idk.

im afraid no, they changed the graphics without care the integrity, and chaged the voice actors with ones that ruin the tone.

Silent Hill 2: Directors Cut was launched on the PC and Xbox aswell, so it is not that hard to find. ;) oh look jack sparrow :v

I don't play much horror, but I'd prefer atmospheric & psychological horror to jumpscare horror.
I've heard Kholat is really good horror adventure. Or if you want some FPS experience, maybe you can try Metro franchise?

I've heard of Kholat and I'm keeping my eye on it. Metro is a good suggestion but would you recommend the original or the redux versions? (I have both versions of both games).

I'd recommend Redux versions. I haven't played both of them (crap computer) but according to what I've heard
Metro 2033 Redux: Improve performance (the original one was terribly optimized) and graphic, with some gameplay elements borrowed from Last Light although some say these changes make the game somewhat easier.
Metro Last Light: Slightly improved, since the original version is more optimized than 2033. Some bugs are still there and haven't been fixed.
Btw have you tried Stalker franchise? :D

If you enjoy Metro, then I'd strongly recommend you give them a try, especially Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat :)

DreadOut. It teaches you practical things, like how to survive a poltergeist infestation or zombie apocalypse with just a cell phone. All those other games ... like an RPG or sniper rifle is just going to be lying around in real life. Pffft.

You I was actually going to buy that game but then I saw the Tom Clancy games on the flash sale and that was enough reason for me to go back to being a chicken :P.

Bad rats the revenge?? xD

Fatal frame?
Sorry but not a steam game
And some of jrpg horror game (I think it's from rpg maker)
Like Ib, The croocked man, Witch's house(I don't like the ending), Mad father
For non rpg maker, it's corpse party I guess?

If it's a normal one and on steam
Spooky house of jumpscares, I recommend it very xD

I'd recommend Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space. Both games have a good balance between survival horror and action. There are plenty of tense moments that I still dread going through even though I know what to expect. But monsters are a lot less scary when you are carrying the arsenal of a small army.

No one mentioned Alan Wake? It has a great story and it's really creepy.

While not a pure horror game, check it System Shock 2 for a light introduction (it has some horror vibes, and is on top of that one of the best games of all time).

Horror games for the uninitiated, eh?

  • Alan Wake - Spooky darkness with kinda creepy enemies, but rather light on actual horror, really. More like a supernatural action thriller.
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins - First-person survival horror that forces you to count bullets and weigh the merits of various improvised melee weapons. Dark, sometimes disturbing, and often startling, but not really super-scary.
  • Dead Space - Definitely in the survival horror vein, but most of the horror is just gore and jump scares. The later games in the series skew more towards action, dropping a lot of both the survival and horror aspects.
  • F.E.A.R. - The horror and action aspects are severely compartmentalized, and the horror sections are more just spooky than scary.
  • Home - Psychological horror with a branching narrative base. Kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure story with creepy exploration stuff.
  • Left 4 Dead 2 - Zombies! Zombies everywhere! Shoot 'em dead!
  • Metro 2033 - Stealth FPS with occasional monster attacks. More intense than scary.
  • Serena - More psychological horror, even more of a walking simulator than Home. Good story and environment, tho', and it's free!
  • System Shock 2 - Is there another? We are we are we are . . . they see you! Run! RUN!

Once you're acclimated, we'll start talking stuff like Amnesia, Fatal Frame, Outlast, and Paranormal.

Start with free SCP games. This for example. Maybe firstly you find it boring, you just walk and walk, but it constantly keeps you in suspense and when you meet monsters, you'll shit your pants.

I love horror games. The fun fact about them is that they scare you. Also it is hard to make a good horror atmosphere that draws you into the game to the point that you are actually scared.

THEY MAKE YOU FEEL ALIVE

As a lot of people said, Outlast.
I tried it, and will probably never go back again.
I am not brave enough.
But you lied, you are not a chicken, you are a lobster with god power.
So it will be a simple walk for you :)

Start with Bioshock imo, can be a bit spooky and things but nothing big.
Also it would help you out a lot, if you don't think you WILL be scared when you play the game, just set your mind to think that anything that happens won't freak you out. That's what I did and I stopped being scared of horror movies, games etc.
