Hmm... I haven't played many games that could really be considered "horror."
It's an old game, but what about Clive Barker's Undying? it seems to be highly regarded, despite having come out over 14 years ago.

Does the way GOG has it set up clear up the compatibility issues, what with it being an old game, without having to do a bunch of other stuff, yourself?
I can't believe the Steam summer sale just ended and I'm actually almost considering reinstalling a game from 2001...

I think that you should try Knock-knock. It has a great atmosphere and it has not screamers in it.

You are the first and it is one of the games I've been thinking of playing.

Start with Resident Evil 4. It's the perfect balance of horror and shooter and it's, for all intends and purposes, standalone. After that, you can go for the originals, 1-3. After those, I can recommend Clive Barker's Undying, The White Chamber, F.E.A.R. , Doom 3, Penumbra games. For the master class of horrors you can try Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Aliens vs Predator 2 (Marine campaign), Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi, (if you have PSX/PS2) Fatal Frame games, Alien Isolation, etc.
Out of all these, AvP2 campaign still makes me cringe...

Well if you want to ease yourself into horror, try some games where you can defend yourself against scary stuff like FEAR and DOOM 3.
You could try play games like Outlast and Alien Isolation but still sorta ease yourself into it by playing it when the sun is still out and maybe have family and/or friends right there with you talking about how scary the game is. Or maybe even let them play and you can watch and talk about it.
I'm sort of a chicken as well as I don't play much horror games. I managed to complete Outlast playing in the dark passed midnight (bruise my knee after jumping out of my chair and slamming it against the underside of the table). But never managed to complete the Whistleblower DLC as I find it much scarier.

You can try Outlast. Its not exactly horror but... You will know when you play it
Also, give Slender Man a try. Its a short game and very small size, but the atmospheric effects are good. Have a good pair of headphones...

I'm with everyone on Bioshock. There is also Cry of Fear which is a more jump-scare free to play and works well with four players...it looks horrifyingly funny.

I'm not a big fan of horror movies/games either, or at least those that rely too much on jumpscares and gore. Games/Movies/Books that create a good atmosphere that gets also creepy at times, those I love.
I recommend the Bioshock games like other here have already done, and also Alan Wake. Awesome little game, one of my favorites; cool story, great atmosphere and AWESOME soundtrack. Beautiful sceneries too.

I used to watch my dad and brother play Half-Life 1. And since then I was afraid of that game, I really don't know why.. but recently I managed to get over it and complete it. Playing on higher difficulity, definitely managed to make it scarier.
Bioshock 1 on highest difficulity, with properly set up brightness, maybe SweetFX for better graphics is creepy and scary as fuck man.
I haven't played DOOM 3, any ideas anyone if it's scary?
Oh yeah.. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and Metro are great. They're scary even on lower difficulities..
And final, but not least.. Bad Rats.

This is a great thread. :)
I don't often watch thriller/horror movies, because the ones I've seen didn't have much of an effect on me, but I have a feeling that I'll find games much scarier, and I'm reading some of the recommendations here to get an idea of where to start, myself. ;)

Now, as you can tell from the title, I am not fond of 'horror' anything. Be they movie/games/etc. I tend to shy away because ... well ... I'm a chicken XD. But I want to change that! So I have come to you fellow peeps for guidance.
Which horror games would you suggest to someone who never played one before?
Oh and random giveaway because ....
