Most games seem to focus on just a few time periods, and they are mostly Eurocentric.. High middle ages & WW2 are the big ones, with a splattering of Napoleonic(ish), Sengoku, Colonial & post fall of the republic Roman eras.
I would love to see more games based on, or inspired by, the far east for an example. China, despite having a long and really interesting history, never seem to get any attention

As you only mentioned strategy games as examples, I assume that you aren't interested in other genre titles covering that era? Mount & Blade II will cover the years 600-1200 AD, for example.
It's no surprise that there are only few games covering that era imho. There were only few stable protagonists and it's about the opposite of what games usually represent: Decline.

Interested in this as well. The only things I can think of are the Viking Conquest DLC for Mount and Blade Warband (roughly 9th century according to the historical characters mentioned on the game's page) and a couple scenarios for Civ V.
(I don't think the term "Dark Ages" is still used by historians today though. Whenever I read about that period it's usually referred to as "Early Middle Ages", "First Middle Ages" or "High Middle Ages" - the last two being literal translations from French to English and not actual English denominations.)

Yeah, usually historians go with "early middle ages" or refer to specific time periods within the early middle ages, like "migration period". High middle ages is usually 10th century-13th century (and depending on exactly where you are, possibly also 14th century). The term "dark ages" do give the impression that the time period was just misery and decline, which is not really true, and which is why historians want to move away from it.

The Black Death, but the reviews seem to be quite poor.

The first Stronghold game begins in 1066, but indeed there aren't many games in that time period and even Assassins Creed (I was sure that it was in the Dark Ages) is set in 1196. I would be interested to see some games in this time period.

Assassin's Creed is set during the crusades (third one, I think), which is post dark ages. 1066, and the Battle of Hastings is often used as an end date for the early middle ages, and the start of the high middle ages (though reality is of course more complex than that).

Tried to do some digging and found f2p card game inspired by Anglo-Saxon England: Ortus Regni *shrugs*

First thing coming to mind was Dark Messiah of Might & Magic though I don't know which specific time it covers (if any)

Legends of Eisenwald http://store.steampowered.com/app/246760/ fits this description I think.

Perhaps there's some you haven't considered tagged as "Medieval?"

You've mentioned these, but wanted to post:
Crusader Kings 2 - normally starts at 1066, but has DLC that can back up start date to 769 (Charlemagne) or a bit later 867 with The Old Gods.

Right. This banana needs to get his eyes checked it seems :/

We have an entry from Total War with a DLC that focuses on it (Total War: Attila), and Crusader kings 2 also has a DLC that deals with this era.
Well, those are the ones I know of (and the before mentioned Mount & Blade). There seem to be very little games actually about this period...
EDIT: Just thought about this: there is a game called Viking: Battle for Asgard (or something like that). I've not played it yet, but I guess it's about vikings, which is in the dark ages...

Play more CKII
Check out Knights of Honor Not dark ages but imo the best medieval strategy game ever released. Fck Paradox for not releasing a sequel to this and focusing on CKII. Hmmm after checking my library you are right, I own most medieval games that are on Steam yet none cover the dark ages, except Atilla. Maybe the sale numbers of Atilla are the reason why...
Oriental Empires 1500 BC - 1500 AD Set in China

Title: Knights of Honor
Genre: Strategy
Developer: Black Sea Studios Ltd
Publisher: Paradox Interactive
Release Date: 10 May, 2005
EDIT: Looking at their site, I want to guess that the reference below is a hint to what they are up to. Since that is a KoH reference, it's fair to assume that's the sequel they are working (or going to be working) on.

Wikipedia also lists "Sunflowers Interactive Entertainment Software" as one of the games publishers.
I wonder where the rights to the game ended up after all of this. But even if they don't make a Knights of Honor 2, they could always make a spiritual successor.

Haha, so like-minded. I already bugged Fredrik Wester about a year ago about purchasing the KoH rights. He liked the idea, but neither of us was certain if Crytek or Sunflowers would own those rights. And your thread made me remind him about that topic. No reply yet though. ;)

I played that game, pissed me off at the end because my game bugged somehow (whenever I load it it crashes after few seconds), so I uninstalled it , but it's fun
Best moment of that game : "Your king is DEAD.'

I clarified what I meant by dark ages in my original post, as the term "dark ages" can have multiple meanings.
With the "Dark ages" I meant what we usually refer to as the "dark ages" these days, in other words roughly from the fall of the western Roman empire up until the 10th (or possibly early 11th) century, and not the time of the crusades or such, or the original meaning of the term (which was coined during the 17th century and was meant to refer to the 10th & 11th century).
Also, 1000 shitty years? That's not quite fair. A lot of progress was made during this era. While the migration period was one of turbulence, towards the 8th century we get the "Golden Age of Islam", where scientific ideas were advanced beyond that of classical times. This later spread into Europe. Europe was not really at a standstill, but it was rather turbulent.
Thanks for the list of games though.

There are multiple meanings and the most common is the one Fnord used and that any somewhat well educated person will get. Furthermore he specified it in his OP which definition he was looking for. But you ignore all that and drop a list that wasn't asked for and react hostile to a very polite explanation, that included an expression of thanks.
Take note of the word "particularly" in the screenshot below.

Any well educated person would also have gotten that when he talked about the Golden Age of Islam he probably thought about the Umayyads or Al-Andalus, not the Ottomans, and that "his" version of the "Dark Ages" is based on what's currently historical authority.
But education doesn't make up for humour, and as far as I'm concerned, your posts make me laugh more than his.

Found this while browsing the "Medieval" tag on Steam (which should probably be purged of all the fantasy stuff, but I lost hope about proper tags on Steam long ago)

Can't say if it's good, or even historically accurate, but it seems to fit the criteria.

Yeah, that one fits the bill! I'm just waiting for it to leave early access. And it looks like they're aiming for something that is at least believable, based on their own description.
Expeditions: Viking also looks promising, but that's also not out yet.
Vikings must be a very tricky subjects to make games about. There are so many misconceptions of them that have become "facts" in people's minds that making a too accurate game about them might result in a backlash based on it.

I'm not bound to steam, and have purchased a few games directly from Matrix games in the past. The core game looks like it's mostly ancient battles, but the expansions Decline & Fall and Wolves of the Sea fits what I'm looking for.

The Dark ages is really unrepresented in games. This period had a lot of things going on, and being quite tumultuous, there should be a lot of room for interesting games. Yet I can't really think of many games that deals with this era. We have an entry from Total War with a DLC that focuses on it (Total War: Attila), and Crusader kings 2 also has a DLC that deals with this era. For a slightly more obscure game, we have Great Invasions (The Dark Ages 350-1066 AD), but that game was not very good.
So does anyone know of any games set during the dark ages, or are at least heavily inspired by this time period, and that are worth playing? (for anyone saying Darklands, that's 15 century, also just because a game is dark does not mean it's set during the Dark ages).
