don't like the term Dark Ages - or even middle ages for that matter - as there was nothing truly darker (and the middle of what exactly) about that period than any other period - at uni we were taught about the Mediaevil (sorry don't have the macro to conflate the ae) period and that was broken down into early mid and late - before this was anglo saxon (guess periods change from country to country - given that we never had a copper age, but much of the baltic states did) - could probably drop most games into those periods and have fun though :)

Yes, the term is rather misleading, and does give a negative impression of what really was a diverse era. There were of course darker times during the "dark ages", but there were also brighter times. I just used a term that I think most would be familiar with.
The middle ages are between the classical times & modern times. So it's in the middle of something :P
And speaking of what period counts as what, the "middle ages" in Sweden is, according to some historians, between the fall of the Vikings/Sweden turning Christian (which is on its own a very vague definition, as there were people following the Norse faith in Sweden well into the 14th century, or at least they followed it "when it was convenient", when the Norse gods promised better conditions than the Christian god) and Gustav Vasa taking the throne in 1523.

:) - love the classic stories from the viking periods - I read sigurd the dragon slayer before the hobbit and was amazed at how much Tolkien used - after that period it sure as hell becomes a melting pot - periods are a pain in the butt, when we were being taught about early man the first thing the lecturer said is that it will be wrong by the time we leave uni - and sure enough it was :P

King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame and its successor are set in post-roman Britannia (somewhere in the late 5th century supposedly), but there is definitely some fantasy involved, so I don't know if it counts. There are some other King Arthur flavored games as well.
Also, pretty much every game about Vikings is set in this period (i.e. Medieval: Total War Viking Invasion expansion).

This might be relevant. But I guess it depends what you actually want from the game.

I've not played but am aware of Pendragon Rising (82% positive reviews) although with it being King Arthur related it is likely it involve some fantasy .. Be aware It's text based so not sure if your cup of tea?

Does viking stuff fall into the cathegory? Like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Konung, etc? Or Jotun :P
Reigns I believe starts in the 7th century, technically at least.

I had completely forgot about the Konung series, I should give them a try. I even got them on GOG a little while back (as Konung 1 is not available on steam). I've got Hellblade wishlisted, but it's sadly not out yet. And Jotun is a bit too fantasy-ish :P Reigns seems very abstract, but I might pick it up at some point. It's only 3€ after all (but it's not quite what I'm looking for now).

There are many Arthurian games from the DOS age that maybe fit the criteria.
Apart from that maybe:
Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye
Hammer of the Gods

Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye actually looks really good. Looking at the screenshots, it reminds me a bit of King of Dragon Pass (which is a game I really like) mixed in with Vikings: The Strategy of Ultimate Conquest (which was not very good, but had potential)

The first expansion of Rome: Total War called "Barbarian Invasion" starts with the Roman Empire divided by two and between "barbarian" invasions, poverty and religion playing with anything roman in this game is playing in hard difficulty.
However, it's not what you are looking for, it's kinda close, 4-5th century I think. It's probably the beginning of those dark ages of the human been and the beginning of the end in the west.
Byzantine Empire = True empire!

When Paradox inevitably sees the light and releases EU: Rome 2 it shall cover all of Rome's history including the Eastern Empire's until the 15th century and you will be able to play it during the Dark Ages with appropriate mechanics and immersion and it shall be Glorious

Have you considered The Banner Saga ? Though it is a fantasy world, it nonetheless uses its nordic setting to great effect...

With the "Dark ages" I meant what we usually refer to as the "dark ages" these days, in other words roughly from the fall of the western Roman empire up until the 10th (or possibly early 11th) century, and not the time of the crusades or such, or the original meaning of the term (which was coined during the 17th century and was meant to refer to the 10th & 11th century).
The Dark ages is really unrepresented in games. This period had a lot of things going on, and being quite tumultuous, there should be a lot of room for interesting games. Yet I can't really think of many games that deals with this era. We have an entry from Total War with a DLC that focuses on it (Total War: Attila), and Crusader kings 2 also has a DLC that deals with this era. For a slightly more obscure game, we have Great Invasions (The Dark Ages 350-1066 AD), but that game was not very good.
So does anyone know of any games set during the dark ages, or are at least heavily inspired by this time period, and that are worth playing? (for anyone saying Darklands, that's 15 century, also just because a game is dark does not mean it's set during the Dark ages).
